Description
A happy little piece celebrating the month of May! This is one of my favorite madrigals by Thomas Morley - though I love many of his madrigals because of his creative part-writing, especially in the bass.
The [structural] contrast between the first and second parts of the tune is quite striking. The first part is very chordal and homophonic with the melody bouncing along on top of blocky, four-note chords (this is a five-part piece) and even the "Fa-la-las," which are so typical of these English madrigals cannot shake the rigidity. The second part begins with the same homophony as the first, but this is soon tossed to the wind as the "Fa-la-las" return in force. This time the melody laughs along, rising and falling, and all the other voices caper wildly around it and bring the tune to a rousing finish.
DISCLAIMER: I do not love this madrigal because of its lyrics - only Morley's tune.
The two-part harpsichord version is my own arrangement.
Instruments Used:
Susato Wide-Bore Soprano recorder
Mollenhauer "Adri's Dream" Alto recorder
Aulos tenor recorder
Aulos bass recorder
Sampled harpsichord
Enjoy!!

Outstanding playing of this joyful tune - if I had a maypole I'd go out and dance around it!
