Description
Latest version. The last version (http://www.macjams.com/song/66859) cleared yet another off site critique with just a couple of minor changes suggested. It was pretty close to my birthday and my family decided to gift me with a pro Nashville session to get the song done!
Just to be perfectly clear I'm not singing or playing on this. I'm just the songwriter here.
This is the first mix back from the session which I still have to approve. I can still get some tweaks done to it so I'm particularly interested in your opinions of the mix. I'm thinking it might be a tad dry, and that the electric in the right channel might be a little out front.
Overall I'm really happy with this version. I put it in country this time mostly on the basis of the vocal interpretation.

Lyrics
Tryin Hard To Wake From This American Dream
Words & Music Copyright David Brown 2011
Verse 1
=======
A lowering sky in the fading light
Hands in pockets shoulders tight
The pink slip in his faded jeans still burns a hole inside.
The for lease signs are all around.
Been that way since the plants shut down
he's just out there walkin streets as empty as his pride
Chorus
======
And the American Dream is turning dark today
Red White and Blue start to fade to gray
From the office parks to the union halls
People running scared if they can run at all
The jobs are gone, we can't move on
Things aren't what they used to be
And we're trying hard to wake from this American Dream
Verse 2
=====================================
A darkened hall with a flickering light
Moving slowly, arms crossed tight
He waits his turn with all the rest
In the unemployment line
Their faces worn by the desperate times
They all need jobs by week 99
When the checks run out, and their savings go
All their homes'll be on the line.
Chorus
======
And the American Dream is turning dark today
Red White and Blue start to fade to gray
From the office parks to the union halls
People running scared if they can run at all
The jobs are gone, we can't move on
Things aren't what they used to be
And we're trying hard to wake from this American Dream
Bridge
======
And the endless calls from collection men
fall like a toxic rain
And the sheriff's sale will put him on the street
A cardboard box by the overpass a new home for the pain
Cold and tired, nothing left to eat
Chorus
======
And the American Dream is turning dark today
Red White and Blue start to fade to gray
From the office parks to the union halls
People running scared if they can run at all
The jobs are gone, we can't move on
But it's not what it used to be
And we're trying hard to wake from this American Dream

sound best yet first off. like a whole new voice or something. you were in top form here, guy. sounds to me like they did an excellent job. as far as the dryness, i think *maybe* just a tiny bit more on your voice, but the music sounds fine. glad you went with the Nashv session. song was so worth it...and definitely glad you didn't dumb down the lyrics.
