Description
Have you ever been sitting in a café or somewhere similar, having a quiet drink, at peace with the world and someone comes and sits next to you and proceeds to preach at you about something which is obviously really important to them, but not at all interesting to you? They might be preaching about their religion, their views on climate change, their views on gun ownership or any one of a thousand other hobby horses. Doesn't really matter what it is, it sure does break the mood.
The Red Café does exist in a neighbouring town - Bega - it's a cool place to go and makes great coffee.

It's my one-man-band again on this, and it has taken quite a while to put together. Drums are midi, pencilled in from scratch.

Lyrics
In The Red Café
©2011 Neil Porter

Sitting in the Red Café
Had a big bad night and I’m miles away
I shouldn’t need that much to say
In the Red Café

You come in with the morning sun
The sunny mood’s just been undone
You come in with your blinkers on
In the Red Café

You make me feel real nervous
Scaring me to kingdom come
You got me damn near falling
Right off the edge of my seat
Watching my back, watching my front
Looking out for everything at once
Sometimes you get right in my face
This ain’t the place
To talk about your gods or your guns

I’ve read you in the Weekly News
I’ve read your crazy point of view
No evidence to make it true
In the Red Café

You ask me if the seat is free
You sit yourself right next to me
You say “my god can set you free”
In the Red Café

You make me feel real nervous
Scaring me to kingdom come
You got me damn near falling
Right off the edge of my seat
Watching my back, watching my front
Looking out for everything at once
Sometimes you get right in my face
This ain’t the place
To talk about your gods or your guns

The science is absolutely clear
Why is the truth so hard to hear?
There’s proof and knowledge everywhere
In the Red Café

You base your whole philosophy
On some doubtful ancient history
Your myths don’t make much sense to me
In the Red Café

Oh boy do I know this feeling well. You just want to say, "Can it you twerp!" Diggin' the lyrics, man how I can relate! Your vocals sound terrific, as always. Great song!

Thanks Danni
I had real trouble getting a vocal sound I was happy with here - hence the two mics. I really went off the NT3 earlier this year and was using mainly the M1S, but have decided that recording using both at the same time gives me more control when I'm mixing.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

jiguma all the way...
Hi Neil. The distinctive jiguma production precludes the distinctive jiguma vocals :-) Love the lyrics. I can't stand talk back radio and this sounds like you've had personal experience of the same type of thing in a country town. You must have a friendly (or gullible) face :-) The guitar work is great. And the bass and drums are rock solid. Good post! Regards, Peter.

Great stuff
Starts real melodic with those chords on the acoustic. Really like the chord progression ... very different ... melodic. Are they sus chords? Nice bridge then when it's back to the melody you do that sweet tinkering on the electric. I like the octave lead thing you do at around 3:52 , real nice guitar tone. Good lyrics. I've been there so many times. I usually just excuse myself and sneak out the door. This is great stuff. You have a very original sound . Your voice is sounds real good and clear. Enjoyed this.

Cheers Stan
Thanks for the nice comments. I'm a bass player originally, so I never really learnt any chords except basic majors and minors when I was very young. So ......... I have no idea what the chords in this are called (but I have a diagram system that reminds me how to play them). The fun part is when I try to show the band how to play some of my songs - they get a little cheesed off that I can't just tell them chord names. It usually works out OK (although I resorted to just two chords on my last song).
Thanks for dropping by,
Neil

At least I only spout off to the missus, poor long suffering woman .....and to my colleagues at work....but definitely not in a Red Cafe ...and there is one in York !

Nice song mate ,a timely reminder to shut me yap -in the wrong place!

i really like the 70's soft rock vibe
especially the first progression of each verse. sounds like sunday morning to me. then the bridge/chorus takes a completely different direction, very cool change, perfect execution of concept, nice calm sunday morning and then someone walks in and the atmosphere goes tense. Also, I like the jangle, and that verse has a great groove.

Red Cafe vibe....
... a relaxing retreat of a song, Neil. The mellow music is a perfect counterpoint to the lyrics of repeated contentious interruptions at the cafe.
Gosh, your recording is so crystal clear... great mix.

This is thinking out of the box
You're very creative on this song. I was listening to this with the beta MJ player on the way to work and was just blown away. Your vocals fit so well with what I consider this genre to be... Progressive acoustic rock. You keep raising the bar and I love it.

I
really enjoyed this song Neil. I like your subject matter and a very thoughtful explanation in the lyrics of a situation we have all been in one time or another.
I notice you are playing a lot tighter on your own material since playing with your band, this song has a great rhythm structure with lots of wonderful things going on, nice chords used and lovely guitar phrases.
A really great vocal and the mix is superb, the bass, guitars and drums all sound great together, it gives the song that great tight rhythm sound.
Excellent track and one of your very best.
Thanks for the download.

Solid in every way...
First, the subject matter is relevant.
Second, the composition is tight.
Third: the orchestration is simple and allows the vocal to shine with clarity.
Fourth: your vocal is superb.

I can't find anything I don't like about this song (not that I was looking). What strikes me the most is how economically you've written and recorded it. There is nothing fancy; only complete honesty and straight-forward thinking on every level. Neil, you've created something special, and the care you've taken with presenting it is such a treat to hear.

Love the lyrics and think the melody and vocal style complements them perfectly - there's a certain "Leave me a alone" tone that works. Musically very tight and the guitars are strong. Impressive post!

I remember...
...long ago, when jiguma mixes were a little crowded, a little murky...and still cool, because they were built on jiguma songs...

Now, though, an airy crispness is the jiguma hallmark. Super clear, everything nicely placed, every instrument separate, and yet still sounding like a "together" sort of recording...Neat stereo spread...You are certainly one of us among the "oldish guard" who went to school for mixing over the past six years... And I think, too, that part of the elegant mixing is that your arrangements are elegantly simple these days, with nothing padding or cluttering the sound...

Neatly crafted lyrics, Neil...I have certainly had plenty of times in my life when a slow wakeup over a strong cup of coffee was key to my sanity and survival, and being joined by someone talkative has busted the mood and the bubble....

Neat guitar figure throughout this, too...

Good song crafting. It starts breezy and lighthearted, but it's cool the way the music in the bridge starts to sound ominous, reflecting the lyric. Vocals, arrangement, and production are all strong.

Conjures up the essence of a morning session at the café. Then the dissonance of an unwanted visitor is well mirrored in the music.

Beautifully constructed and executed.

digging the intro. what a rich sound. your trademark breathy vocals in now. this is cool. beatlesque vocal bridge and back to the quirky main riff. liking this a lot. definitely one of your best. i think you could have gone somewhere else with it....maybe change the vibe for a bit....just for dynamic variety....and i didn't go for the sparkly end much. cool song though and excellent production and arrangement.

Stellar sound here Neil. Reminds me of the feel of something I can't quite put my finger on, but this is way cooler. interesting intro gives quite a setup.
how in the HECK didja come up with this melody?
or this progression, for that matter?
would love to be a brain cell inside your head!
the more i listen, the more unique this becomes.

this ain't the place to talk about your gods or your guns - that line stuck out for me as having a couple syllables too many - just my humble opinion. and i also think the mix is glorious! cheers, brother!

Great coffee
Sounds like a great place to go, as long as you can escape the looney conversations. Some people just need to vent over a Venti I guess.

Well, I have to first pick at the recorded vox, there's a kind of "phasing" that makes your voice wander from left-to-right a bit, and is a little distracting. That's the only negative point. The rest of it is stellar, I really like the drum-punctuation, it propels this forward nicely. I particularly liked the visuals caused by the line "you come in with your blinkers on"... that gave me the giggles, as I have "seen" that look in people before... shudder.
