Ain't That Strange?! (with Loob & MVH9591)

Description
“Ain’t That Strange” is one of the oldest songs I think John Carlin and I wrote, way back when we were in school, I’m guessing maybe early 1994! The way we played it back then was much more indie rock with a flat 4/4 beat and much quicker than here. I’ve even dropped in the old riff we used to play, at the end of the guitar solo just for old times’ sake. It’s the descending notes towards the end that’s repeated by both guitars. Other than that, this is a complete rework of the song… a LOT heavier! I started off going through my guitar effects bank and noting all the effects that I never use because they’re too loud and made sure to use the worst of the lot. The riff underpins most of the song so it was important that it was recorded using the heaviest setting I could get. I’ve always had the idea of having the guitar solo played by two guitars back and forth; perhaps the idea was better than my execution in this instance, but here it is anyway. This is note for note the old guitar solo we used to play, but done to the swing beat and across two guitars.

For drums, I knew I’d never get the feel I wanted using loops, so contacted my good friend Freddy Jams (Loob) at his F-Jams site and let him loose on it. Fred’s not a big fan of the distorted sound here but bless him, he persevered and got the drums exactly as I wanted them. And I mean exactly! My timing on the original takes was appalling so Fred also tidied this up a lot and cleaned up the sound on my vocal take as well, which was a re-do from the initial attempt where my singing wasn’t up to par. Then (despite his reservations) Freddy did a lot of cleaning and editing to get what we have here. My thanks to him for his hard work in the face of a very uncompromising sound that I had my heart set on.

After that, we passed it on to Michael House (MVH9591) who did such a great job on mixing and mastering “Bullfrog Blues” for us that we had to get him in on this too. He’s done a great job and I’m delighted with the results. It may be a bit noisier than what you’re used to hearing from me, but sometimes you just have to get loud!

Stephen – Guitars, Bass, Vocals
Freddy Jams (Loob) – Drums, Editing
Michael House (MVH9591) – Mix and Mastering

Lyrics
Ain't That Strange?!

So you thought there was a wind of change blowing it's way through to rearrange your life. Well I don't hear no wind and I don't see no change.
Well ain't that strange?!

So things were starting to go pretty well. You thought you'd finally get out of your hell. But I still see you burn and I still see no change.
Well ain't that strange?!

Seven years of trying to overcome the trouble. Instead of leaving, they've just doubled - still you try to cope. Still you try to keep hope but I don't see no change.
Well Ain't that strange?!

Barbed wire fences in your troubled mind mean your real self is hard to find. All this trouble, all this stress. You still keep doing your best but I don't see no change.
Well ain't that strange?!

You think you can hide in your imagination? Cowering behind a brick wall of creation can't be easy, oh no. The demolition teams go on but I don't see no change.
Well ain't that strange?!
Well ain't that strange?!

Michael did a hell of a job
Mixing all of this, and mastering it! I do like the song Stephen, and the way this is mixed, the distorted gtrs, are not bad at all. All I was about was to pepper in a little bit of sustained keys really. But indeed I like this final mix, and I think you have a very cool delivery and message with your lyrics. I was glad to be a part of this! Look me up for the next one too man. We worked it out. Another testement to good teamwork and great writing! Well done guys!

Cheers Andrew! I do love a good guitar riff (See "in new york city", "blue for you", "not my son"... and that's just the ones I've posted here!) Michael and Fred were such a great bunch of guys to pass some eight noisy guitar tracks over to and see what a coherent and well produced song they made out of it. I am very much in their debt. Thanks for your support and kind comments!

PS
Revisiting this song this afternoon Stephen and was wondering who wrote the lyrics, you or John or was it a joint effort with the verse. They are excellent--but then, so's the rest of this!

Lyrics
Thanks Michael. John's not a member here but he does drop by to see how I've murdered his songs from time to time! The lyrics are all his on this one; all the more impressive since he was about 16 at the time. I didn't write many lyrics in our joint efforts, with the exception of "devil's lies" which was 50/50. John has the talent for it so I let him get on with it. I have a folder full of pages and pages of his unused ideas, more poems than songs but occasionally I can bend a tune round them. Every so often he slays me - he had a line that went "Life is a tree-lined avenue of regrets, where only your heart remembers what time forgets." I didn't know where to begin musically with that as the line just floored me. Never used it but always remember it. The opening line in our next new song is a killer - stay tuned!

Cheers Ben. I like the idea of overdriven swing beats - works well in some stuff like U2's "Love and peace(or else)" and a few others so thought I'd try my hand at it. Certainly not up to their standards, but I like how it turned out. Thanks for having a listen and the compliments! Looking forward to hearing your latest when I get home!

The tone is set...
Freddy's power drums kick things off and then the heavy guitars kick in and the tone is set. Then I like the way the vocals contrast with the heavy vibe. Good song that is well produced. Kudos to all. Regards, Peter.

I agree with another comment up the line a little, this has a bit of "Spirit in the Sky" in its genetic makeup... Whether you're keeping a dance floor moving or a line of soldiers marching, I'd say you have an unqualified success here! Wicked good fun!

Great song
I really like the song, with the vocal melody standing out; that really makes it for me.

Regarding the mix, on my end the bass booms, and the vocals are quite loud compared to everything else.

The singing is very good, and I like that the rhythm guitar and guitar solo trade off between the right and left – the added effort involved in accomplishing that is worthwhile.

Thanks David. Perhaps some of the guitars are a little in the background, but with having sent Freddy and Michael some five or six guitar tracks to mix in they couldn't have everything up front I guess. Perhaps that's what's making the vocal stand out so much.

Thanks for the compliments on my singing - I'm not the most confident singer, not really a singer at all, I just do my best. The guitar solo trade off is an idea I've had for a while, but for my money it's never been nailed in performance as well as I think it could be in my head for any of the versions I've recorded. Maybe someday..

Cheers for taking the time to have a listen and provide such thought out and constructive feedback. It's very much appreciated!
