Don't tell me why...

Description
My first submission was on the heavier side so I thought this would be a nice way to show another side of my style. This was the first song recorded on my own on my imac w/GB back in November '10. I wrote this back in college for my band "Zero" which was my first "real" band. It never had a decent recording and I wanted to do it justice. My buddy Bert Hoopes wrote the lyrics which my cousin Shelby Chavez performed in this new version. I recorded/performed/arranged everything else. All comments/constructive criticism is very welcome (I'm always trying to improve). Thanks for the listen!!

We've all been in that place in love where you just don't want to hear it.......

Lyrics
V1
Don’t tell me why
Cause I don’t want to hear
Don’t make a grown girl cry
With your softly spoken reasons dear
Don’t tell me why
You’re ready so...
Just turn and go
Just turn and go...

V2
You’ve survived misfortune
Take time to clear your thoughts
You finally gave it all you had
And found the answers you had sought
Don’t tell me what’s right for you is right for me its obvious...
I don’t believe
So if you even want to try
Don’t tell me why

Chorus

All I want
All I need
Is all you’ve got can’t you see that
Unless you want to make
A grown girl cry
Don’t tell me why....

Thick
The modulation at 1:20 is most unexpected . . . what a cool surprise! I don't know if you ever listened to Kyuss, but the beginning, right before the modulation, reminds me a lot of Kyuss for some reason. It's thick and soupy, in a really good way. The time signature and tempo changes completely alter the mood of the song, which suits the subject matter of the song just fine, I think.

Beautiful vocals, but I think they should "soar" above the instrumentation just a little more. Maybe they just need to be pulled forward a bit. I'm not a production expert by any stretch of the imagination, though, so I'm not sure how to remedy this.

That's my only suggestion. Good work. :)

Thanks!
I've heard of Kyuss but never listened to them. I'll have to check them out. I agree on the vocals. The vocals dont pop out as much on the site's player like they do on my monitors and other players. I had tried a little tweak but then they were too much out front, so not sure. Anyhow, thanks for the listen and feedback, I really appreciate it!

a million seller!!
journeyesque!! Shelby could nail steve perry (vox wise I mean lol) this is very northern Cali circa 1978-81 oh man an underappreciated era but those tail end hippie bands made out like bandits with radio friendly rock like this. starship the tubes held up the old guard nightranger loverboy kept it fresh one of heavy guitar's last gasps.

it's nice to hear lead guitars and great soaring vocals combined keeping rock alive! great tune ;-)

on a journey
Hey Dimm, thanks for the listen. A comparison the Journey is a compliment in my books. I was a wee-laddy in that era but I grew up listening to those greats. If I can write a radio-friendly hook that gets stuck on your head (be it good or bad) then it's mission accomplished! :) Thanks again!!!

Don't tell me why
I like the tune. You clearly excel at heavy guitar tones and riffing. Very good vocal. I think she deserves to be out front a bit more. Maybe a few dbs louder on the lead vocal! All in all and excellent post!

thanx!
Thanks for the listen and feedback. The mix sounds different through the website to me. I agree she could be a little more out front. I'm learning that things change a little during conversion to mp3. Thanks again!!

Awesome
What a pretty voice Shelby has, please give her a huge congrats. Terrific song, the track is killer. I would suggest raising Shelby's vocals a bit. The track is strong so the vocals have to be stronger. Kick a$$, I really dug this!

She does have a great voice and I was excited she was able add her talent to the song. I'm hoping to feature her in a few new ones I'm cooking up. Thanks for the listen and the feedback!!!

Nice!!!
NIce!!!
I like the interesting tempo changes. Her voice fits the music and overall feel of the song to a T. Along with many other comments, some minor level issues with the mix will have this song perfected. Great second post my man.

Nice
Thanks for the listen kicbal! She did nail this one in a major way. This one was weird because the vox were either too hot or not quite enough. I'll probably play with it a little more and repost it at some point. thanks again!!

Nice contrast
I like the contrat between Shelby's fine vocals and the heavy guitar work. The tempo changes are smoothly handled and add interest. Others have commented on the levels. I concur. Strong post. Kudos to all, Peter.

Yeah ... the vocals are a complimentary contrast to that thick rhythm guitar. Love the guitar tones. I like the change around the 1:20 mark. Great playing and real good tune. It rocks!
