Description
This song was written by my late best fiend, Aaron Michael Leonard. He died in 1999, and I inherited his music catalog. Like me, Mikey was heavily inspired by Chuck Mangione. This song was always my favorite in his catalog, and since I was doing this CD with a level of seriousness heretofore unknown, I wanted this lovely song included. It needed significant adaptation and re-arrangement, but it retains its original essence. In what was one of the many small miracles of this CD’s production process, I decided to give the tune to Chris Vadala (Chuck Mangione's sax/flute player from 1975-1990). I recorded the flute parts with Chris in Rockville MD on August 29th of 2009; and I got to spend that day, the tenth anniversary of my best friend and "brother’s" death, recording his material with our mutual sax hero. How much better can life be? I'm playing the drums, bass, keyboard and guitar parts, Chris Vadala on flute.

Listened to this on the Beta test of the Macjams app. Very wonderful production and having mr. Vadalla here is a real boost. Great work.

There is a macjams app???
OK, where do I get it? :) Thanks so much for the kind words. Meeting Chris was a life dream, it was a really magical day. I shot enough video of the session to cut together a little "making of" documentary, I need to YouTube it, it is currently only on Facebook...

Had me swaying along on this one. I find as much to like in the very musical drumming and fab bass
as in the foreground flute--and that's a saying a lot. Totally pro production and arrangement. You have a serious skill set as as player, arranger and producer.

I wish I had a standup bass so I could play along to the wonderful stuff you're doing! I appreciate the production comments, I'm self taught, but I studied very hard... :)

I had a Chuck Mangione LP long ago...
Loved that music, and had almost forgotten about it until now, thank you for bringing back great memories. Wow, Chris is phenomenal there, and your work on this luscious piece of music is masterful. Superb arrangement, and excellent performance on drums and everything else (staggering array of stuff you play there!), though I'd probably lower a few drum hits here and there, seemed a little loud in a couple of spots relative to the mix... but that's because I was just floating along on this serene lake of sound and memories. Loved it.

Drakonis

Thanks, Drakonis!
Normally I'd agree on the drums, but it was a little bit of homage to my friend, that session was the most emotional playing I think I'd ever done to date (or since), and I just let 'em ring a little... I wanted that floaty feel, but I wanted to punctuate more sharply where the emotional sections of the song were... But yeah, I grew up on Mangione, I'm fairly certain his music shaped my arranging sensibilities more than anyone else... "Live at the Hollywood Bowl" is my stuck on a desert island album... :)

You like SKWERYL!
And SKWERYL likes your music too, we are very different but music is our togetherness and it is good! Reminds SKWERYL of American show we see on our tv's long time away it was the Hill street Blues policeman shoiw, it was very good! And your music is very good too!

Thanks, you face rocker-offer-dude! :)
It's funny you bring up the theme from Hill Street Blues. That song was written by Mike Post and Pete Carpenter, a team responsible for many of the best classic TV themes (Rockford Files, Greatest American Hero, Magnum PI, more), and they were a HUGE influence on me! Thanks man!

I'm sort of the anti-Jaco, eh? :)
Not very many notes, but they sit in the right places for the most part. :) Thanks much for the kind words!. I will say this though; being a drummer makes me a better bassist, and being a bassist makes me a better drummer, because I feel the pocket from two different points of view, and as a result I've learned what to listen for, where to play, and more importantly, where to shut up... I can't solo, basically at all, on any instrument; I derive my joy from being the supporting foundation, and providing a rich rhythmic and harmonic framework for the melodic players working with me... Nothing give me more joy musically than a well-tailored chord progression over a tight bottom end...

Hi Phil. Some serious music here (in a good way :-)) This just flows along beautifully. Chris's flute work blends in perfectly with the rhythm section, and as others have pointed out, the bass playing is stellar. Great post. Warm regards, Peter.

This whole CD was an attempt to put a contemporary yet authentic take on the seminal smooth jazz and jazz fusion of the late 70s and early 80s... Sounds like I may have succeeded... Makes my heart happy!
