You Seem Sad (w Scofugate)

Description
“You Seem Sad” is the first new song John Carlin and I have written in over fifteen years. It’s from scratch, not an old lyric sheet that I reworked or anything. In fact it’s actually the second new song, but the first hasn’t made it to completion yet so here we are! No small amount of trepidation to see if we could still “do it” after all these years… After John and I finished the words to the other song, a while later he emailed me with some lyrics saying maybe there was another song there, maybe it was a poem. The first line absolutely sold it to me. From there on in, there was a bit of work making each verse the same length of lines, the right amount of syllables to scan and that kinda thing and as we worked on that, the tune kind of popped into my head as these things do. Then after an initial false start at writing the music on guitar in my living room while my wife complained about dying in some computer game she was playing (not an ideal creative situation by the way!) I moved on to the MacBook and wrote it on the piano there, not something I’ve ever done before as my piano skills could charitably be described as childlike. But with a little Logic magic, I got there and built the song up layer by layer.

I tried to program some drum loops and do a bit of midi drumming to fill the gaps but was never really satisfied with what I had so got in touch with Scott Fugate who drummed on “Laughing on both sides of your face” to see if he fancied doing this and he very kindly said yes. Scott’s drumming speaks for itself, so it just remains to say what a pleasure he was to work with again; really positive, very accommodating and full of great advice on the mix as well as those fantastic drums and percussion. The backing vocals in the chorus are all me and I think I ended up with eight tracks worth, which was fun mixing for a novice such as myself. We never had a title for it, so when I sent a revised lyric sheet to John one day and Microsoft Word saved the file as the first sentence, that just stuck.

As I understand it, the lyrics are essentially an older self going back in time to their teenage equivalent to offer some advice and encouragement, but have a listen and read it as you will. Essentially it’s a song of hope for those with none, best characterised in another of my favourite lines; “Let hope carry you round the corner before too long”. Amen.

My thanks to Andrew (Alackbass) and Dani (Ravens), both of whom offered a lot of advice on the mix and recording process. Dani in particular went to great lengths to give me tips on both how to sing better and get better results from what was recorded. Just as well, as I need all the help I can get! =)

Stephen – Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Keys, Mix and Mastering
John Carlin - Lyrics
Scott Fugate (Scofugate) – Drums, Percussion, Mix and Mastering
Andrew Lack (Alackbass) – Listening, role model and all round good egg
Dani (Ravens) – Listening, singing coach and mother superior

Lyrics

You seem sad
Like a lover who never had the chance to shine. Don’t ask me if it turns out right. I shouldn’t even be here.

Things seem right
When you see them from a different point of view. But you don’t realise it do you?
Well do you?
--------------------------------------------

Fight back the pain and your tears. Listen to yourself, not your fears
Keep your head held high and carry on. Let hope carry you round the corner before too long
--------------------------------------------

Take a breath
I’d be glad to only have these things on my mind. I’m not saying you don’t suffer but is it really that bad?

Now take care
And make the choices that you want to make for yourself. Because they don’t belong to no one else
and you’ll get what you want.
--------------------------------------------

Fight back the pain and your tears. Listen to yourself, not your fears
Keep your head held high and carry on. Let hope carry you round the corner before too long
--------------------------------------------

Don’t worry so much. Keep your head up, you can work it out.
And when it works out then enjoy it without the guilt.
-------------------------------------------

Don’t forget
When you’re down there’s always something to bring you back. Keep hope close by and smile. Keep keeping on.

I don’t know all the answers
so I can’t pass them on to you. Maybe you should loosen up more.
Maybe I don’t know.
-------------------------------------------

Fight back the pain and your tears. Listen to yourself, not your fears
Keep your head held high and carry on. Let hope carry you round the corner before too long
--------------------------------------------

Thank you Stan. It took a lot of work to get this finished and I'm glad you liked the mix. This was my first serious attempt at mixing and mastering in Logic with what I've learned of late. I probably could have kept tweaking it forever but you have to let them go eventually! Scott's drums are fantastic and I can sit and listen to them on solo, enjoying them in their own right. In fact, I have done quite a few times!

Excellent..
Ohhh, I hardly ever use that word, but it's so well deserved here!

Stephen, it's really impressive listening to this now. Your vocals sound convincing & confident, just wonderful. The breakdown at 4:43, with those harmonies are perfect! The great thing is, you take suggestions/advice and actually use it, and it really does show here. Andrew & Scott are the perfect role models for that.

Scott, another fabulous performance. I just don't know how you do it sometimes, but don't ever stop, you're incredible!

Super duper collab guys, kudos to John as well, love the lyrics.

Dani, what can I say? Without your support and advice, this would not have been half as good. What's the point of asking for advice and then not acting on it? Even if it does mean scrapping your vocal and starting again! Andrew, Scott and yourself have been so much help on this and I've learned a lot. Scott is as we all know a complete legend and we're lucky he agrees to help us all out with his drumming with such enthusiasm and good nature. And John will be so pleased to see someone give him credit - I think that's a first and he earns a lot of it. Thanks a lot Dani.

Very good work
Love your voice here. Especially when you hit the chorus. I would like to hear the vocals up a db or two. The piano staccato thing is as loud as the vocal and to my ear, is a bit distracting.

Excellent work by all!

Thanks Charles. I tinkered about with the mix on this for literally months! It sounds completely different between my headphones and speakers so in the end I had to guess on the levels. But you're right, vocals up and piano down. Definitely a lesson learned for next time. I gotta give Dani a lot of credit for helping me with my singing - I've not got a perfect voice by any stretch but she taught me a lot on getting the best out of it. Compliments from an expert such as your good self mean a lot - thanks for having a listen and taking the time to comment.

Andrew, I'm not trying to suck up, but now when I do this stuff whether it's recording or mixing, in my mind I have you looking over my shoulder and I think "Would this pass muster with Andrew? No? Then stand up and do it again and do it right." I can't begin to think how to credit you for that but I can only say I hope to be as consummate a musician and producer as you are now. I really appreciate your advice and support and hope that your enjoyment of this in some ways pays you back. Thank you mate.

Oh, but I'm digging that bass line... it pulls the piece along greatly!! You have some great collaborative help, for sure. You did well with a complex mix, it's challenging to balance sounds from many different input sources, and you worked it out! Accompaniment is supportive of the lyric and vocal choices... Steven, this is very, very good my friend. Very reminiscent of Squeeze or Crowded house in its form and your voice is comparable in texture and tone to Neil Finn. The Piano is perfect for this and I love your choice of bass notes. Scott is always great! John wrote great lyrics. I love this!

As for the bass, well I think I owe more than a passing nod to Mr McCartney and "Dear Prudence"! Thank you Peter. The creation of this took a lot longer than what I usually do as I tried to do it all in Logic myself, which I'm in the process of learning! In some ways, I made a rod for my own back! The guitars were improvised on the spot when it came to recording, playing over and over till I got a string of melodies I liked - I'm surprised that method worked as effectively as it did! I'm glad you liked it - downloads are the ultimate compliment so thank you very much and I'm really pleased you enjoyed the tune.

Thanks Johannes. Trust me, as a vocalist, I have no class whatsoever. I put off singing this as I'm not that good at it. Then Scott asked for a vocal to go with the backer for him to drum to . Lo and behold when I came to record that, I had a bad cold and that vocal take was awful. Only Scott can testify to how out of tune and stuffy it was (never to see the light of day). Then a proper vocal, made up of a composite of four takes came along, which I remixed twice trying to get something decent out of it. I realised it was jsut rubbish, distorted in places and out of tune in others so while asking Dani for a listen was fortunate enough to get a ton of singing advice which made a lot of difference. Even with that, the vocal that appears here is a composite of a further nine takes! Of course, the Danis, the JDhollidays, the Natalie Scibettas would manage better in one five minute take but I have to work at it to get something vaguely usable! But I appreciate the compliment in spite of that. Thank you Johannes - Downloads are a huge sign that it was all worthwhile!

Cheers Neil. Scott is indeed a legend and a real privilege to work with. May his days be filled with cannoli! The music was far from effortless to create, especially with the added effort involved with navigating Logic, so I'm glad it's turned out as well as it has. Chet talk...
Well, Chet invented about a third of what we call our own. Don't feel bad though, everyone one uses it at one time or another. If you believe "Hey Bulldog" to be the last Beatles "group record", some do, check out George's solo, it's a Chet clinic, listening to this tune recalls that George used Chet's bag when he thought to impress... not a nit, a compliment!

Thanks a million Ben. I gotta admit, a fair bit of work went into getting a reasonable vocal for this and a great many takes were scrapped. I think the master here was a mix of about 12. Needless to say, advice and encouragement from the incomparable RAVENS went a long way to spur me on! I'm glad you liked it - thank you for such kind compliments! I really appreciate it mate.

Thanks Maurice. It's always a boost to get a nod from yourself on my songs! That stabbing piano took some work, as I'm not a great pianist at all. There was a fair bit of help from logic in getting it all in time but it turned out okay. Cheers for the kind words!

another great song .
This is great stuff , unpredictable and reminiscent of all the great British Rock bands that have made it into the timeless domain. Love your stuff , what talent.
Well done.

Thanks very much Cormac. I do love a bit of Brit rock - there's nothing quite like it, is there? A fair while has passed since I mixed this so I'm starting to feel my apathy towards another project fade away, but I'm glad the effort was worth it. Thank you for such a kind compliment.

Beautiful
song, beautifully executed. A song of encouragement and support based on experience in living. The vocal is excellent because I was focused on every word of the fine lyrics. Your guitar and Scott's drums are wonderful. Keep your coaches. Enjoyed this very much. Thank you.

Thanks Char. John's lyrics are indeed based on experience in living and God knows he's had more than his fair share of bad times. That's a hard way to get great lyrics but when life gives you lemons... Thanks for the vocal compliment - coming from someone of your calibre, that's a real boost. To be honest, many of my vocal takes left a lot to be desired and the master here is a composite of the good bits. I've saved all Dani's email advice and plan to refer to it before any future singing attempts! Thank you for your kind words here - they mean a lot.

Thanks Rolf. A ton of work went into this, maybe more than I'd have ideally liked, but I'm glad it all worked out well. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, is it? Cheers for taking the time to have a listen and leave comments.

Impressive
You have something to say - I like the way the lyrics are put together. Your vocal suits the messages you're conveying. The backing is excellent - strong beat with other things brought in to add depth. Excellent playing. Much enjoyed!

Thanks Philip. I can't take credit for the lyrics and I had a fair deal of coaching on my vocals from Dani to get them to this standard (if you can call it that) but looking back, I'm very proud of this one. Of course i had the inimitable Scott Fugate for company! Thank you for stopping by and the kind comiments. I appreciate it.

This needs...
... to be mixed or mastered by a professional engineer because the song and the performances deserve it.
Great musicianship and I really dig the chorus here...
Is that a harpsichord I hear on the right channel? If so last time I heard one featuring in a pop / rock song was on an auld Chris de Burgh album from the 70ies (when he was doing great music)...
Just listening to it a second time now... Great song!

Thanks a million Chris. Some very kind words there! The mix ... yeah, this was more an exercise for me learning to mix better. If you don't try you don't learn. But a million other people could do it better! Thanks for the compliments on the musicianship; I really got into this and tried to develop it as a song with a few musical layers - and well spotted on the harpsichord! There was originally a bit more of that but I pared it back to use it as a snippet to keep listener interest rather than drowning it. Glad you liked it.
Thanks for taking the time to have a listen and leave such great compliments.
