Piper on the ramparts at dawn

by

Description
The party is long over and everyone has gone to bed. Just a lonely piper is sitting on the ramparts, greeting the dawn with his playing.

This uses my (much beloved) Moeck Ehlert "modern" alto. It would be close to unplayable on a regular alto recorder.

Btw, this will be the last movement in my "courtly suite".

where
have all the pipers gone, the simplicity of the changing chord patterns, against the soaring pipes. crazy tones in this. I saw some south american flute players in the subway once had these reed looking instrument had almost this sound

I agree with everyone else...your breath control and emotion on this piece is fantastic. Equally important, however, is the composition. It flows nicely and changes moods effortlessly. Thanks for posting.

Some is good and some is bad
Hi VicDiesel !!!

Jesus said do to others what you like them to do to you .... So here it is and I'm not angry or anything. Believe me.

I don't know much about a flute and how that works otherwise you blow in it and then you are supposed to get sounds in form of nodes out of it. I know how to do that on a guitar but not a flute. Maybe later but I know when it sounds right meaning you 'hit' a node or not.

Try to record the 'song' again and then 'hit' the nodes: A, B, C, D, E, F & G. You have to many bugs & misses on this one although a minute or so seems to sound good.

Take a listen to a Dane who can play the flute 'Michala Petri'. She is world class and you might learn something and get inspired. Link: www.michalapetri.com

I'll get back to you later and hear how you're progressing as a musician.

Take care now.

Best Regards,
Claus Gamborg

Michala
Thank you for your expert advice. Is it ok if I start slowly and first practice the note A for a while? Then you can make me take a test and I'll move on to B, et cetera.

Re: Michala
:) You're most welcome 'master' but I don't think you really got my point. Nope it's not okay. You can go to a music school to get that sorted out with the A & B thing etc. I leave you with you're arrogance for now and get back to see how your music progresses and how your developing as a constructive and positive human being. You got a lot of potential there.

chromantic
a chording we will go. such unusually virtuosic virtuoso-osity you have. this stretches my tonal palette, dancing on the ramparts, but there's always something on the edge of the slippery wall that keeps me engaged throughout. masterfully done. personally I believe you are far beyond Gee already, possibly closer to Wiz.

Really nice playing, the song flows so well and makes for an intriguing listen. There are one or 2 points when I can hear you draw breath but it doesn't matter or detract from a very pleasant listen

Kudos.

Beautiful piece
This is a very well thought out piece with a lot of unexpected turns which I love. You went the road less traveled very often with your choice of notes in this. The synth pad is a great backdrop for the themes you use. One of my faves of yours! Nice.

Piper on the ramparts at dawn
Somehow I see you actually recording your parts at dawn as the sun rises. Rich full sound from the Moeck Ehlert. I wouldn't know one from the next but this sounds terrific. The backing tracks also compliment nicely. Love the progression/melody.

the piper plays for bystanders
I had an interesting image as I was listening to this song, like I was walking on some mountain path and came across this sound and saw you there playing by your lonesome. I guess what I heard was sort of a desolation but also strength and resolve. The title of this song is very derivative as you surely know. But this was a memorable piece.

hauntingly elegiac - really impressive finger and breath work. the chromatic runs border on insanity but you keep it just on the right side.

Vic,
you know your instrument. It is almost beyond my ken or barbie-(One or other of them would often say to one another...if dolls could talk, that is...I can't do unto you because I am not anatomically correct...)-that a human being can have as much talent as you do and that he can pull from a small tube the glorious sound you get with your breath and your fingers. You are amazing and you constantly surprise and delight. I love your music. Thank you, Vic.

Excellent Command of the instrument
The recorder definitely does your bidding on this tune; your technique is impressive, especially in your seemingly effortless execution of chromatics and quick changes of register. This is anything BUT effortless, I know; the recorder is devilishly difficult to play, especially the more modern pieces with lots of chromatic passages.

Personally, I found the accompaniment to be just a bit monotonous, but perhaps your intention was to showcase the solo part. I would have liked some variety, space and texture in the accompaniment, perhaps played by strings rather than synth.

The theme & variations structure of this piece is excellent, on the whole, but could have benefited from just a little trimming here and there.

Overall, however, I'd have to say that this is an excellent piece, performed by a true artist of the recorder.

accompaniment
I must admit that this is just about the least work I've put into the accompaniment of any recent piece. The published score also says "optional comtinuo", and I've recently played this as a solo in concert, which works just as well. Glad you liked my contemporary take on Van Eyck variations.
