Description
This is the second version I did adding to ShadowofNine's fabulous progressive rock groove, 5X4. Since I'm posting both versions, as companions, I'll repeat some of what I said in the earlier version, in case you only listen to this track.
A third extended version has been added: 5X4 by ShadowofNine extended. I'd prefer that one for downloading, but this page for explanations and discussion.
When I head this short but powerful piece, I loved it. Then I read that Dave couldn't think of a keyboard part and had posted his original version without one. So I wrote him and asked if I could give it a try. He kindly said OK.
On the first take, I added a B3: 5X4 by ShadowofNine (w/organ). I knew from my initial hearing that it was not merely a 5/4 prog rock groove, that it had some clever meter shifting. It proved far more complicated than I first thought, with 6/4 section transitions, 7/4 chorus, and a 4/4+5/4 B section. I flew in ShadowofNine's mp3 into Logic and changed the time signatures in the program as a guide. As the changing meters flew by, I could better tell where the hits should be placed. It was great fun.
I used replacement chords throughout to give the piece a heightened harmonic sense. Since the lead guitar was kind of buried in the original mix, and now buried further due to the added organ, I thought I'd add a Jordan Rudess style lead synth. I tried to fill in the gaps and play with the lead guitar when it was forward enough in the mix to sound like a duet. Dave liked this version best, as do I. It has more of a completed feel than the organ only redo.
Again, thank you, ShadowofNine, for letting me screw around with your very very cool groove.
(Dave gave me an ok to download the track, even tho he disabled the original. Also, I asked Dave if he wanted to post it, but he asked me to. So, here it is!)
