Description
After posting two versions of this previously, several people commented that it was too short. Then Dave suggested I add more somehow to create a better build. The easiest would be to extend the intro by cutting and pasting his original intro, easing into the keyboards a little. So that's what I did. It may seem kind of funny to consider a 2:34 minute song "extended," but here it is. I capitalized the X in the title to emphasize the extended quality. It made me smile. (Dave, I'll change that back if you don't like it.)
This is the third version I've done of ShadowofNine's fabulous progressive rock groove, 5X4. I'll keep all three versions up, as comparisons, but this one is mainly for fans of the earlier version for downloading.
What I did was first filter the original through the same Bass boost, re-EQing, banded compression, and limiting that I did for my previous versions. Then I used Jam to combine the two to disc, pasted them together (editing out everything after the first introductory sections A&B), flew them into iTunes and created the mp3. I also discovered a bizarre double downbeat about 2/3s way in that somehow infected my version and erased it.
I also tried to make the transition into the lead guitar entrance a little smoother by boosting the treble in the phrase leading into it. It helps a bit. The original was a bit overly compressed and the guitar was a tad too soft compared to the ride cymbal, so there wasn't as much to work with as I'd prefer. Still, it sounds better now, I think.
Please see the second version for a more detailed discussion of what I added:
5x4 (w/organ & synth) - version 2
5x4 (w/organ) - version 1
5x4 - original
