Concerto for Macjams (3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9-1/2 Movements)

Description

This has been MANY years in the making (as you can tell from listening). I was going to write 35 paragraphs about all that went into the making of this masterpiece, but figured it's what's up front that counts. Hopefully, I'll actually do something good next time but hell, look, I only just now figured out how to work this MIDI business* so this messterpiece will have to work for now! I liken this paean to an Elvis movie--something for everybody: a little dance, a little comedy, a little action, a little drama, a little music, a little romance. None of it well done, but a little for everybody.

Thanks for listening (and Salitaire, I put in something near the end for pop--it's Father's Day after all, and I'm sure he might be able to recognize "If I Had You" if it's not too mangled!)

* Any of you guys know how come when I worked the MIDI from the keyboard to my DAW (Acid Studio), I only got the piano channel but not the strings that were part of the "piano/string" setting I used originally on the keyboard? It sounded almost good that way but it didn't take! It would also be neat to figure out how to use the original "piano" sound that went into the MIDI--is that just a guesswork thing? Thanks for any advice! Michael

Oh my goodness, I have to start calling you fast-finger Freddy! I love the 2:12 mark, it's so groovy. Then the 3:44 mark and 4:11 are awesome. 4:46 is my fave, wow that is crazy, so cool. I love this, for your first recording with your new keyboard, this is truly fabulous, whew. You da bestest!

Yeah, I figured if I just kept fooking around with things I'd find come up with at least one somebody liked (this is called the kamikaze, no-nonsense approach to music). Well yanno, now that I'm ironing out bugs here and there, ya know what I'm going to do? I'm going to record an arrangement to sing too (actually, I'm working on that now). It will be like what some here call a karaoke track but it will still be a karaoke track only with me creating it and singing on it! Hooray! This is just a bunch of doodling around, something to record into the MIDI program; I promise next time I'll pay more attention to where the finger are flopping around! You are much too kind (and yes, stride piano and boogie are my favorite styles to play in so happy you enjoyed that little bit I tossed into this pot!) Concerto for Macjams
Awesome piece! So much wonderful genre mixing.

If I'm understanding your question the piano/string sound you wanted was generated by the keyboard. But acid recorded the midi data and then used a midi piano sound from Acid.

If you want the sound from the keyboard I think you need to record it as audio. Run an audio (1/4 inch) cable from the keyboard to the instrument input on your interface.

To do it via midi connect the keyboard to the computer via midi and select a piano/string patch from the menu of instruments in Acid.

So now can we PM you to contribute piano tracks to our collabs?

Thanks for the suggestions! I think there actually was a "piano/string" combo in the line up of MIDI sounds but I done rushed! As to recording the sound directly to the PC, I would run the audio cable from the keyboard to the PC then? Where I would I plug that end into? You see, I'm a knuckle head at this stuff--I kind of know the principles and what to do, but don't know exactly how to do it!

And yes! I would certainly be very happy adding some piano on any collaboration that might come my way--you take care now! Michael

That was a really really bad thing to listen to first thing in the morning! I wound up with a mouth full of hairballs, Michael, do take care next time and put on a warning label!

I actually was rolling on the floor laughing with my jaw agape at the raw virtuosity shown here (thus the collection of dust bunnies, blech). I think I may have to start referring to you as Saint Saens. Holy cow that was a fun romp, I loved the genre-jumping jet fighter approach here, gave me a great overview of your skills, again.

Now I think that I can help you with this....
but I won't.

Arf ,if you selected strings on your keyboard and played into a midi program you need to ensure that the track that you are recording onto is also assigned a similar patch...midi is a pain sometimes because (as Andrew said) it does not record as an audio track but just the "shell" of the signal that goes in ...I had a similar problem in Cubase and used to chew the frigging carpet in frustration 'til I found out wwhat was occurring....so to recap.....select a midi track to record on,assign the track the sound or "patch" (sheesh,computer nerds,why do they have to make up stupid names for things ?) that you wish...beware sometimes these are just numbers so you may need the book of words or the help file.....I hope I have not taught you to suck eggs or thrown your grandmother under a broken down fire engine (?)....and bollocks I have just read the question again...simple answer is that you can only record one patch at a time onto the one track....unless you audio it like Andrew said........( sound of shot in the wings )

Hi MJK. Just trying to do some catchup listening - still in hospital :-( - but this just blew me away. I never knew you had other strings to your musical bow (when it seems in fact you have a whole quiver)!
