Lyrics:
Music to hear, why hear'st thou music sadly?
Sweets with sweets war not, joy delights in joy.
Why lovest thou that which thou receivest not gladly,
Or else receivest with pleasure thine annoy?
If the true concord of well-tuned sounds,
By unions married, do offend thine ear,
They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds
In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear.
Mark how one string, sweet husband to another,
Strikes each in each by mutual ordering,
Resembling sire and child and happy mother
Who all in one, one pleasing note do sing:
Whose speechless song, being many, seeming one,
Sings this to thee: 'thou single wilt prove none.'

Well done Richard... &mdash 01/31/05 - 09:30:16 PM
with this intitial offering of one of Shakespeare's more
difficult sonnets. The many plays on words and double
meanings make it somewhat of a challenge to understand.
I do like the musical "major" interpretation you bring to it
here.

A word of advice: Read the lyrics as you listen, maybe
more than once.

Let's hear the feedback.

Jack

Your singing is very in-tune. Your style just radiates high
culture. The harmonies are very pleasant to hear.

The guitar picking and strumming is really clanky though.
If the guitar is not of high quality, I would recommend
setting back the guitar further from the mic. *There was
an
instance at the end were you set the strumming in reverb
and it sounds less harsh, actually sounded smooth.
If you have one mic, would get that mic higher away from
the guitar and highlight the voice.

"They do but sweetly chide thee, who confounds
In singleness the parts that thou shouldst bear. "
*Midway through the song indicated above is were the
guitar strumming sounds ok.

To me you have been a great benifit to this site. Your love
of poetry is very contagious. You have a voice that fits in
quite nicely with your words or words of William
Shakespeare.

To me your voice and harmonizations sounds very
professional!!

Tiler: This was actually done October 2004 before I knew how to play guitar
very well. I still don't know how to play guitar very well but I do have a better
guitar and I do know how to mic it better. We thought we'd go ahead and
throw this out there, despite the obvious defects you so rightly pointed out,
and as a prelude to "Music to Hear" in A minor. Please promise you'll come
back to listen and compare. The two versions are distinctly different. Here is a
sneak preview of A minor version: http://www.schletty.com/music/

Thanks, Tiler, for the careful listen. - Richard

Great Voice! &mdash 02/01/05 - 04:37:44 PM
Not really my kind of music but I like your voice a lot.
Reminds me a little of Scott Walker. Let's hear some more.

Good job Guys! &mdash 02/03/05 - 12:01:18 AM
REALLY like yer voice in this tune Rich...very dead on-not
one note out of place!!!

This is interesting stuff and you guys should really do
more....very cool indeed...

The only thing I can pick at is a timing thing in the
beginning of the tune....maybe its just me but the guitar
seemed to be a bit off when the initial "beat" came
in....very very small slip...easily remedied....but anywayzz

Good job!!

Thanks, James T II. I appreciate your comments. We will have to fix that
timing thing in the beginning.

Ronnie,

Thanks for giving this a listen and leaving some comments. Any feedback or suggestions are always welcome. We will be coming up with more of these "Bard Tunes" as time allows. This is our third sonnet (although still in the works) with a fourth in the beginning stages.

sonnet 8 &mdash 02/03/05 - 01:07:09 PM
Wrangling meaning out of Shakespearean English is no easy task for the modern ear, yet you guys pull it off with bravado. The instruments are contemporary, yet your rendition carries a strong Elizabethan accent. I look forward to hearing the alternative take - it should be an interesting comparison - and to listening to more "covers" of the sonnets.

Warren: Thanks for your appreciation and encouragement. The A min version
has a very different feel to it even though it attempts to convey an identical
message.

Excellent Vocals &mdash 02/03/05 - 02:22:35 PM
Yes, the guitar needs work, but you know that. The vocals
are great. Did you sing all the parts? If so, you have an
amazing range - bass, melody, and high harmony. I
especially like the vocal treatment on "mother" - its hard
to nail that (for me, anyway) and move around with ease it
seams. Unfortunately, I can't hear the Am version since
they block mp3s here at work (QT flies under the radar, I
guess). But I'll check it out at home. So far, I like the
major key.

Excellent Vocals &mdash 02/03/05 - 04:42:40 PM
Thanks, JimmyMac. Yes, Schletty sings all the parts in this particular song.
Jack Miller (dadai) is doing some very nice vocals in Sonnet 138 which we're
working on now. It is a markedly different approach...oops, can't give it all
away yet.

As far as my range, yes, I do stretch it from bass all the way to
counter-tenor without using any electronic wizardry. In fact, when my wife
found out it was me singing those falsetto parts in some of my songs, she
said, "That worries me, Rich."

That "mother" phrase. Being that I'm half-Lebanese in addition to being half-
baked, I guess some of that Middle-Eastern voice bending or grace note stuff
is in the blood that courses through my vocal tract.

I come back to listen to this almost a year after recording it and it sounds so
slow to me! If Jack and I (and any other collaborator) re-record this now, it
will be done at a faster pace. Thanks for commenting on the song, Cori. I'm
glad to know you feel there's potential in it.
