Description
This theme of this song is the conflicts that weary us between 'good and evil', for want of a better expression. Each side is represented by an endlessly energetic being, doing battle in our hearts, but the ground they fight upon is not so durable and persevering sometimes. Certainly the ground becomes pitted and torn, and broken in this less dramatic sense, but it can also be broken as in defunct, too, or insane.

A strange song, perhaps, with its dissonant phases, about a strange situation!

Hope it is not too depressing an effect!

Cheers now

Lyrics
The Broken Ground

I’ve seen hosts of angels,
Fighting just for me,
And I’ve seen heaven’s glory,
So beautiful and free,
But tireless and fell are they,
That keep the field in Satan’s pay,
And on and on and
on and on and,
on and on and
on and on and,
on,
the battle goes....

How bright the light immortal,
It’s more than words can say,
And the undying evil,
How powerful are they,
But mortal is the suffering field,
Where neither God nor Devils yield,
And though the horns and
Bugles sound,
They stamp and run,
And fight so hard upon,
The broken ground,

a melancholic...
... and reflective sound, which I like and always a good thing. Nice subtle music bed. I love your outro with the vocals.

Nice picking mate, good tune, nice to hear some percussion on one of your tunes
mrattue said 2362 days ago (June 27th, 2011)
Hi Neil!
Thanks for listening to this one.

i would love to put a bit more percussion on my stuff but my sense of rhythm is very poor and it is difficult to get an effective sound out of a machine, i find. My father had rhythm coming out of everywhere and i am very annoyed that it has not been passed down!

Nice melody and lyrics. Nicely sang. Good job with all the little musical nuances. I like the cello and bits of percussion. Well done melodic picking.Enjoyed your experiment with production.

Glad you liked the nuances. It's so much fun with GB trying all sorts of different sounds, isn't it?

Thanks for listening.

Hi Marc
Nice track. The drums are a bit hard to hear in the mix. You might want to try a beat during parts of the verse too. I'm hearing something halftime. I like this.

Hi, Freddy!
See what you mean about expanding the percussive element. Thanks for the tip.

i really struggle with rhythm in general. i think it's my weakest suit.

Intellectually and musically interesting
Hi Marc. Been out of the picture for a while (still am) but I find that you always present something intellectually and musically interesting and I enjoy that. This song delivers nicely in both regards. You are getting more inventive and creative with your instrumentation and it has added real character to this. Enjoyed! Peter.

Hi Peter!
Thanks so much for the comment. You are a great encouragement to me.

i am sorry you are a bit out of the picture, and i certainly hope that you won't go entirely.

i do enjoy messing around with different GB instruments when the song seems to invite some sort of more complex sound bed.

Really pleased that you thought the mix effective.

Cheers now and take care.

Wow! This song is solidly in the great English folk tradition. The arrangement is superb, my hat is off!

Nice to part of a continuation. Gives me hope that i am not entirely out on a limb!

Glad you liked the arrangement. It was a bit experimental, for me. Would never have gotten there without the ability of GB to just try things and see what happened.

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment. So encouraging.

Cheers now

The purpose of music
It's usually literature that is said to explore the human condition, but music often does to - as you show in this piece. A thought-provoking song and your presentation captures the situation very well. Interesting playing, too, with that dissonance creating an eerie mood. Much enjoyed.

It's such a pleasure to read your feedback on this one. I didn't know what people were going to make of it, to be honest. Especially the dissonant passages i imagined would be a bit off-putting, but the subject matter really dictated it, because it is not a comfortable theme. The use of dissonance is one of those individual things! i am so glad that it was a plus for you.

i am very encouraged also that you found it thought-provoking!

A little different
from your other stuff but it works really well.

The instrumentation creates a rather uneasy and unsettling atmosphere.

Really nice work.

Hi Dick!
Glad to have made a bit of a departure in a way. i am beginning to wonder if i am repeating myself somewhat at times.

Glad the dissonant bits worked for you. Always a tricky business.

Thanks for the comment.

Take care

liked it too...
It all works. Lyrics really get me. Yet the song sees the battlefield from only the view of those caught in between (of course that's all of us), while there is perhaps much more to the stage. Another view might completely change everything. Have you ever heard David Wilcox's song "Show the Way?" An interesting contrast to your well done song.

Thanks for commenting on my daughter's violin piece which resulted in discovery of this song.

No problem about posting the comment. There is so much creativity and good music on this site that i wish i could spend more time listening and encouraging people. i know that i have received a great deal of encouragement from MacJammers in my songwriting and performing and, since i don't play live, i don't know where i would be without their interest and suggestions over the past year.

Glad you liked this latest song of mine. i will certainly chase up the track you mention. i suppose there is something a little ungrateful in my view of things in this song. At least we are considered worthy of being fought over and defended from evil, even if it does get a bit tiring when neither side seems to be able to win out over the other!

Cheers for now, and take care,

My regards to your daughter. Music is such a wonderful way to explore life, and somehow we never say anything more profound than when we sing or play an instrument, i think.

That is some tight guitar work.. Sounds awesome. Nice singing as well. Honestly I think this song would be perfect without the simulated drum and horn. But that's my opinion.

Hi Andrew
Glad it came across all right. The drums have been reworked recently courtesy of Loob, though i rather like the horn sound. Always good to hear the vocals were effective because they are so difficult to change and carry the sincerity of the piece.

Thanks for listening and leaving a comment.
