Description
Honky-Tonkin - The story behind the song !

A Collaboration in the best sense of the words.

Back in late April, I was playing around in Logic with some Guitar, Bass, & Drum rhythms. I started to write lyrics for yet another crying in your beer song based on what I had so far done on the music part. But one day, while iChating with guygrooves, I sent him the music file to see if he had any ideas for where to go with it. I wasn't really happy about the direction the lyrics were going and thought he might be able to help. Guy got inspired and made a some suggestions that clicked in my head. It took it toward, "The Dark Side" so to speak. So instead of a "Crying in your Beer" song it was a "The Hell With This, Lets Go Have Some Fun" song.

I started making changes in the music to take it there, and Guy started working on some parts that would work in the new direction. By this time it was late May, and Guy was about to get on an airplane and come down to Slo-Parts Studios for a little visit. His trip to Barling, had been planned for several months, and we were both anticipating a great visit and having a lot of fun together along with SloPartner, Jeannie, as we all got to know each other face to face. (It was a fantastic visit)

While Guy was here we got into the studio for a time and laid down a few tracks on the new version of "Honky-Tonkin". We did the vocal tracks, and Guy laid down some rhythm tracks using my Pawn Shop Special Peavey Generation EXP imitation Tele. When Guy got back to Calgary, he put the vocal tracks through Melodyne and tweaked them until we had the best possible tracks for the song.

While Guy took care of the vocals, I started adding or replacing some guitar tracks to make the song better. After listening to the new guitar tracks I'd done, and especially listening to the piano part I'd used in the bridge, Guy got inspired to drag out his Harp and put down the most fantastically inspired Harp track ever to replace the harp track I had done with some loops for the Bridge.

After many back and forth sessions between Guy and I trying out different mixes we finally came up with the one we wanted, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we did building it. This is a fun song, so sit back, keep your feet from beating the floor to death as the song plays, and enjoy.

Honky-Tonkin' Key of E-Ma j Tempo 115 BPM

Intro - the phone call

Guy: Ring Ring, - Hello
Ed: Hey Guy, what cha doin' tonight ?
Guy: Nothin' in particular, why?
Ed: I'm about to go crazy just sitting around doin' nothing'. I feel like goin' out and makin' some noise. Wanna go down to Mad Man's Honky-tonk ?
Guy: Hell yeah. I been wantin' to shoot out the lights for some time now,
Ed: Well, Mad Man said any time we wanna do a show, just come on down, so lets get our gear and do it.
Guy: Okay Bro, I'll pick you up in about an hour, you better be ready !
Ed: Oh yeah, I'll be ready to go
Guy: Yeah right !

Verse 1

Sometimes a man's gotta do - what a man's got ta do
And raisin' a little hell - is what we wanna do
Yeah specially when I'm tired - of that the daily grind
I said the world is closin' in on me - I'm about to lose my mind. Amen Brother
Time to play a little music, maybe some Mighty Merle
Waylon & Willie on the road again, goin' all around the world

Chorus 1

Yeah we're goin' Honky-Tonkin, playin' till the crack of dawn
I'll still the last man standin' after that crowd is gone
I said Honky - Tonkin', - layin' down a little soul
Honky - Tonkin, Honky - Tonkin' it don't never get old
Honky - Tonkin, we're goin' Honky - Tonkin
Play it Guy

Bridge

Verse 2

Me and Guy goin' down, to Mad Mans Bar & Grill
Gonna strap them Guitar's on, and give the crowd a thrill
Yeah from Johnny Cash, to Jerry Reed, to John Lee Hooker's Blues
pickin' guitar and chasin' women, and sipping' on some booze
Well we're gonna get in trouble, but hell that ain't no news
When we go Honky -Tonkin we ain't got nothing to lose.

Chorus 1

We're goin' Honky-Tonkin, playin' till the crack of dawn
Still the last man standin' after the crowd is gone
Honky - Tonkin', - layin' down a little soul
Honky - Tonkin, Honky - Tonkin' it don't never get old
I said Honky - Tonkin, we're goin' Honky - Tonkin

Tag lines:
Honky - Tonkin', - layin' down a little soul
Honky - Tonkin, Honky - Tonkin' it don't never get old
I said Honky - Tonkin, we're goin' Honky- Tonkin
Play it out Guy

A little outlaw country comes to MJ courtesy of two of our finest! Ripping guitars, pounding piano, screaming harp! And the conversational duet vocal is awesome! Thanks kindly gents!

Congratulation Andrew
For being first to post to this wonderful new song by the world famous sloparts, you will receive a years supply of ought. You really ought to have won some wonderful prize, but we couldn't get sloparts to poney up 1 red cent towards anything we mentioned as a suitable reward for first posters.

In other words, he's too cheap to give you anything. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Sorry about that.

Now that I haven't given you a prize,
I thought maybe the least I could do was say thanks for listening Andrew. I do appreciate that so much, as well as the kind words you left for Guy and I.

We wanted this to sound like a couple of guys heading out for the bandstand and doing their thing. We were hoping for a live feel, and I think maybe we got there. But that is really for you guys and gals out here on MJ to judge.

Thanks again Andrew, be well and be cool,

Ed

It took a little longer to come out of the shoot than we planned, but I think the extra effort Guy and I put into it counted. Guy's very good at listening and figuring out what a song needs, and that was true on this song for sure.

Glad you like the song Vic. Thanks again for the kind words, they are appreciated.

Oh yeah, Karen it was a blast for sure
First thing we had to do was get the recording equipment down to Mad Man's so we could get that live take from the band. Then we had to go back into the studio to add some polish and a few additional track and then mix and master it.

It took a while but we finally got it done. Just kidding about the Mad Man's bit don't ya know.

Thanks again Karen for listening and the very kind words. We're thrilled you enjoyed the song so much.

I know what ya mean Sheila
I caught him stuffing 2 or 3 rolls in "MY" Guitar case. Lord know how many were sitting out in the back of his pickup. Just to be clear, I did not bring fun. I left her at home for the night because I knew that too much of a good thing can ruin the party, and Jeannie is just the right amount of fun all by herself. My head would have exploded from overfun if Jeannie had been there too.

Glad you liked our efforts on this one Sheila. Thanks for the great comment and the kind words about Guy and I. We love ya baby

Everybody..... especially Ed for putting together such a wonderfully inspiring backing. Mostly, for putting up with my perfectionism and so graciously letting me have my stubborn way. Ed you are genius, who will never admit it, and that is entirely why you are. Love ya big bro, thanks again for putting up with me both in person and online.
Peace

Perfectionism is a good thing Guy
That's one of the things I love about you is you tenacity to get it right. It's what makes your work so good when it comes to music.
It's one of the reasons we work well together, we both want that for the song, which is what really counts, getting the song right. As for the in person part, our visit was one of the best times I've had in a long while. We had fun, ate a lot of ice cream, (sssh, I won"t tell Terry), laughed, cried, shared, and became family even more than we had already done in our online chats. The best time ever !

You've become the little brother I never had in real life. Sometime a pain in the ass, but always there when the chips are down and willing to take it to the next level when times are tough.

Love ya Bro, and especially what you brought to this song, among the many other reasons, and that goes for Jeannie too.

Good to see you came over to listen. Guy and I appreciate that a lot. We wanted that call/response kind of thing for this one, kind of like 2 best friends on a bandstand just gong back and forth about the day, life, and the music. It's kind of like you said about the outlaws, but maybe not quite to the levels Waylon and Willie would have taken it.

Thanks again for checking it out and the cool comments on it my friend.

Hey, outlaws!
Hey, Willie & Waylon, nice back & forth. I've been away for so long, the pressure builds to offer an intense analysis... but this is fun, no pressure in the playing OR the listening, just good grooving. And just like you said, Ed, that harp playing's great, nice and natural. Nice tone on them guitars, and the whole band sounds like a natural live mix.

Hey there Bro
Glad you like the song Bob. Guy and I decided early on this needed to be a just for fun song, and kept that in mind as we were working on it. That said, we did take care to try and get the parts to gel together in a way that gave the song the drive it needed to be able to deliver the message and make it believable in the context of a live band feel. I'm no altogether sure we made it on the live band recording part of it, but I do think we came close.

And about Guy's harp part, I totally agree, he did a hell of a job laying' that harp part down. One of the best I've heard in a long while, I'd say. I know I can't speak for guy, but I think this is one of the best we've ever done together, and ranks up there with some pretty good stuff as far as my own personal song catalog is concerned.

Glad to know you liked the song Bob and we both appreciate you leavin the kind words for us on it. It really is appreciated my friend.

Hello Cat
Thank you for coming over to listen, and for the great comments you left for Guy and I, We really appreciate that. I have to give full credit to Guy for that Harmonica part. As he said to me, listening to the piano part in the break inspired him and he really got into it on the harp.

We wanted it to have the feel of a live gig, with a couple of old guitar playing buddies just going out and doing their thing at some little local joint. I think we got there, but it's not for us to judge that, it's for you.

Anyway, we thank you again for the kind word, Cat.

Really glad you got to hear this one. This is the song Guy and I were working on when he came down from Calgary to visit for a few days. it really was great having the chance to meet guy face to face, and then go in to my studio and lay down some tracks for this song. Glad you got to hear this one, it was great fun putting this together with Guy. He's a very talented and knowledgeable musician that makes it easy to put together a great song.
Thanks again for the kind words Chris, Guy and I both appreciate it a lot.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Thank you Dick
glad you enjoyed the work we did here on this song. It was supposed to be, and I think is a jaunty little ride through a couple of mates having a good time doing what they love to do, play music. And in fact that's what Guy and I did was have a good time building this song to what it is.

Thanks again for coming to listen my friend, and for the great comments you left for us. I'm sure Guy is just as pleased as I am about that.

Be well and be cool my friend,

Ed

Good song.....
I'm sorry but for me it does get old, how many time are we going to
play that chord pattern....
You wrote a good song around it and all is recorded in a modern way,
vocals and all but for me it's time to stretch and play something a little
deeper....I mean that pattern has been beat to death, Ed you know me
and this is my truth speaking.... Delete this if it's not what you want to hear...

Hello there Tony
Thanks for the listen and the honesty my friend.

I know what you mean about this particular song structure. In 1962, when I was in the barracks at Travis Air Force Base, a guy there had a guitar and generously offered to show me a little about playing the guitar. Well, the very first song he taught me, after I learned the chords was "Honky Tonk", so yes, this has been around a long time and is getting a little "Long in the tooth". So it is due for retirement, and actually was due some years ago.

What Guy and I did was have some fun with the song we put together because we wanted to. And for us it was a blast doing this song. I'm glad you liked the song we built and took time to say so in your comments, we both thank you for that. Now it's time to move on and see what other mischief we can get into doing something new. Time will tell where that takes us, my friend.

Thanks again for your honesty and your perspective, I consider it valuable input and food for thought.

Be well and be cool, Tony.

Ed

Thanks Phil
The friendship and the song go hand in hand, Phil. We became best of friends over iChat, and earlier using Skype, and if we lived closer than a couple thousand miles from each other, I could see this kind of jam session actually happening at "Mad Man's" or whatever the local honky tonk might be called.

So yes, we are right at home working together on this, and indeed will likely be doing many more collaborations together as time goes on.

Thanks so much for listening Phil and for the very kind words you left for Guy and I. We appreciate that more than you know my friend.

Be well and be cool,

Ed

Swagger
I like the premise: two old, bored rockers deciding to re-live the wild past by swaggering down to the local waterhole with guitars in hand. Will they actually do it? Highly unlikely … but it's the thought that counts!

Or rather, the execution of the thought in a musical expression.

Don't you love that moment when, after struggling with a song's formation that just isn't working, the idea suddenly shifts and you know it's the way it should go?

Honky-Tonkin'
Well Ed, I know you're not here to read this comment I'm writing now, I did write one somewhere, must have been facebook when Guy posted the song. I've listened to this a few times!! I'm so grateful for for this song, to hear your voice, you and Guy speaking, is a treasure for me as I will never meet you this side of heaven, but hey, will meet you one day!! July 4, 2011 was your last reply here on this thread I see, I hope you somehow know how often I have play this song :) I really like the easy going feel of the song, just having some fun and all the way through takes you right into your live gig, yes, you both nailed it :) ..and the harmonica Guy played was spot on in the perfect place. A memorable, time for both of you, precious!! Thanks for sharing your gifts Ed and Guy!! Cheers, Deb
