then it started to rain

Description
Recorded on a rainy day during the recent holiday. Do not adjust volume for beginning - it gets louder as it goes. Still in a slightly menacing SciFi mode - but trying to take the Floyd exit I guess. Plenty of Tal synth again - and the organ is thanks to M2 freebie finds Combo Model V (a great instrument) . Godin Strat and Ibanez bass through Line6 GearBox.

Does the mess of distortion work - or is it just me? Thanks for listening.

Wish you could send some of that rain this way Bud,We're in a freekin drought here in South Carolina.

High gain guitar with distortion can be a beautiful thing, and you handled it well.I really like the chucking...Gilmouresque.

Atmospheric
Like the artwork. The intro builds menace and prepares for the entry of the distorted guitar. Like the guitar lead - definite Floyd influences (a good thing) and the drums keep the pressure on. Sounds like it bucketed down :-) and then just drifted away. Enjoyed. Take care, Peter.

This builds nicely. I like the synth start ... you sense something menacing about to happen. The drum rolls work well and then that chucka chucka guitar rhythm punches in followed by that biting guitar lead. Great crunchy guitar sound you're getting. Excellent use of the drums and synth ... the mess of distortion works great!
at around 3: I like how the drums stop and you let the synth take us out except for a few symbol hits. It feels like I have gone through a brief but powerful storm. This is well produced and sounds real good in my phones. Very creative stuff, .... love that pic!

The opening synths are two
loops - one midi run through the Tal Noisemaker - and the other audio - both bit crushed and tweaked to fit. One of the guitar tracks in the background is very distorted and gated in a way that it sputters a bit. The others are just heavily driven with delay and phase. The drums are and orchestral loop edited in midi and assigned different voices - then augmented by a few tracks of single hits. Thanks for taking the time for such a thorough comment.

I like the synth intro, does a nice build to where the guitar kicks in. I agree with you and the others on the Floyd reference, and I think I also hear a Genesis influence too. Distorted guitar works well, some really nice playing.

yeah
you're tearing up that lead, nice! Listened on headphones; that kind of "circular" panning on the guitar starting at 0:45 to 1:38 was bugging me, but you resolved that with all the rest of the lead thereafter. Cool tune, Bud

Drums
Man I love the drums here, simply awesome. I'm a sucker for big tom hits. Guitar work is, as I would expect from you, amazing. The whole thing has a filmic feel, almost spaghetti western style. Also puts me in mind of Iron Maiden in places, especially their live shows. Love it.

I like using orchestral loops for rock songs
that's where the toms come from. I dragged the midi around until it fell into a cool groove - the tweaked from there and added some extra hits. Thanks.

Lightning in the air
Nice power. Straight ahead strength and balance. Distortion works for me. Is this a soundtrack or a music bed waiting for development? It sounds full and steady, but it also sounds like something more might happen as it fades into the threatening horizon...

I wonder if distortion was ever
attempted or appreciated before electric instruments? I guess discordant and atonal classical music achieves a similar effect - and some gamelan music seems to hover around the edges of distortion. Thanks for dropping by.

mess of distortion
works. i listened a bunch of times trying to figure out your approach to the solo. i like how there's no real pattern to the way you speed it up or slow it down - that keeps it interesting. I also like the way you run down the fretboard now and then - too many soloists run up all the time, to me that sounds too obvious. i like it when you throw those low notes in there. that guitar has a nice tone - what pickup settings is most of this? or did you mix it up?
Check out my latest song called Suck at Love
bud said 2325 days ago (July 11th, 2011)
Can't say there was a strategy on the lead
the playing was informed by the sound to a degree. Once I got the right level of drive and distortion I wanted it to sound like the guitar was alive and being wrestled with to create any sensible lines.Of course those lines are tried and true pentatonic figures (some day I'll graduate to more options) and the playing down was the way to get to hold the low tones that I liked. Garcia always impressed me with the way he played descending leads that still sounded uplifting - and I listened to a lot of Garcia. On all of the tracks I was playing the bridge humbucker pickup - the single coils were just too noisy. My guitar has the usual 5 way seelector switch with a humbucker at the bridge that can be split by pulling on the tone control to create and authentic 3 single coil strat setup - but I usually just use the humbucker alone.

Distorted rain
@0:47, that's a -real- Floyd exit Bud. Sounds more like the Barret Floyd than Animals to me, Astronomy Domine more precisely. I was almost waiting for the voice to appear.
Everything works great, no mess at all. Or rather, the exactly right amount of mess the psychiatrist prescribed for me.
I waited for the 0:47 tension to come back though. Hey, no problem at all: I can listen to it again and again ;-)
