Description
A long time back I wrote and recorded this song, using my first ever electric guitar. That guitar, a Behringer strat copy, had horrible intonation, couldn't stay in tune for more than five minutes, had a horrendous action and I struggled to play it.
I know a bad workman blames his tools, but that first version of this song suffered as a result of that guitar, as was pointed out to me on the comments section.
It's taken me the best part of 3 years to get round to re-doing this song. I have better guitars, for sure, and I suppose three years of playing has improved my technique. I feel the song was strong then and was wary of diluting it by going back and being too tempted to change it. To the best of my ability I have re-recorded the guitars, bass and the vox in their entirety but attempted to keep the vibe of the original.
I think this version sounds very strong, and it wasn't until I played the old and new side by side that I heard just how out the intonation was on that horrible strat copy. (An 'E' power chord at fret 12 on the old guitar actually registered as a D!).
The main opening guitar is the Dot Studio, through the Irish Echoes preset in Logic (with a few tweaks). The lead riff is played on my Ibanez, using the Stadium Stack preset, again tweaked and with some EQ sculpting. The rhythm section in the verses is the Dot played through Dublin Delay, EQ'd and with compression by the Liquid Mix box.
I hope I've done this song proud, many people told me it deserved it.

Lyrics
Could Adam know the truth of things
As he stepped into God's land?
The withering, the suffering
The forests turned to sand
Could our hope survive as our planet dies
And we tumble through the void
the ship we sail has lost it's way
The Earth has raised her voice
Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out
The seas comes flooding back to claim
The mistakes that we made
And mountains sit impassively
As our presence starts to fade
The hourglass is running low
On our shabby, rented land
Mother Nature's taking it
From our ungrateful hands
Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out
As he stepped into God's land?
The withering, the suffering
The forests turned to sand
Could our hope survive as our planet dies
And we tumble through the void
the ship we sail has lost it's way
The Earth has raised her voice
Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out
The seas comes flooding back to claim
The mistakes that we made
And mountains sit impassively
As our presence starts to fade
The hourglass is running low
On our shabby, rented land
Mother Nature's taking it
From our ungrateful hands
Mercury, Mercury Rising...
The race is run, the signs are there, our time is running out

Well written and very well performed. You have a Big Country vibe happening here I really enjoy.
