The First Time - iPad

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
As some of you know, I was given an iPad as a gift by Mark Holbrook and the other guys in the Texas Mafia, Jack Hemby, Terry Pearson and Andy Wigzell. (there may be others as well)

Well I decided that as soon as I was able I would post the first piece of music I put together on the iPad. I went about buying GarageBand for the iPad, and trying to figure out how to use it to make a bit of music. It took a while for me to get used to the GB interface, but once I did I started making some progress on the music.

Well here is what I came up with using the smart instruments and playing a bit of my own stuff into GB. It's short as in only 1:30 or so but it is what it is.

Guy's, this one is for you. I hope Y'all enjoy it as much as I am the iPad.

Enjoy

Ed

Thanks Jack
What I found most difficult, was keeping my fingers from touching other notes and things in the interface I didn't intend to touch. Seems like every time I would get a part just about done right, one of my fingers would go astray and screw up the works. Sensitive little bugger when it comes to that I'll tell ya. lol

The other thing I have yet to discover is how to put a proper ending on a piece of music while in GB 4 iPad. There's probably a way to do it, but I haven't found it yet. Otter than that, it's not bad at all once you get used to it. I can see it as a good tool for working on ideas and throwing rhythm tracks together to get a song going in the right direction, especially if you are out doing something else and have the iPad along with you. Got a minute, write a song kind of thing, ya know what I mean. lol

Thanks again for the kind words Jack.

Be well and be cool, my friend

lots of fun in a little tablet
and here it is, all that musical fun, exuding all over the rest of the world... A whole different way of making music, and you picked it up just like that! I've bought GB for our iPad too a couple months ago, and really loved all the unique and versatile instruments they stuck in there, some ingenious interaction-ideas... thank you for sharing your progress and results! See you soon in 2D, in MJCity3.

The little tablet that could !
Figuring out how it is that it does what it could is a trip until you get into it a bit and sort it all out. Once you do that, it's not hard at all. And it can make some nice music when you want it to.

Thank for the listen Drak and yes, we will see you soon in 2D.

How can I say no
to a request like that. For one, it's asking me to keep making music, and for another it's from my better half. (Always remember, If the Mama ain't happy, nobody's happy.)

Guess I'll be working on that for sure. lol

This is classic Sloparts in every way! It just goes to show Ed that I think if we gave you an old rusty can and some rocks you'd crank out a killer tune!

I like this lots!!! Very very happy and very very nicely done!!!!

Since this thing isn't a rusty old can,
it makes it a lot easier to do this stuff. Like I said up above, once you get the interface figured out it does get simpler to work with. Now if I could just figure out how to stop making all these typos when I type, I'd have it made.

Thanks for everything Mark, including the kind words on the song.

Me too on the phone
All mine does is make and receive phone calls. I've never felt the need for anything else on a phone, not that I haven't been tempted from time to time.

Now I can find things to do that I consider useful 0n the iPad, and music is one of those things. And it's very handy for checking out all the various web site I like to keep track of and getting my email when I'm not at the computer and have the iPad next to me on the couch, or out in a restaurant that has a hot spot in it.

Thanks for listening Chris, hope you enjoyed the music.

ain't technology great, Tim
It is kind of amazing what you can do with the iPad, or for that an iPhone or iPod Touch. The thing that really gets me is is the prices on some of these apps at the Apps Store. Ridiculously cheap considering the functionality they provide and the sheer fun of some of them.

Thanks for checking out the song Tim it is very much appreciated as are your cool comments.

For such an inexpensive program, ($4.99) GarageBand for iPad has a lot of possibilities for using it as a creative tool. Of course there are limitations, but given what's there it'll do some serious work too.

Thanks for listening Sigmund, and the kind words, I appreciate it.

Now, you've made me want one too...
Hi Ed. My friend, Philip18, has an iPad as well and the GB version is pretty cool. It has some interesting features that the full blown version doesn't. Nice tune with a well balanced mix. The touch pad interface must take a bit of getting used to for music making. Oh well, I'll probably have to bite the bullet soon too. Take care, Peter.

sloparts said 2287 days ago (July 16th, 2011)
Ah yes, the touch pad interface.
It takes some getting used to for sure. Just one errant finger or the palm of your hand, can wipe out a half hours worth of work in the blink of an eye.

You really need to know where all your fingers and hand parts are at all times to use it without pulling what little hair ya have left out by the roots. Another thing that could be better is labeling of the control and function buttons that are there, even if it was with pop up labels.

But for $4.99 I guess you have to draw the line somewhere on development costs and just put it out there. Personally I'd be willing to pay a few bucks more for a more well defined interface with better controls ut that's just me.

Thanks for listening and the kind words Peter, it is appreciated.

Well I'll tell ya Dave
GarageBand 08 it's not, that's for sure. It is useable but nothing like GB 08.

The hard part seems to be keeping an errant finger or other body part from touching something you did not want to touch at the wrong time. That can wipe out all the diligent work you just put in on a section of music in a heartbeat. But when you are careful about that kind of thing, you can use it to make music.

Thanks for listening and the kind words Dave, it is appreciated.

this thing has power you would not believe my friend. It can also be difficult to use some times until you get used to it. You really have to watch where you have your hands and fingers, or they cause all manner of thing to happen that you didn't intend to happen.

Thank you Rosalind
I'm glad you lie the way it turned out. Using GB on the iPd is whole different thing then using it on my iMac. The program is very different and somewhat limiting, but you can make music and build songs on it. I'm sure that the more I try to use it the easier it will get as I learn the intricacies of the program.

The story of my friend giving me this just amazes me and humbles me to no end. These are some very special people these friends of mine. But I've seen others in the MacJams community do things like this before, reaching out to help other MJ'ers in times of need. This is a lot more than just a place to share music and do collaborations, it is a real community of kindred souls sharing and giving of themselves to make a better place.

Thanks again for listening and the kind words Rosalind, it is appreciated.

Cool piece
GB on the iPad is deceptive. It looks gimmicky but underneath there's a sophisticated midi engine. I wrote and recorded "Blue Dress" on mine with only a few parts re-jigged on the Mac. Great for song sketching. I like the strolling blues feel of this, it's got swagger. Bravo.

I went and listened to Blue Dress
and it turned out great. It told me I still have much to learn about using GB on the iPad, but it will come with tie and effort.

Glad you like the tune's bluesy feel and "swagger". I'm working on another one right now, but not to happy with where it's headed just now. Gonna redo it and go to a whole different place with it.
Thanks for the comments and the encouragement I got out of Blue Dress.

Ah
I hear you even attempted the virtual string bend :)
A tricky feat I have yet to master on my pad...
It's amazing how these new tools help us create and develop ideas whoever we are. Creating original music on the fly has never been so easy.
Interesting times and I dig hearing how people push and adapt to the new kit at hand.
Nice one
sloparts said 2283 days ago (July 20th, 2011)
Thanks Ted
Yes I did try bending, and it works to a degree. The hard part on the iPad is to touch only the strings you want and to not let en errant finger or other body part touch something you didn't intend to touch. That has a tendency to screw up the works so you have to try it again, sometimes several times.

Glad you like how this came out my friend and that you left the kind words on it.

The guys took my breath away when they did this for us.

One of the things that Mark said was that now they wanted to hear some music from the iPad. Well I took that to mean I needed to get my rear in gear and produce some music. Well, I didn't want to disappoint Mark, so I got after it. It's a new way of doing thing that's for sure, but with time I will get it figured out. Glad you like my initial offering, I just hope I can do better on the next one.

I appreciate you stopping in to listen, and the very kind words you left for me about it. I think it turned out well, but now I've got to get busy and learn more about using the iPad version of GarageBand, so I can make even better music with it.

I also need to get some kind of interface that will allow me to bring in live instruments and audio. Otherwise I'll be stuck using just the resources in GB for iPad. While you can do a lot that way, you can't do any real music with vocals or guitars, or any of the other sound sources out in the real world.

Thanks again for listening Charlene
