Jerry emailed me a few weeks ago to let me know he had a few new songs and asked if I would be interested in working with him on them. I always love Jerry’s songs and was anxious to hear what he had. So one day after work I drove down to his house. When I entered his studio he played bits from each of his new tunes. There was something about this melody and the way the lyrics jumped off his handwritten page. I really wanted to work on Long Gone.
We spent that day putting together a quick acoustic demo with just my guitar and his vocal. The next day I recorded some proper acoustic guitar tracks. We weren’t sure what to do with the solo section. I picked up my Little Martin travel guitar and a slide. The sound seemed to fit. I thought at that point we might be done and we could just post it as a sparse acoustic piece.
But then the very next day Mike emailed me. He said he had a few free hours and wondered if I had anything for him to play on. Did I? I dropped him the file and within a day he delivered amazing drum and percussion tracks. Now the song was heading in a decidedly band direction. I asked Ryan to contribute a bass track. As always, he was rock solid and in the pocket. Should we leave it at that?
I sent a rough mix to Karen (magnatone) who thought keys and electric guitar could fill out the arrangement nicely. I asked John to contribute organ and accordion. Both of his tracks were outstanding. But the accordion just fit the bill so perfectly. I also asked Stan to contribute his signature electric guitar sound and a few harmonica solos. I believe this is Stan’s first MJ collaboration. If so, welcome my friend and thanks for contributing such wonderful tracks. Meanwhile Jerry reached out to his friend David who contributed a tasty electric guitar track. Maybe we can convince David to open an MJ account and really join in the fun!
Thanks to everybody who contributed on this song. Most of all thank you Jerry for writing such a great song and letting me work on it with you.

Lyrics
Long Gone
Words & Music by Jerry Quinn
Verse 1
Well I woke up this morning wishing I was dead,
Hoping that my baby could forget what I said,
Last night, last night,
I spoke my mind but I wasn’t too smart
I said some things and I broke her heart,
Last night, last night
Chorus
Now the woman is long gone,
Well the woman is long gone,
Yeah the woman is long gone,
And it serves me right
Verse 2
Well I can feel the fear building up inside,
I gotta jump back down to earth and try to find her
I’m checking all the places that I know she goes,
I’m asking all the people that I know she knows about her,
Chorus
They said your woman is long gone,
Yeah your woman is long gone,
She’s long gone,
And it serves you right,
Bridge
I wonder what she’s gonna do,
After all I put her through,
How I’m gonna make it through,
This lonely night,
I told her that I was her man,
Would always do the best I can
Now she’s making other plans,
This lonely night,
