Description
Here's my version (stage 6) of Imaginary Numbers - originally submitted by Jgurner to kick off the Pass It On Challenge. Many thanks to Joe for getting this together - I really enjoyed the experience.

The song had been through the hands of jgurner - SmokeyVW - davisamerica - MarkHolbrook - VicDiesel before it came to me. I got Vic's excellent version and the tracks he added or retained from what he had received earlier to create it. I never heard any other version including Joe's original. BTW - my version then went o Aemyn.

I kept Vic's recorder parts and some other bits from his mix (bass and guitar primarily) - choosing to completely redo the drum track. Of course I also kept Joe's magnificent vocals - though like everything else - they underwent some changes.
I then added at least four additional synth tracks - including orchestral instruments - and four or five drum tracks. Finally I mixed in a recording of the Conet Numbers Project (short wave radio recordings from the 50's - courtesy of Archive.org) to go with the theme.

I hope you enjoy the various mixes - and that this mix has done justice to Joe's excellent song.

As soon as I post - I'm off to listen to the others myself.

scanner
you built a dreamlike 'chill' feeling here - those SWR voice numbers somehow made me think we're crashing somewhere at 4am and somebody left the police band scanner running

thanks

i'll revisit after all the songs are up - i want to listen to them all in order

Hey Bill - this was a cool project
wasn't it? You had the challenging number 2 position and set a great precedent for the subsequent versions. I love the Conet tapes - but didn't think about them until the last minute. Joseph's vocal was a trip to work with.

Thanks for the guitar lines
I that got to derange here - they really are excellent and helped me find my groove. We should all do this more often.

Holy Re-Mix Batman!
You kept me guessing from the get-go where this was going. And it just went everywhere and did it in such a cool way. I really like the way it's rhythmically unsettled from the start. And it just builds from there. Just a trip to listen to.

This has definitely been fun listening to all the different versions. Glad you played along!

Trip - that's the word
you made it all possible Joe with those great lyrics and excellent delivery. I just decided to space out my version and let it build on the cool stuff I had to work with. I used one of Vic's tracks as a drone source - using Spectral dronemaker - that was cool.

Much more trippy.
So far, the transitions changed the feel of the entire song but all have highlighted the vocal. Cool beans, bud. Thanks.

Joe's vocal is the soul of the song
and he was wise to make it so. Gave the rest of us more liberty with everything else. He's a real smarty pants.

Remix
Really cool how you've taken it from a straight rock to a more contemporary electronic vibe.

But isn't that vocal off by a considerable fraction of a beat? I really can't interpret it as either on the beat or syncopated.

Interesting - it never occurred to me
that the vocal was off. I'll have to see what happens when I slip it around. I hear a relaxed phrasing - but I could be way off.

This has the feeling of a waking dream. The vocals are off the groove, but it adds to the effect.

After Vic's comment I went back and looked at my project
I didn't notice being off the beat - and I'm glad it adds to the vibe for you. I guess that's why I ran with it - it just felt good. I built a drum track with the accent on 2 and 4 and I guess I slipped the vocals back to fall in with that groove - however they are ahead by a 1/16th. Happy accident? Maybe - this was done in one sitting when I got the chance - to keep the project moving along.

I just realised
somrething,,,,,this project is potentially fraught with the danger of seriously pissing people off......"You took what out....you took my thigy doobry firkin contibrution and trashed it .....you bas***do " and so forth......so ,it,s check all egos at the hat stand on entry then ! Again I am baffled, bewildered and bemused.......but enough about me !! This is again a complete departure from the previous entries/incarnations and again the vocals have altered ....I tell you this is messing with me noddle.....brillopads (a Jarvoid Benchmark).

I tried to set up a shamanistic feel in the beginning with a tribal beat before breaking into a more standard track that enters with the bass.

This is a process...
This is not a pipe... but the image reminds me of Paul Magritte, and this evolution reminds me of some such sort of painting. Neat layers here. Love the background synths and background countdown...kind of drives the dark-carnival metronome along.
