Description
there are certain things i need to be happy. i guess a zen master would take issue with that statement, but who wants to be a zen master? so i need my wife, my kid, my dog, and my horses. anyone of those people/animals goes missing from the picture and i'm not right. to me they're all part of the balance of my life. each one is like the other. and of course nothing like the other. it's difficult to explain, i guess only people who work on a daily basis with animals would get it. i don't see the humans in my life as any different from the animals. but of course i do. i mean i don't anthropomorphize the animals. we're all different KINDS of animals, but we're all animals anyway, we all want the same things out of life. we're the same in that most basic way, which makes us a lot of the same. and then again we're nothing alike. This tune started out as a guy clark little contemplative acoustic song but then i started hearing a lot of neil young, the way he can take a country tune and crank it into an epic conversation about not just the story of the song but the genesis of the story, i mean all the things that made the story possible. And then from there the song just went where my southern rock/country tunes always go, into guitarland and then back, i guess i see southern music and maybe the south itself as pushing out into unknown territory and then retreating, always that retreat. it seems to define the genre. anyway there you have it.

Lyrics
women and horses
children and dogs
one's just like the other
except when they aint at all

had a bitch named sally
she'd hunt all day long
then she'd sleep by the fire
her legs still moving her along
when there weren't nobody else
to give me some relief
i'd sit in there with her
and me and her we'd have some peace

women and horses
children and dogs
ones just like the other
except when they aint at all

had a horse named ranger
a rank cowboying stud
i'd clean him up on a friday
just to watch him roll in the mud
he could swell your pride
he could break your heart
make you feel ten feet tall
then like you lost a fight in a parking lot

chorus

i've seen some good ones come
i've seen some bad ones go
they mostly look good coming
but soon enough you know

how do you do it
The phrasing in the lyrics is what moves this for me, the tambourine thats slightly behind my left ear is hypnotizing me, I hope I spelled that right, Some crazy echo in the lead its a trip when it comes back in and ends Beautiful man!

phrasing
I can't write a tune without tambourine. Its the preschooler in me. And I can't write a solo without phaser - that's the Indie rock boy in me. Glad you liked it man, I'm really enjoying your new tune.

Animals
Yes we are. And dogs are such a nice guys.
Love the guitar solo. The vibe reminds me in some wicked way to everlast. One little detail: I'm not sure about the strings, was expecting a hammond doing the same, but that may be too obvious. And your voice sounds amazing.

wicked ways
I don't hear ever last - but I wouldn't mind if I did. Glad you liked the solo, I thought it was good and angsty. I didn't know about the strings either, I was going for that big led zep sweaty puffy shirt drama thing. But I think I like them. Thanks for the listen man.

thanks karen
I knew you'd get the strings! I was thinking while putting everything together of those huge made for the Grammys moments with the smoke and the philharmonic just sawing away furiously while some skinny guitar god achieves ectasy on stage. After all, rock and roll without the cheese is just well disappointing. Even Guy Clark would agree.

authentic
Thanks man, that's what I'm always trying to do, that's the baseline - is it authentic. I'm always jealous of the guy clark's, buddy millers, the Neil young's - no matter the style or subject, its honest and feels like it should go straight to the national archives. So cool comment, thanks.

mournful lilt
that's true, because under it all is the knowledge that any simile you can come up with to explain your life and your loved ones is just a trick to make you think that you understand what you know that you will never understand.

glad you liked it vic, thanks. all my solos are breaks and all my breaks are solos. well, not really. but all my solos are breaks - i wouldn't say they amount to 'solo' just yet.

i like the anthem concept. that's what i was thinking about, those slow old southern anthems that dripped with all the gothic tangle that is the south. and there IS a good ol boy in all of us :)

Women and Horses (Children and Dogs)
"he could swell your pride
he could break your heart
make you feel ten feet tall
then like you lost a fight in a parking lot"

That could just as easily apply to a child as much as the horse. But I guess that was your point. Darn good songwriting!

Like you said ...
"everyone got a dog song in 'em". I gotta agree, it's the living things around us that make our lives what they are. Whether it's family or friends, horses or dogs it all makes for the true life experience. When I get home from vacation and my dogs are still in kennels, the house don't feel right til they are back.
Love the Neil Young distorted guitar solo in this man, really sets against the rest effectively. Great lyrics, lovely drawl delivery. Tempie classic.

There is nothing like watching a dog dream.

Touching, poetic and tender. A real dreamy love song to all that make life truly worth the effort.

At 2:11 when it gets dirty IMHO the drums should really kick in volume-wise, as well as the guitar. Seems a little thin sonically at that break. Gets gutsier at 3:05 with the crazy distorted guitars and then packs it back in. Nice.

you're right, it seems like a such a perfect metaphor for the human condition. I agree about the thin sound, i'm working on it now...thanks for the close listen man.

... and watermelon wine
Your description reads like you were wicked stoned. Which fits the tune PERFECTLY. This song is so laid back. The use of strings is perfect and how you have them arranged is unique for the song. It feels like you were conscious of how the melody/progression lent itself to standard country and you made sure it was still just a little left of that. Many would be tempted to have the 16 minute Skynyrd solo/tone. Great job staying true to the vision.

Southern Rock
It does remind me of Neil Young too. I like the intimate vocal delivery and the gentleness beckons me in.
The juxtaposition of the anarchic guitar break lifts this up into something else.

Women and Horses (Children and Dogs)
I did not see that guitar solo break coming :-) but it works brilliantly. As if you're putting your own unique mark on a traditional southern rock ballad. Lyrically you are in the zone again. I love the phrase "like you lost a fight in a parking lot". Ouch, been there and it hurts..emotionally. The strings have been commented on, but my two cents is they work well. I may vote for a thicker string sound but the lines themselves add a lot. Nicely done

Applause
Just got back from an epic road trip so i'm late to the party.
Great song, guitars and vox sound fantastic as always. The delay on the vocal, and the nifty guitar effects, i enjoyed a lot.
i am 75 percent of the way to the titular quadrafecta, unfortunately i am allergic to horses but they are very lovable creatures.
Thanks for another top tune.

excellent
great title/subject. the animals and kids in my life drive me nuts, but as soon as they're not underfoot I feel like somethings off. damn them all for getting under my skin. whenever I feel the frustration mounting, I try to remember that I chose this.

this is a very cool track. you definitely have a classic rock streak running through this, but also some serious 90's indie guitar rock damage. that solo is just right. I feel like I'm watching the opening band at a Royal Trux show. "Who are these guys? Wonder if they have a single." i'm going to go grab a beer, but I'll stop by the merch table on the way back.
