Description

Back in April 2010 a few of us macjammers went to watch a very enjoyable and entertaining play that Julian Sims had written. In the bar before the play started we were chatting and, I think it was Dick Langford who suggested that maybe we should all try and write a song for our own funeral! I found this a very interesting concept and I have always said that I would like 'No Dancing Please' on my gravestone. That was the start of this.

I wrote this song and my original version can be found here:

I then, once again, asked my very good friend Christopher Chaplin if he would like to bring his magic to it. He thankfully agreed and the result is below. I had to wait a long time because Christopher was very busy during this period. He had been asked by BBC Radio 3's Late Junction Show to participate in a collaboration with the renowned composer Hans-Joachim Roedelius. Roedelius has collaborated with many of the greats over the years (including Brian Eno). If anyone would like to hear the resulting 20 minute interview with Christopher and the music, I have a copy recorded. Send me a PM with your email address and I will send you a link to download.

i heard len's original version of this before it went to chris. the original has len's piano intro which i prefer....especially the sondheim sound he manages to create with the "and it seems just like a dream"....i really loved that bit and i was disappointed to hear it lost.

len's voice is deep and growly and the current 'free' orchestration makes it difficult to tie in his vocal to the melody. this isn't a problem in the original version. i would have brought chris in a bit later once the vocal melody had been established.

Thank you for the great plug, and promotion in your blurb... really you shouldn't have... I mean really... *whispers in Len's ear* - 'attaboy !'

Seriously Len, your vocals on this track are so great: the delivery, the drama, the story that's being told, etc.... it kept reminding me of a piece by Elgar called: "the Dream of Gerontius" which is one of the great English oratorios. I know I was influence by it, and did try to hint at the style a bit.

My apologies to Julian, and to you Len for not keeping the original piano track which was indeed very good, and very like Sondheim. I think I also selfishly wanted to see if I could combine orchestral and electronic sounds in your piece, and that ended up taking over, and leading me astray. So I'm glad you posted a link to the original which can be heard.

It was a real pleasure working on our fourth collab.

I listened to the Elgar piece - very, very powerful. Something I would never have heard without knowing you, just one of the things I am grateful for.

You really, really do not have anything to apologise for, I asked you to do whatever you fancied doing with this. When you asked me if I minded you dropping the piano I said that I trusted you totally to come up with something great, and you did with my full agreement. I absolutely love the result.

I struggled to find a picture, then saw this and it just seemed to fit in a curious way.

Well 'tis my ambition to live forever - so far so good, as Jerry Lee Lewis once said -'don't put no headstone on my grave, I want a monument' To the music - This is a very unusual piece of music and I had to listen to it several times to appreciate it's full and wide scope. There are many dark and intriguing corners but they all fit together perfectly. Excellent work, I enjoyed it very much.

I think that any of us who survive you should club together for an orchestra to give you a proper send-off and play this as it should be played.
The orchestration is superb, and the conception is mind-fardlingly good - a hatful of ideas, performed with brutal gusto.
Lyrically svelt - the last line is perfect.

You don't start small
or finish there either. Len I always know that whatever you take on is going to be big, original and tremendously creative and surprising. This is in the same vein - I want to keep listening to hear where it will go. It was a most engaging ride.

This one seems to have slipped under my radar! Wow - very dramatic. Love that heavy build up at the beginning. All your stuff has a very bertold brecht kind of feel to it. Like being lost in a pleasurable nightmare. Fantastic production Len, getting all these discordant sounds to sit in their own space must have been quite a challenge. Exceptional stuff.
