cool bass sound sort of reminded me of Les Claypool of
Primus. Pretty creative can't want to hear what else you
come up with.
btw can you post the lyrics?

Yeah, definitely some Claypool influence, not that it was a conscious effort.
The bass track was just me through-composing to the drums, just seeing
what would work and what wouldn't. I ended up just using it all, unedited. I
thought of redoing the bass line, but then how do you redo it without making
it sound rehearsed? Rehearsed? Yuk! [ Reply to This ]
This was fun &mdash 02/06/05 - 01:50:42 PM
My only recommendation would be make the vocals edits
less clippy, but I'm pretty sure you did that on purpose. [ Reply to This ]
This was fun &mdash 02/06/05 - 03:39:39 PM
It was fun. (Thanks). I love the contrast--the delicate, precise vocals versus
the bull-in-a-china-shop bass. Clippy was indeed what I wanted (good call).
I also love dancing to this tune. It's the Tony Mason AMG demo loops that
just make me move. Think "White James Brown." I guess that would simply be
"James White." But not Barry White. [ Reply to This ]
funky &mdash 02/06/05 - 02:14:38 PM
Like funky mumbling. At first I didn't like the sound clips too much; they seemed too out of place, but as it progressed they started to come together into a groove and I started to dig it. I was hoping that they would continue to build and rhythmically come together more. Never quite got there. Overall, I really like this. I think you could take it further. [ Reply to This ]

Cool, thanks for the encouragement. I do intend to take it further. Its good
to know what people think of it so far. [ Reply to This ]

well, i'm biased, but i likes it! it does its own thing, which
is always tops in my book. it never occurred to me that
you were actually playing the bass-i thot you were just
mixing.. so hey, i mistook you for a professional. ;)
this is already a solidly smoooth grooove, looking forward
to hearing what else you do with it

seeing that picture of your daughter starts to bring
to mind different imagery for this tune. I imagine a
father (the bassline) trying to talk some sense into
his child, but all the child wants to do is bing and
bong around, not listening to A WORD THE FATHER
IS SAYING and not take him seriously. But wait, you
can't really lecture a toddler anyway...I mean, how
much do they really absorb? All they probably hear
is "blah blah blah blah". Hey...it looks like pgreen is
saying similar things that _nder and I did earlier
about this one...building it rhythmically would be
cool...just carve out some time, lock the kids (and
wife) in the closet and get this thing done! No rush,
though, really... we want it to be good. Put some
food in the closet with them....and a TV. Maybe
that'll keep 'em quiet. [ Reply to This ]
almost forgot &mdash 02/10/05 - 09:25:28 PM
to add that you have got a great bass sound there... I dug it. I like the
idea of letting it flow and not "rehearsing"...! Are you rebelling against
your music teacher ways? Or do you teach that way? I think I would
want you as my music teacher. [ Reply to This ]
Scruffy &mdash 02/10/05 - 09:16:39 PM
Hey, this reminds me a lot of a British jazz/funk/sample
DJ called Mr. Scruff, or something else off the Ninja Tunes
record label that he`s on.
Its very cool, well produced. I pretty much like how you`ve
cut up the vocal samples, they sound just a touch too
quiet in places in the first half - but only a touch if at all.
And I really like that screwy bass line.
I`d definitely listen to this again.
I just started frequenting this site again after a 6 month
or so gap. I think the quality has gone way up.

There. I'm a guitar player and I said it. I have a pal who is a good enough bass player that he got a contract endorsing basses for a manufacturer (he's Chris Clemente, don't know who the manufacturer is). He had, maybe still has, a jazz/prog rock band called Kick the Cat. That's what opened my eyes to what role a bass can actually play in a musical composition. I don't have the sensibility to think like a bass player. I wish I did.
My point? We need more real bass! As omnipresent as bass is in music you're something of a novelty here as an actual bass player. Keep pounding those strings! [ Reply to This ]

Thanks for the props. I wouldn't call what I'm doing on this cut "quality bass
playing". The rhythms I was going for just didn't sync up in places, etc. But
maybe that is the attraction for me: so many perfect bass loops/midi basses
in use out there that this is my statement "Real Human Bass Playing Kicks
Ass."
p.s. Now I am really curious about which company your bass playing pal
endorses. Find out and lemme know! [ Reply to This ]

I did a search and your pal is a Warwick guy. Warwick basses rock. Love em
to pieces. He even has a cool group of pages on the warwick website for bass
lessons. Here is the link:

Hopping with hip bongs &mdash 02/11/05 - 12:02:40 PM
This is so cool. Starting with the great photo, the great
bass amp and totally hip out playing; the bing bong thing
hopping all over the field gives a new meaning to hip hop,
or perhaps returns it to its original meaning (one the girl
in the photo might know better). Such fun coming from
such an unlikely concept. Cut it up, pooey! [ Reply to This ]
kids dancing &mdash 02/16/05 - 11:27:28 AM
I really like the contrast between the heavy bass and the
light, pinging binging bonging songing.
This tune would be perfect for one of those kids' TV
shows, a la Sesame Street -- they could get up and dance
and sing "bing" or "bong" when those words popped up on
the screen. The song could be greatly expanded to include
words that RHYME with bing and bong. But then it might
be too long. Would that be wrong? [ Reply to This ]

oh no, that would not be inappropriate. I can see the video right now. That

understands that music is multidemnsional. Thanks! [ Reply to This ]
