Description:
I told a friend of mine that I would write her a lullaby, and this is the result.

There are no loops used at all. I played all the musical instruments on my keyboard. I'm quite proud of this fact because I don't actually play the keyboard. And yet, it sounded like a song to me. In my book, that's a success! Here's wishing a good night's sleep to each and every one of you.

Lyrics:
Look, my darling, night has come at last
Darkness fills your room
In its sweet cocoon
Sleep, my darling, eyes are closing fast
Breathing slow
Dreams aglow

Magic whispers calm you now
Gentle fingers soothe your brow
Worries Mom will not allow

Sleep, my baby, curl your tiny hands
Sleep, my baby, dream of fairy lands

Magic whispers calm you now
Gentle fingers soothe your brow
Worries Mom will not allow
Sleep...

Sleep, my baby, night has come at last
Sleep, my baby, day has finally passed
Close your eyes
And when you rise
The night will dream of you

Nice one &mdash 02/07/05 - 03:54:38 AM
You should indeed be proud of yourself for doing
your own keyboard work. I wouldn't have guessed
you weren't a keyboard player. Nicely put together.

Thank you, Rebsie, that made me feel great. It's not fancy or complex, but
when I finished the musical bed it actually sounded like a song to me, and
that was a thrill.

Holy crap! &mdash 02/07/05 - 09:39:14 PM
No loops?!?? Wow, this opens doors for you... You
go, girl...! I need to get mine hooked up! Anyway,
this tune was nice. The music was like a playful
tiptoe. The only thing I felt this one needed was
some warm bass to contrast with the high plucked
strings. It was still nice without it, just a little on the
cool side. I'm excited to see where you go from here
with the new keyboard..>!

Thank you, Stun! I did use bass and cello throughout -- perhaps they weren't
strong enough? The instruments used were bass, cello, viola, 1st and 2nd
violin and a glockenspiel. I'm wondering if the violin and viola stabs were just
too strong for the bass and cello. I'm actually trying to teach myself about
orchestration by studying the loops in jampack 4. Probably not the best way
to learn, but it's given me a place to start. (My musical education is somewhat
spare -- limited to saxophone in the school band -- a loooong time ago).

sweet dreams &mdash 02/12/05 - 08:41:22 AM
i like the orchestra concept for this piece, although maybe there is too much pizz violins with not enough longer higher strings? but very sweet, with nice rhythm to the rhymes, almoist like a limmerick.

Thank you, Suzanne. This was sort of my first baby step into the land of "no
loops", and I have much to learn. Perhaps I chose a lullaby for that foray
because infants aren't very particular. Ha!

nice performance &mdash 02/16/05 - 11:01:54 AM
Joanna, you did very well playing the keyboards "live"!
Very expressive and with good nuance and rhythm. This
success should give you the confidence to continue to
develop your keyboard skills -- just keep doing it and
you'll be amazed how quickly you'll improve.

A bit more variety in the orchestration (as already
mentioned) would be a good idea for this song, but not
TOO thick or complicated a texture, since this is a simple
lullaby. Adding a flowing string line to contrast with the
pizzicato line would be enough.

Good job!

Thank you, Cameron! I'll keep trying to figure out how to play the keyboard, I
promise. From the comments here, for example, I've learned that the flowing
bassline wasn't enough to counterpoint the high strings. See? I'm learning
already!

It's the ending &mdash 10/19/05 - 04:13:30 PM
I agree with all the previous comments and praise. Nice job. But it's the last line that really gets me. "And when you rise the night will dream of you." It hits below the head, but strikes the heart.
