Description
It has been far too long without me dancing to the music... so I found this piece of a piece of music, which has languished since September 2009, and multiplied its humble beginnings by eight. It is now beginning to waltz into the spotlight with some structure and possibly some appeal. I have not polished this up yet. It has minimal EQ, only a first pass at instrument choices, and a simple structure, and abrupt ending. However, it seems to be a nice start. However that said, all suggestions for improvement (or disposal) are welcome.

Very nice piece Eduard. The melody is beautiful. But what really impressed me is the bass line. It was a melody all on its own!

melodies abound
I love melody everywhere, and I was spending time on the bass line here. It is quite a privilege to be complimented on it by you, sir bass. I shall endeavor to keep that prominent. 0x0

I don't know midi very well, so I can't really comment on a lot of what you do, however I do dig the melody and bass line. I do wish that you would export some of your midi files to a different program, like when we did the TAL noisemaker challenge, as some instruments in this midi package sound strange to me, they sound like all the songs on my old RPG video games, if that makes any sense. But the song is good, waltzes always have a nice dreamy quality to them and the bass-line is just funky enough to modernize it.

midi-ocre sounds
yes, I agree with you... the synthesizers I chose hastily here, and they sound a little dry and "plastic." Also, there's not a lot of dynamics, and sculpting of notes, so it sounds quite mechanical, which is what those old RPG games sounded like too, so I know exactly what you mean. And the good news is that I intend to fix that in version two, if I can get some time to revisit this. Thank you Brian for the feedback and suggestions on where to focus. It is very helpful. 0x0

so little time to shift bits
Thank you Yves, it is good to know the structure of this piece sounds fairly mature to you. It means I am close. A good thing, since I still have little time for this joy, but I am using the time when I can. Thank you for taking precious time to listen and comment on this, it is always appreciated. 0x0

Very nice
does make me think a little of "Waltz in Black" by the Stranglers.. which I love: perhaps some of the instrument choices and 3/4 time does that. So how did the arithmetic shift 3 bits work/is applied? 1, 8, 128 .. very pleasing melody... liked the interplay at 0:46-0:55 in particular, that re-appeared.

impromptu tangential ephemeral music titles
I must seek out this Waltz in Black, an intriguing new tangent, thank you. I had fun writing that little counter-melody, so happy you picked up on it. As for the title, I often come up with unusual place-holder names while working on these sketches. It was originally named roku-hachi, which I am too embarrassed to transliterate. However, when it was time to post this, I had to choose a different name, and my mind saw the 6/8 time signature (so it is not technically a waltz at all, except that it is a very SLOW 6/8), and the 8 stuck in my head, and my machine language kicked in and decided that the way to get to 8 was to load 1 into the CPU register, and execute an "ASL 3" instruction on it to get to 8 (2-4-8.) I was trying to be as analytically geeky as possible with this romantically flowing music. There, the mundane secret is out, regarding my naming strategies. Of course, the final version shall be named something more apropos. 0x0

Good rule to live my life by
simple, charming and doesn't outstay its welcome. Thank you for the nod of encouragement. I intend to work on simplifying some of the parts, embellishing the countermelodies and bass a bit, and choosing more pleasing and interesting synth voices, perhaps handing the melody off more, here and there. But other than slightly extending the coda, I will leave it short and sweet. 0x0

Quaint
This is a bit of mystique that requires more attention in the sound department. As you stated it's in the beginning stages, so I understand that my statement might be premature. Crafting the sounds to be used in this piece is a big thing for me (right now) like casting the actors for a big stage performance. With the right sounds and stage setting yields potential for greatness :)

This little bit can be a bigger byte later on-haha!

listening attentively to Patty
Ah, but it is the premature release of this 'sketch' in the hopes of receiving premature critiques in the sound department that I wished for. It does sometimes feel like casting about for a great stage performance. And with so little time and talent, sometimes I feel I must put on a one-man puppet show. However, your encouragement that the foundation is there does help me a great deal, so thank you for listening and commenting. I feel this could go either of two ways... off in the Wendy Carlos wildly Moog-direction, or re-orchestrated for chamber orchestra. Perhaps I will try both, and see which sound-stage deserves an encore. 0x0

Arithmetic
Eduard, I really enjoyed this. Electronica's not usually my thing but this has all sorts of little bits and twists that keep you thinking. I had to work hard not to analyse as I listened and just take it in but it brought me back for a second listen. I'm not fit to offer any musical critique, other than encourage you to keep at it. chisels and sandpaper
The major chiseling work of creating the structure and melody ideas is mostly complete. However, I wished to ask for feedback on this rough draft, to decide if I needed to chisel some more, or if it is time to get out the sandpaper and do detail work... or get out the dynamite and start over :-)

Thank you for suggesting that it is about time to get out the sandpaper. I will cut a few more rough edges, and then start polishing this with better instruments and frills and dynamics here and there. 0x0

From Wikipedia
Faux Elfman - Little is known about Faux, Danny's twin brother. Some say he was raised by a couple of wolves. Others say he is simply a rag-doll that Danny sewed together from discarded fly-paper and oleander flowers, and kept under his bed to tell stories to at night. To this day, Danny will not speak of him, but leaves hints that every song he writes actually is ghost-written by Faux. Perhaps we shall never know. Me, I am sworn to secrecy by my mother Rhea.

Thank you for listening, and the reference to D. E. is very flattering. When may we hear some of your music? 0x0

Indeed, sweet melodies here! My mind wanders to the Monkey Island games when I hear this. Perhaps it's because of the MIDI-chunkiness, but I wonder how this would sound more caribbean style. :)

distant monkey island
I remember recently finding the ancient monkey island floppy disks in the garage (my ex-wife played those games, and I am not sure why I wound up with the disks.) I do not remember the music, but I do know the MIDI-game-sound, and hope to work on the rhythm and dynamics next, to remove the chunky rough edges you hear, as they bother me too. I hope to delight and surprise you with the final version of this... as you delight me with your music. 0x0

Like Clockwork
By the left bit, quick Shift!

This has a lovely unhurried quality which balances moving forward with taking the right amount of time for each note. I don't feel in the least that the ending is abrupt - it arrives (to paraphrase Gandalf) precisely when it means to. I like the double notes in the bass - there is a grounding quality as they bounce into place. There is enough variety in the various instruments that they all hold their own place in the mix. You could choose to uprgade them yet there is a consistency to their sound here that within the overall context hangs together well and so I didn't feel the need to wish for something different. Sometimes quick choices can be inspired choices too. That said, I know if you choose to work on this further it will be new and interesting as well. There is an Elmanesque vox at 0:49 that is kind of a cool reference for a few moments (even if not intended).

Nice work Eduard. Thanks for the dload!
Doug

tempo fidgets...
I played often with the tempo before settling on the current pace. It was originally slower, and sounded like a dirge... perhaps why I cast it aside long ago. Too fast and it skitters frenetically. This tempo seems to be about right, and your reassurance is very helpful here.

The ending was a first pass to drive home the tonic. Perhaps it is good enough then, without becoming pompous.

The "ElectroAngelVox" at :49 is my own patch, which I've used in some other pieces, a soft melding between a synth vox and a calliope.

I hope to find some time to work on this more soon. Your insight, thoughts and encouragement are greatly appreciated, thank you. 0x0

Very ic42
This piece has the trademark of ic42 aka Harmony Assistant aka music box and there is nothing wrong with that. In the right mood it's as good as anything, and that bass line is to die for. With that said I am already curious where you will take it in the next iteration. I could hear a bit more reverb perhaps (or that's just my lousy listening equipment at this time).

Thanks and take care,
Henke

lifeless MIDI
Henrik, I am very happy to know that despite this early "mechanical-sounding" recording (with uninspired drums) you still hear promise in it. So I shall promise you that I will come back with a much improved version soon. I have been too busy to create music lately, and it has been discouraging. However, I am able to set aside little bits of time for my bytes of music now, soon I will have a whole word. :-) Thank you for listening and offering your thoughts, they help guide me. 0x0

cool
love when the track drops to just bass and the lead synth. great melody, I can picture this in the yellow submarine or in an alternate version of For the Benefit of Mr. Kite. I think the only thing I would change is maybe try a more 70's sounding Moog tone for the lead line in a couple of parts (like maybe bring it in after the first section that drops out). although that could potentially push it too far into Beatles territory. great track.

I remember Mr. Kite... but hadn't even thought of Beatles... that is quite a flattering comparison. I wasn't completely satisfied with the different synth sounds, but they were getting close enough to post for feedback. I wanted to hand the melody off to different voices here and there, but your ideas here are worth pursuing too. Thank you for listening and suggesting directions to try, Michael. 0x0

Rewarding
There is a simple and complex duality going on here which provides a lot of delight for the listener. I think the sound choices work and it seems that there is only some minimal eq that needs to be done. Maybe some cool swirly effects judiciously used could provide some additional ear candy without destroying what is already happening. Perhaps some kind of moody bridge too, contrasting the playful nature of the main melody. I do like the sort of carnival/mysterious mood overall that is created.

just what i needed to hear
I love the syncopation. Excellent sound choices, especially the breathy choir. An unhurried, flowing piece. I really don't think it needs any improvement. If you wanted to lengthen it, maybe a modulation into a fugue-type section and then back again. i like this a lot.

Hmm....
Interesting... viscous, dark sort of sentiment... If you're taking suggestions, I'd perhaps go for something a little less square-wave for the bass, especially because there's not a lot of movement in the bass line. Try a standup, or fretless patch, see where that lands you... :) Cool ideas though!!

viscous... descriptive
perhaps this is treacle music. dark sticky sweet. yes, suggestions are welcomed and encouraged, thank you. I have been adding a little more development in the bass line, and will also give it more character. I have just finished an experimental orchestral version of this, and the static bass stands out even more as... well... needing more work. Of course Kassia pushed my fugue-button up there, and now I have this torn apart and am attempting a fugue bridge section... perhaps in several months I will have something working :-) However, it is great fun, and keeps me out of the pool hall. 0x0
