Sweetly Sings The Donkey

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I find myself completely engrossed in my day gig, planning lessons, attending trainings, and just trying to be the best 1st grade teacher I can be. Each fall I get a chance to revisit the series of children’s songs I record in the summer of 2009. Back then I was just learning how to use GarageBand. I’ve learned a thing or two since then and have set about remixing those songs. The artwork is from a PowerPoint presentation I project on the whiteboard so the students can read along while they sing along.

I found this little tune in a book of children’s songs I have. It was originally a round (“Row, Row, Row Your Boat” type of thing). At first I thought the absence of a formal chord structure would limit what I could do with the arrangement. I quickly came to realize the absence of a set chord progression gave me the freedom to do basically whatever I wanted. So I made sure to have some fun.

As for the reading content, this is a great one to use while teaching developing readers about the long e sound. Sweetly, donkey, feed, he’ll, and the repeated hee-haw help children recognize the long e sound when they hear it and see it when they encounter it in new words.

As always, thanks for taking the time to listen.

Hee-haw
This is terrific, Andrew! The sound of the driving guitar, the lead line, the vocal harmony all go to make a great package that I've not doubt kids would love. The repetition of the sounds means it would get the message into their long-term memory without them even realising it! Can I be in your class?

Thanks Philip!
I'm glad you enjoyed the musical end of this. But what I'm really flattered by is your recognition of the educational value.

I was just saying
Andrew made a song about me :-) But I don't start that early.

Very nice song ! What particularly captured me is the bass line, I loved it. Very cool guitars too, very nicely blended together. And I love the vocals and harmonies too.

I think it is nothing new, saying that the production quality is great !

Lovely work and pro approach as usual Andrew, thank you.

I was rather pleased with the bass. So I really appreciate the comment regarding it. Palm muted with a pick. I liked it so much I realized I could drop the guitars right out of the verse.

Pi$$ed off A$$
I'd hee-haw if you didn't feed me either....LOL

The production values of this, particularly the choruses with the harmonies are stupendous! Fun, boppy and infectious!

When it started, I wasn't expecting to like it...but I do!

Sweetly sings
Really enjoyed this, as did my daughter. But Florida's a fair old way to send her to school sadly. Don't suppose you've got any English cousins or anything?
Music wise, as always I appreciate a good guitar tone and this doesn't disappoint and at the risk of repeating Yves, really dig that bass! I could even imagine you adding a little aside break of "hey mickey you're so fine" in the middle if you fancied mixing it up during a lesson!

I would love to teach abroad and spend a year in England! But it gets so damned cold in the winter. I'm compiling the whole collection of songs and accompanying slides into a single folder. There are about 30. I've currently remixed 19 of them. When I get done in a couple weeks I plan to make the whole thing available in a DropBox. I'll send you an invite. Then you could do the lessons with your daughter.

As always, thanks so much for the support!

Hee-haw!!
Hee-haw move over Raffi. Andrew , I think you should put out a children's album. I believe this would be commercially successful. I can see you doing concerts with hundreds of screaming children (with their parents also enjoying) and you on stage with your rockin' band ... need a guitar player?
This is fabulous. The mix is great as always and your vocals and harmonies are fantastic! And the playing ... good rockin' guitar and driving bass ... just a real fun rockin' tune.
Those 1st graders are pretty lucky.

Although any thoughts of trying to market and sell this stuff (let alone tour) makes me weary! My plan is to make all of these available to teachers and parents via a free download. If people see value in it and it helps kids learn to read that's reward enough.

Sweetly sings the donkey
Delighted to see (and hear) some music for children, the secret is that's how I've made my living singing to children but that a long story.
I love what you did with this song. I hate it when someone tries to make something for children by dumming the music down, pity your not closer. I have also developed the sing and read concept. more power to you.
