Lyrics
It was down at Old Joe's Barroom
On the corner by the square
The usual crowd was drinking
Yes the usual crowd was there

On my left stood old Joe McKinney
His eyes were bloodshot red
And he turned to the crowd around him
These were the very words he said

I went down to the St. James Infirmary
To see my baby there
She was laid out on a cold white table
So cold, so pale, so fair

Let her go, let her go, god bless her
Wherever she maybe
She can search this whole wide world over
She'll never find a man better than me

you hoped to bring something original..i think u did better than that you brought some authenticity to a great blues track .. dug this Tom. Your vocals sold it for me.

Well done Tom! Solid performance and well recorded. I liked how you quoted the vocal melody during the guitar solo.

St. james
Thanks Andrew. The Zoom seems to do a good job recording my kind of impromptu live sessions and my voice comes across clear and strong. Something I have had trouble with sometimes with my iMac and various microphones. My lead playing almost always finds at least part of the melody in it. At least on songs that have a nice melody.

Traditional blues
One of the great things about these songs is the variety of interpretations they can sustain. Yours keeps it simple, with just you and a couple of guitars, and is all the better for that- you allow the song to speak to the listener. Nice clean guitar lines, too. Well done!

Keep It Simple
Some nice words there Phillip. Every once in a while I go for a full production but I think my voice actually works better with simple acoustic guitar. Trying to restrain myself on the guitar and not play so many notes but it is hard not to just let it rip.

I think you're right: EVERYBODY of note did this one! I enjoyed your version very much Tom! It has a good "blues shouter" style and feel to it that is very appealing to my ears--some good playing on this as well. Thanks for performing this great old song! Michael

Classic
Michael, Once again I think our shared love of the old songs comes through. They really are classics even if a lot of the younger folks have never heard them before.

Authentic take...
Hi Tom. Nice, authentic take on a blues classic. The guitar accompaniment is subtle and complements the vocals very well. Well done. Regards, Peter.

Excellent
Interpretation of an old standard. Great guitar, and the vocals have a sort of old timey authenticity.

I'm Old
What can I say? Any authenticity comes from having heard old time folk, blues and jazz in the 60's when there were a lot of folks doing that kind of music. Appreciate the comments though and hope you come back again sometime.

Josh White
Haven't heard that name in a while. One of the first guys I ever heard do an acoustic style blues. Loved that sound then and still love it now.

I love to play guitar. I have been writing songs for many years and have a large catalog by this time. Songwriting is easy. Writing great songs is hard! Born in Louisiana and live in Texas. I grew up on Chuck, Jerry Lee, Elvis, Ricky, Little Richard ... [see more]
