Description
I Don't Know What To Do With Myself...... i had that line in mind when i first started working out the chord progression to this. But i have been spending a lot of time doing home repair and remodeling for a good chunk of the summer. so it couldn't be about me.

usually i work slowly on a song, a little bit here, a little bit there. in this case i blazed through it in a couple evenings. the lyrics and vocals came last.....with just the chorus line planned the rest seemed to come about fast and actually make sense

Lyrics
I Don't Know What To Do

a barista counts the days
working for minimal pay
serving coffee all day
she can barely stay
a waitress waits and waits
on customers all day
the bills are on the way
and she says

i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself

a homeless soldier
waits for his meal for the day
collecting cans on the way
day after day
a prisoner in a cell
regretting what he did
if i could start over again
and he says

i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself

the routine's the same
day after day
you just want to escape
from this place

an old man in his years
holding back the tears
if i could do it all again
just once more
and so it goes
some things are dreams
some things will never be
and we say

i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do
with myself
i don't know what to do

Complex structure here Vic!
Its like sweeping back and forth but your vocals hold it all in place, carving out your unique high singing! All along it hangs onto the edge of vintage rock but never really tipping its hat to it if you know what I mean. Then crushing it down with some killer leads! Thanks again my friend!

its a fairly simple chord progression. i went 6/4 here on most of it, and it's the added side things that can give it a bit more complex sound. originally i was thinking of doing a very distorted straight ahead shoegazer style.

thanks about the bass. i originally ran it through a stereo chorus plug-in, it sounded very cool but took up so much sonic space that i had to revert to a straight ahead sound. thanks for the listen

Really good
This is up there with your best songs. This has elements of several musical styles (oldies, Beatles, 90s rock), your vocals sound perfect for this song. Love the lead too. Great job. A-1 song here man, just top drawer. Thanks for the DL.

i agree it has some grab bag musical elements, i was about to add some electronica effects but decided to keep more straight forward with just the guitars.

Excellent post! I really like the chorus. A feast of great guitar tones! Melodic bass line Paul would be proud of. Well produced and mix!

i think this is the simplest chorus i have ever done, just two lines. i really didn't have to do much at the mixing stage. every thing was pretty well set when i recorded the tracks. kind of a relief actually

Vic Holman has posted a new song, said my email
A holiday here in Germany. So, I could kick back and enjoy this song in the early afternoon.
It reminds me of something. I think the Byrds, Buddy Holly-ish, Harrison. But I must say a female voice would give this a totally different sound and mood.

Very mellow tune Vic. Like it a bunch.

Love the textures in this. Has a nice building feel, too. Bass and guitars are just right. Interesting melody, too. Diggin' the lead break.

Home repair
So cool when a single idea can serve to unfold a whole song. I enjoy the retro acoustic guitar feel. Your vocals had a homeless soldier feel in spots. I could hear the prisoner looking for fresh air.

Man, I really would feel exhausted if I had to start over. Yet, if death is the only alternative, I'm in too. Unless it would be in an endless loop of home repair projects...

a endless loop of home repairs....... kill me now! it was all stuff that really need to be done....... i can slack off now.

to me it was kind of weird how i could come up with the characters in this song so fast.... no rewrites or editing, parts of it i improvised as i went along, i liked the immediacy of that

Very different
This has a real commercial feel about it. A little like a pop song from the 70s.

I really like the groove and it holds together. A mixture of obvious and the unexpected.

Clever work Vic and up there with your best.

Cheers

The Easiness of Vic
Vic, it seems to me that over the years, you've learned how to relax as you write your music. You just seem to know how to ease into song after song while most of us struggle.

You get better with every song.

Thanks for so many downloads!

I can relate to the lyric lately... The odd time signature is cool, and there are some killer lead breaks. Vocals sound strong. Polished sounding mix.
