Sounds great. Everything really grooves well together. Great arrangement of melody, textures, and rhythm. It's not clear from your description how much samples and loops play their part in it.

section. The samples are some of my

Impressive production! Nice style..laid back and funky, morphing into a harder driving tune after the spine tingling trumpet wrapping up w/ a nice snappy ending. Great vocals as well. Hey, I'm happy!

Wow quite incredible production to have for your first
project. I wish that one one of my pieces could compare.
It sounds as if you were in a professional music studio. I
can't even imagine my mac turning anything this good
out, everything on down to the pristine sounding
compression on the drum tracks!!!! What kind of G4 do
you use? Wow!!! My G4, Dual 867 mhz would be on fire if
I tried to turn out a track this hot!!!! Must be quite a
processor that your brother has in that one.

Are you sure that you did this with a G4 and Garage Band?
I am certainly jealous. I also look forward to more to
come from you MiMi.

Sincerely,
MidiMacMan.

Thank you MMM. The computer is a G4 1.25 with over 1 gig of memory. My brother is a very good musician, and not just cause he is my brother. I used Garageband tol l;oop the drums and the second bassline.I wanted tempo changes but garrageband does not allow this. I imported to Logicexpress and used a tempo map. Credit should also go to the trumpet palyer for help in mastering using the program Peak with some great plugins.

Professional Recording????? &mdash 02/08/05 - 06:06:17 AM
Please also tell me what you did to the drum tracks. They sound great. I am
sure that you used compression on them, but was it outboard on through
Garage Band? I also would love to know what microphones you used on this
recording. The pickup is great!! Was it a condenser mic? One more
thing.......if you wouldn't mind sharing. What instrumentations were involved.
I am guessing alto sax and trumpet, but did you overdub the harmonies, or
was it more than one person playing each instrument? Also did you record
each instrument separetely and then mixdown and proceed your work with
Logic?

MidiMacMan.

Professional Recording????? &mdash 02/08/05 - 07:23:50 AM
Thanks for you interest.Drums were not processed, the loops were already
processed and I left them alone ,as adding more processing would muddy
things up. I used various mikes laying around brothers house, an
AKG,Rode, and Neumann, and overdubbed my vocals to various tracks. I
played all the synth parts, some from the Roland and some from Logic. The
second faster section I added acoustic bass loops and new drum loops. My
brothers motto is to use compression sparingly and when called for.

Great selection of mics you had indeed!!!! And about the instrumentations
did you have a trumpet or two in there?

One trumpet and one alto sax are the only live instruments., well my synth
playing counts for live I guess.

Drenched in great horn work &mdash 02/08/05 - 07:46:52 AM
A totally hip drenched performance. Love the combo of
electronic and great acoustic performances, sax and
trumpet absolutely pro, sound like pro samples. The
change of tempo after the trumpet seemed unnecessary
and a little unintegrated, yet after it got going I dug it too,
especially after the horns came back in. Yes, I'd love to
hear more lyrics, or more scatting that matched the great
horns. But a really slick track that is radio ready (on soft
jazz stations). CD ready. (I'd put this in the jazz category?
Well, when keywords get instituted, you can cross-
reference it. But the jazz horn work is so good, I'd hate to
have jazz fans miss it.)

This was a very intoxicating groove that was very enjoyable. Excellent singing and musicianship! Keep 'em coming!

I just wrote that nuvolino's tune was energetic and
sophisticated... and now I want to write it again... I
am becoming a cliche! I love the addition of the sax
and the fast drum rhythm that kicks in. Very well
done!

Excellent Production &mdash 02/09/05 - 12:30:43 AM
Fantastic job on the production. Vocals were great too -
would really like to hear more of them. The horns are pro
work, for sure - what kind of band does your brother
have? They must be pretty darn good. Like Tobin, I
thought the tempo change unnecessary - I think just a
change in the percussion would keep it from getting
repetitive. Anyway, great job. One of the best first
offerings I've heard.

Congratulations! &mdash 02/09/05 - 02:14:09 PM
I can't stand the sound of saxophone... I don't know why,
just a little glitch in my system, but they sound GREAT in
this track! Perhaps because they're used sparingly or
maybe it's the rhythm that steers them into a tasty
direction.

Definitely pro production on this piece: clean and
dynamic. Agree with a couple other comments about more
vocals although, they're not necessary for this track, but
look forward to more!

I wouldn't have understood the first syllable without that.
Let alone the second.

Great groove. Masterful use of loops and of effects. Some
pretty extreme reverb somewhere, but it works fine.

The production is terrific! &mdash 02/10/05 - 07:25:53 AM
Although the style of music isn't really my thing, this is
one of the best produced tracks I've heard on here. The
final sound is so professional, the moment the first beat
kicks in at the start, it sounds like a pro CD.

The playing is wonderful. That trumpet is brilliant.

Wonderful job.

mix of hot and cool &mdash 02/10/05 - 02:07:29 PM
I guess that makes me warm to this genre! Very fun
bouncy but smooth jazz... not sure how you accomplished
bouncy and smooth together, but that's what it felt like to
me. I thought it was well mixed, nice melodies and
excellent playing. Packo mentioned not liking the sound
of the sax, and I sort of agree, the EQ on it made it sound
almost like a Fisher Price Sax (do they make those?) It had
a slightly flangy plasticy quality, can't really explain it. But
it didn't grate on me too much. Anyway, wow! Very nice
first piece!

mix of hot and cool &mdash 02/11/05 - 07:20:26 PM
Toy sax. The acoustic jazz sound normally doesn't have delay effects applied
but since this is a crosspollination, effects of the electronica world would
natuarlly be applied. But I am happy you enjoyed the music.

cats &mdash 02/11/05 - 07:18:41 AM
More sax and horns. They can really play. I like it when
different genre players jam together, when different
sounds overlay and work. Yeah, this should be in jazz
because the best thing is the sax and horn playing and
thats jazz, but I like the stuff you play underneath. Since
its so long, I'd have liked more lyrics, something more
meaty to hold it together; but as a ramble, this is the cats.

well done! &mdash 02/14/05 - 10:45:48 AM
This track has so many interesting aspects to it; the
sounds are combined, mixed and produced very well. It's
amazing that this is your first GB/Logic effort.

The live instruments add a lot of sparkle to this track, and
you've blended the software instruments in with them
seamlessly.

My only minor observation is that the first material has no
real relation to the next (faster), much longer section.
Both are very interesting sections, but it's almost like
there are "two songs in one". It might have tied together
more effectively had you re-introduced the first material
again at the end.

But then this piece would have been even longer than it
already is.

The material presented here is excellent; you are an
accomplished musician with a great ear. Anyone who can
combine sounds this well and present them convincingly
is a good musician in my book.

Thank you Cameron. My music recording has always been on the PC logic
version and Protools. I have started using garageband and logic express while
hanging out with brother a mac fanatic. I must say I am hooked on
Gagrageband, as I can sketch and compose my ideas quickly, and then
transfer over to Logic, and Peak for the finishing touches. It is truly fun and
quick to work with. Thanks for your kind words!

Talk about comprehensive number! I love the musical changes, the sultriness of your singing, the funky tempos and musicianship of you brother's bandmates. You blur the line between loops and real instruments...now that's creativity. This one's a keeper. Big marks, MiMi. You made an instant fan here.:)
