Description

This is the collaboration I've been wanting to do since I started recording my own music back in 2005 -- I didn't know any of these great musicians at the time, but I'd always imagined getting some great players together and recording something live -- one person doing only what they could do on stage, and each of us recording in a single take, which we videod as we were doing it (we nearly pulled that off!). It was an added bonus to be able to do it as a video, and I can't express enough how grateful I am that these 6 players/singers were willing to put in the time and creative energy to humour me ☺

The lineup certainly contains some of the cream of the MacJams musical community:

John Libby (ktb) from Boston, Massachusetts on keys has played on quite a few of my songs, and has collaborated with lots of people on MJ. He always produces just what is required, and is one of the fastest collaborators I've ever worked with -- if he was any faster, he'd be sending me keyboard tracks to songs I hadn't even written yet! I especially love John's electric piano and clav work (e.p. here).

Anne Cozean and Marty Ross Vining (SISTERS) from North Fork, California are as good as close harmony vocals get. I've worked with Big Sis (Anne) before on quite a few songs, but this is the first chance to have Marty singing along -- welcome on board Marty. Their video submissions were full of warmth and humour, as you'll see -- and they sure can sing!

Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) from Stirling, Virginia on drums. I think I've probably collaborated more with Mike than anyone else on MJ, and for good reason: he plays great drums and his style and mine seem to mesh perfectly. On top of that he's a very decent guy who seems to have his head screwed on particularly well. I've played live with a few terrific drummers, but Mike would be my first choice in any live band I might be putting together (geographic considerations aside). Mike was also the video guru for this project.

Chris Flynn (rok41) from Dallas, Texas on bass. I haven't collaborated with Chris before -- mainly because I do my own bass usually -- but have enjoyed his accurate and thoughtful bass skills since I first heard him a while ago at MJ. Chris is (literally in this case) a bass player's bass player, and does a great job here.

Thor Oliversen (thodi) from Stavanger, Norway on guitar -- last but definitely not least - always surprises and delights with his soul/R&B/funk guitar. We've recorded 3 of my songs together now, and they are 3 of my favourites. Watching his enthusiasm and soulful playing (wait for the solo!) was one of the high points of this project for me.

I'm playing Tele and singing from Pambula Beach, NSW, Australia -- and I mixed and mastered the audio and video.

I would do pretty much anything to play live with this collection of really classy people.

"Safe Hands" was written after I'd invited everyone to do "a video project" -- nothing like having a bit of pressure on to write something reasonable! The inspiration for the song story is a little obscure (no-one will be surprised that it's a plea to our prime minister!), I think the words can fit a number of situations though. The style is one I feel very comfortable with.

The video seemed like a good idea at the time -- how hard could doing a video with 7 people be? I hadn't considered the fact that we would all be using different cameras, different frame rates, different screen ratios, be shooting in different light, in different-looking rooms, with different zoom levels and from different angles ..... etc. I also hadn't considered that my computer would battle with the file sizes or that I might have forgotten my (already limited) knowledge of Final Cut Express. Let's just say it came out OK considering, and that it shows a number of MJ friends doing what they do. It's not likely to win any prizes, but it was fun to do.

I hope you enjoy the music and the video!

Safe Hands
©2011 Neil Porter

What’s up?
Cat got your tongue?
Sooner or later we all make mistakes
Stand up
See what you’ve done
You get it wrong
Just don’t do it again
Just reassure me
Just want to know
Please reassure me
I’m in a pair of safe hands

Watch out
Look at my face
Nothing you’ve done’s gonna make me lose faith
Look out
Stay with the pack
Unless you stumble you’ll never look back
Just reassure me
I just want to know
Please reassure me
I’m in a pair of safe hands

Warm heart so you can feel where I’m coming from
Warm heart, warm heart
A cool head so you know when I get it wrong
Cool head, warm heart
Clear eyes so you can see what you need to see
Clear eyes, warm heart
Safe hands, safe hands
I need to know
You’ve got a pair of safe hands

Don’t need that kind of behaviour
Just need some kind of a plan
Don’t want some kind of a saviour
Just want a pair of safe hands
Just reassure me
I just want to know
Please reassure me
I’m in a pair of safe hands

Warm heart so you can feel where I’m coming from
Warm heart, warm heart
A cool head so you know when I get it wrong
Cool head, warm heart
Clear eyes so you can see what you need to see
Clear eyes, warm heart
Safe hands, safe hands
I need to know
You’ve got a pair of safe hands

Warm heart, warm heart

Cool head, warm heart

Clear eyes, warm heart

Safe hands, safe hands
I need to know
You’ve got a pair of safe hands

First!
This is outstanding, Neil. What a collection of musicians! There's no doubt that MacJams offers opportunities that would be stellar if they could happen live on stage. But to the music itself: the lyrics are spot on -we look for a lot in our leaders but safe hands are crucial. Very solid drums and bass. I do love the guitar solos - both the tone and the notes. Rich vocals with the harmony lines fleshing things out so smoothly. Excellent mix. An impressive piece of music - congratulations to all involved.

Thanks for the comments from "Down South"! It kind of turned out OK didn't it ;) I really have been wanting to do this for a long while, but only recently realised that the only way to play with such classy players is to ask them - luckily I didn't get even one knock-back, so I was pretty pleased. Next step is to try for something similar locally and do a few gigs. Maybe an idea for the new year.
Sorry I've missed so much of your music - just had to have an MJ break for a while.
Cheers from the Far North.

Hi Neil. Haven't chased down the video yet, but I will. The song itself is spot on. Did you wait until today (after the Carbon Tax vote) to post it? Great performances by all concerned. Fantastic mix/master. Love the guitar work but it is all just right. Single takes as well! A highpoint of the MJ year. Take care all. Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter
Thanks for the comment. No it was purely coincidental. The song/video project started in early June, and the posting date was really determined by when I thought it seemed ready to go - I was pretty keen to show it off when it finally came together.

Hi Maurice
No optical shocks - we did come pretty close to a few though before I remembered how to cross-fade in Final Cut Express :) I have been thinking about this for a long while now and was really pleased to see it come to fruition. The band has leave to head back to their own stuff at MJ now ;)

Without a doubt...
...some of the best Prime Minister Rock that I have EVER heard. I really don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this...

Beyond that...well....I'm just in a helpless, envious rage...you know, foaming at the mouth while biting the carpets, that sort of thing...

I had just had a talk a couple weekends ago with a close friend of mine who JUST got into making videos of himself playing on his Mac, and I was JUST thinking, "Man...the video thing is going to be the next frontier on MacJams...", and there you are already doing it...

The fact that you're doing it without glitches and embarrassing mistakes and unprofessional touches is just SOOOOOO annoying....

And I can't even turn my jealousy into proper pettiness, because it's really GOOD...

Oh well. Have to go plot my revenge. Sigh. So there's ONE good thing...

Mikes drums have lots of feel and Rock 41 lays it down both making a solid bed. And finally Neil your smooth vocals along with the talented sisters make this one cool groovin' tune. Neil - that was some experience! What a slave-driver you were, directing us to reach deeply inside to find the true motivation in our ooooo's......8) Seriously - Marty and I were delighted to be part of this. So many takes, so many of them left on the editing room floor: a sweet vocal take, but Marty's teeth were purple from my fresh out of the oven boysenberry cobbler - scratch that take. Next take even better, but my bun was crooked...can't have that! I loved discovering that Chris Flynn and rok41 are one and the same - didn't know til the credits appeared. Chris' beautifully burbling bass was just what the doctor ordered. To see John Libby playing with such calm focus was cool - his keys are understated, but I think his part and Chris' are the glue that holds this together. What a pleasure to behold Mike in action - from the first opening smack to the last masterful wrap it up whack, the man possesses a serious confidence, and we can all hear and see why. I watched Thor's video with no sound early one morning, and thought I'd pushed the x2 speed! He injects his dynamite energy into this with his very first note - and he only gets better. I can't tell if YOU are choking the guitar, or if it's choking YOU, Thor, but the physical exchange between you is amazing. Neil - thank you for putting up with my endless questions - I wish Jan had made a video of you making this video! How you can play and sing at the same time eludes me, but damn! You sing with such a mellow, sexy voice, and the guitar seems to be a truly effortless extension of your musical mind. The lyrics are always the last thing to penetrate my brain - but you've got a very solid write here and the chorus is a winner. Don't know if you've heard, but Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - and this surely did the trick. Please sign us: Another Satisfied Set o' Sisters

Well this song is certainly in safe hands!

Great groove. Very cool sound and brilliant the way that everyone melded together.

The laid back, easy and effortless 'Knopfler-esque?' sound plays safe just a little bit for me, like contemporary Dylan, but then again, i am not the one with the gumption to stand in front of a camera!

Really enjoyed this one. Looks like everyone had a lot of fun doing it.

MIKE WATKINS
Mike Watkins - the Open and Close Taking Lens image gets my "Safe Hands" Musician Award for the confidence he exudes for the intimidating Role of the Master of Ceremonies, Open/Close of a Video Project. Just the Perfect "nothing is going to go Wrong" look to his gestures in those parts.

Also, overall, the B-Roll Cutaways and Fill shots are really good. You have to watch more than once to even notice the very few Continuity changes that pop up here and there. And, they're no Big Deal.

Love the cool vibe, the hip use of reggae and blues. Really nice. Great drums, elegant funky guitar, great mix. Fabulous collaboration.

Struck
I don't know whether to ramble on about how good all the elements are in this piece, or whether that will just overlook some gem in there that is also worthy of high praise. So to be closer to the mark: This is one hell of a tune and the video is the icing on the cake. You all deserve huge credit for making this evening most memorable as I watched the video slack-jawed (and I suspect I'm not the only one who felt this way).

Thanks for putting out such fine music and showing us what can be done.

Be well,
Doug

Safe Hands
I have only been around here for a while. A few hours a day, looking and listening around. So I have been learning who is who and what is what, and from what little I have learned, it appears that you guys have raised the bar substantially. How's anybody going to measure up to that? I can hardly wait to see. You all are inspirational. And I think I'm in love with the Sisters.

I confess
I watched the video- was impressed, captivated and brought to a general state of awe. Then I listened to the song... Wow!

The whole project is really very fantastic and makes me wish I had a face for camera and not for radio!

Great job, everyone!

Best yet
Hi Neil, I'm just trying to remember what's the best thing I've heard on MJ and I'm thinking this is up there with the best. The video adds a whole new dimension to the listening experience and it was well worth the effort putting it together.
Cheers
Steve
