Solo e pensoso

Description
A madrigal by Luca Marenzio based on a poem by Petrarch.

This stuff is outrageous. Listen to the weird harmonies in the beginning, and all the switches in texture throughout. The guy was deservedly considered a master of the late renaissance.

I transcribed it for recorder quintet. The original 5 voices were written in ordinary G clef, mezzo soprano clef, twice alto clef, and dropped bass clef, which last one is so rare that I didn't even know it existed. Needless to say, this would have been unplayable from the original score.

Lyrics
Solo e Pensoso"

Italian text from:
Antologia della Letteratura Italiana
(Messina-Florence, 1960),
Angelo Gianni, ed., pp. 450-451.

English translation by William H. Fredlund.

Solo e pensoso i piú deserti campi
vo mesurando a passi tardi e lenti,

Alone and deep in thought
I measure with slow and lingering steps
the deserted fields,
ready to flee if my eyes discern
a human footprint in the sand.

No other defense have I,
that will save me from
the knowing glances of mankind,
for in my looks, bereft of joy,
one may read outwardly
how I burn within.

So that now I think
only the mountains and the hillsides,
the streams and forests,
know the temper of my life,
that which is hidden from all men.

Yet no path is so harsh, so savage,
that Love cannot find a way to join me,
and to speak to me,
and for me to respond.

Strange harmonies
for the renaissance. I keep wondering how they're going to be resolved, but it always works out. Don't think I've heard Marenzio's music before. Thanks for this adventure off the beaten track.

It
makes me think of a man, alone and searching for his limits or better yet, reaching for his heights. You are such a wondrous master of your instrument that I became aware of nothing else but this music. It ended and suddenly, I felt chilled. You created an environment for the mind akin to hypnotism. Marenzio couldn't have chosen a better collaborator. Thanks.

your recorders reminds me of that Gentle Giant sound sometimes--like woofer3's vocals do. but more in the classical than classical rock vein. i can hear much control here and i think that's just part of your style. another peaceful listen which my ears always welcome.

Atmospheric
Had to chase Luca up on the net to find out a bit more about him whilst listening to this, Vic. Enjoyed the unusual atmosphere the piece created and the expert playing and production. Thanks for bringing something different to MJ. Regards, Peter.

It's always good
to hear your recorder ensemble pieces Vic. This was most enjoyable. I have some friends who play old recorder music as a 5 piece and will forward this to them (don't know why I haven't done that before!).
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Nice work Vic.
A strange piece. As if he was a composer who was sent back in time.

Very accomplished and beautifully played.

Cheers

Time
The late 1500s were full of very strange music. Extreme chromatism, and rhythmic complexity that Zappa would be proud of. We tend to thing of that era as very sweet, soothing, inoffensive music, but there is some strange stuff out there. This piece is an extreme example, but there are many more.

Thanks for the compliments.

Wow
This is beautiful! Such a lot of work you must have put into this! Awesome.

I played in a Renaissance ensemble as a kid. A bit of recorder in the beginning, then the alto bassoon(?) We even went to Berlin to perform in our velvet dresses ;-) I also played the alto recorder for a while - so much nicer as a solo instrument than the soprano. Now my youngest daughter is having a go at it...

Well, thanks and take care,
Henke

the renaissance
was just as dynamic as any time in history. There were very different things going on. For instance, people were trying to imagine what ancient greek music sounded, which led to Orlando Lassus' "Profetiae Sybillarum" (prophecies of the Sybil) which is harmonically as wild as this piece. Marenzio and Gesualdo were trying to depict words (poems) in music, and used wild swings in harmony to correspond to the different moods in lines of the text.

And don't get me started on the Baldwine manuscript. I haven't posted any of that, because it's completely unplayable. Rhythmic complexities of a Zappa-like level.
