Description
Those crazy kids from Minneapolis present another of their tunes about Outer Space! We wrote this 40 years ago just in anticipation that there would someday be a contest about space.

This tune ultimately was given a new set of lyrics and the title "Alter Ego", and a shorter version ended up on the "B" side of a 45 record we released in 1974 under our new name "The Robert Moore Group".

In true
deep-space travel style, this tune has been in cryogenic hibernation for 40 years, waiting for an opportunity to re-emerge from its lonely meanderings across the void. How cool is that? :-D

Ha! I just read your bio. Most excellent, I have to say. I can relate entirely, save I never played anything live, sadly.

Thoroughly good stuff anyway. Nice one!

cryogenic hibernation
Thank you.... boy, we could have used your word smithing skills back in 1971!

We loved playing live. To this day I still maintain that a truly talented artist can create and record an incredible song in a studio AND play it live and still sound exactly live the studio album.

Thanks for the listen!

Cool
Different from what many think of as space music today, but who really knows or can decide? This is way cool, for then or for now or any time. The ending is killer. Pro stuff, obviously. Thanks for participating, and for the download :-)

Take care,
Henke

Different
Yes, you are correct. Had we written a song today for MJ Space Race I think it would nothing like this. Back then space was the great unknown and without all of the synth's and processing of today, our "space songs" were driven by the lyrics rather the music. Most of our space songs seemed to touch on "visitors" watching us, possibly judging us, and astronauts were thought of as intergalactic "sailors".

Thanks for the comments. Pretty neat to hear when a few teenagers could do with 2 tape recorders, the inside of a 8x8' bank vault (great for vocals), a bathroom with ceramic walls (another great place for "live" vocals, and a 50 foot long hallway with mics placed every 10 feet for delay.

what is old is new again
revamp the vamp. one can feel the adrenaline in the organ and drums and bass and guitars, acting like afterburners to propel the lyrics forward 40 years. Deep Space Purple sounds create temporal ripples of joy. What a cool time capsule to open.

Time Capsule
I love that... "Time Capsule". I am planning on cleaning up all of our material digitally, and send copies to all the band members. I think you just gave me a title for our "album".

Thank you so very much for your colorful "spaced-out" review! BTW- LOVE your Starsong Lullaby.

Reminds me of Rush
It is so fun to have people listen to our music and tell us the influences they hear in what we wrote. My sin-in-law is a drummer (master degree in percussion) and a die-hard Rush Fanatic.

Thank you for the kind words! We really appreciate them.

Rush ... no ... Yes
You guys are (were) consistent in doing that upbeat prog thing. And doing it so well. So glad that you anticipated the SRC 2011. Keep flying the prog flag!

Rush... no ... Yes
We had a lot of influences, and Yes was one of the strongest ones. We weren't trying to mimc them... we were both evolving in somewhat similar directions. Having our songs or style compared to them just served to validate that we were creating something new, different.

As this was not written for the "Space Race Contest 2011" event this really doesn't qualify, but we thought as long as people are listening to Space themed songs, we might as well toss in one of ours

Thanks!

(BTW... There are a couple of our songs that we would have loved to hear Jon Anderson vocalize... heck we can dream, cant we?)

Now then
this is a different take on the Space-race Challenge.... it's virtually a modern take on the first Sputnik song, but with lyrics..... great Bio by the way..... really enjoyed this rock around the rocks..... great instrumentals and apt vocals, regards M

Different Take.....
I think our agent used that term when describing us to some prospective clients. It seems that a lot of our songs either were about outer space or politics. We tossed in a little booze and love for balance. Thanks for listening!

Keep on keeping on...
That was the name of the game. Hundred of miles driving each day, play for a couple hours, get a couple hours of sleep, and off to the next gig. The song "Turn the Page" by Bob Seger really said it all.

First of all I love the photo. It recalls Deep Purple making Machine Head. The blend of instruments recalls Purple while the riffs and melodies recalls Tony Kaye era Yes. Sonically this is one of the best quality tracks you've posted. Keep them coming!

Deep Purple & Tony Kaye era Yes
Both groups that we still love today. This was shot in the practice studio we rented because our parents kicked the band out of the house because we were too loud and practiced 4 hours a day.

Re: Sonic quality. Oh how I wish I could lay my hands on the old 4 channel master tapes so I could clean them up and remix them. Always appreciate and enjoy your comments... and I still play a number of your tunes for my grandkids.

Lots of Energy
God what I wouldn't give for that energy today! And I don't think we ever got tired... we get pumped up with anticipation before a show, pumped up when the audience got into our music during the show, and pumped up after the show when we would critique every minute of every song. Friends doing what we loved to do! Thanks, Char!!
