Description

Deadlines:
It's been two years since the last Space Race and I've had many ideas running around my head for a while but never got around to ever really doing anything with them. Finally with a deadline rapidly approaching I realized it was time - which of course there never is enough of but I think I have enough to get you out of our atmosphere and into space.

Come aboard I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping you'll survive and get to the Outerworlds.
And thank you Eduard for challenging us once again.

Outerworlds is in 5 parts:
The Base
Lifting Off
The Long Night
Breaking Through
A New Earth

While I have mixed feelings about music videos because they so influence much of what your inner eyes see when you hear music, yet still I couldn't resist trying to come up with something that if not a perfect representation of the music at least for me caught it's spirit.

So glad to have you join the challenge, Charles. This is grand musical story-telling.

1-The legato strings paint a stark, yet beautiful picture of the base.
2-Lifting off... Holst on, here we go... to Mars, perhaps? :-)
3-The long night seems murky and strange, perfect for the dissonant disorientation of space.
4-Finally breaking through, the heart begins to pick up the excitement of something new. The low cellos deepen the mystery and add a little trepidation to the overly excited strings.
5-The grand dawning of a new day, somewhere else, but time to enjoy the completion of a long journey.

Great sections, which fit nicely together, very well done. Thank you for creating such a colorful story with music.

Great epic adventure is about to blast off, leading into the suspense of the take off and taking us into the smooth satin black of space. I have noticed in your pieces that it has a great soundtrack quality of exploration whether on land sea or space. Wonderful transitions. Very inspirational. Inspires me to finish my next piece.

story you build here, Charles. At first I was going to ask when the movie will be premiering(?) but after hearing it all I'm not sure if any more visuals are needed ;-)

I'd very much like
to have the skill with strings/orchestration that you clearly have. I am particularly partial to your fleeting use of dissonance (as at, say, 1:31 and the entire "Long Night" section); very effective! This would not be at all out of place in a Prog rock setting. Lovely stuff.

(The artwork is interesting, too. The design of the spaceships is very similar to something Patrick Woodroffe might have done in the late 1970's. They have a lightweight quality that could only have been convincing at the moment of their conception... how times change!!)

Excellent!
Focused composition. The few words you use as titles are enough to guide the imagination and the various scenarios come appear vividly in one's mind. Very efficient score and an equally nice choice of samples. On a minor technical note, the bass frequencies in the bass string section are a bit boomy after 6:50.Very impressed though! Great job from beginning to end. I'd say 'Lifting Off' is my favorite for the full sound and clear lines in the composition.

I did
have mixing problems (not unusual for me) I think some are fixed in the video version but there's always so much more to do.

I'm happy you enjoyed it and while I generally don't want to burden a listener with excess verbiage and agree that the simple act breakdown works well for this I'm of course doing something totally at odds with this now and posting a video.

What an Opus
Right off the bat I will say that this is you most nuanced and expansive work I've come across, and it is a joy to hear. You have taken all of the thematic devices you have used in the past (the march to the inevitable, for instance) and woven them into this new piece. For sure I hear Holstian influences, but then for most of contemporary music written around epic topics that would also apply as well. I particularly love the sense of drifting and vastness you bring forth in 'The Long Night', with the melodic wandering in a haunting and highly engaging violin passage.

All of the sections were highly emotive, such as the soaring melodic lead in the final movement, and you deserve a TON of credit for the artistic variety you have brought forth as well in the skillful way these parts weave the whole story. (Also credit for just dealing with this much music - that's a lot of good decision making!!!)

I certainly feel like I've been on a journey, and after the whole host of experiences, this end is most satisfying!
