Description:
The Ninth Century Japanese saga pretty much the way it was told to me by a friend. It's a long story. The category should be "literary," but spoken word is close enough, although as I worked on it I kept thinking of it as a "prose song."

A spoken adult book &mdash 02/09/05 - 05:23:15 PM
Kinda funny. Quite theatrical. I could enjoy this more if the
narrator's voice were a little louder and resonant. The
music, as enjoyable as it is, is too dominant. The stereo
separation is perfect. Ukifuni gets boinked? This is a literal
scholarly translation? Hah! [ Reply to This ]

presentation. Your style is very engaging and I kept smiling as you told the story. I agree your voice could be louder.
"Boinked"? How did you get that past the censors??? Whoa!

To both of you, thanks for responding. This retelling of an old tale attempts to be many things - literary, humorous, narrative, lyrical, inventive, colloquial and true to the story, but certainly not a literal translation. By trying to be too much, perhaps it risks becoming nothing. But it represents an effort at trying something new with music for me (prose story-telling set to music), and it's been an engaging experiment. I appreciate your suggestions, and I will keep those ideas in mind when I revisted the piece.
As for word choice, settling on an appropriate word to describe the overt intimate action prevalent in the generally actionless story (this is no account of "arms and the man" in a Western sense of drama), "boink" became the default choice out of many possibilities, partially because it is ambiguous, partially because it is inoffensive and partially because it seems musical. Maybe the piece should have been categorized as "adult."

Boink-o-rama! &mdash 05/26/05 - 10:07:34 AM
What a fascinating piece. I loved the storytelling, and the
music was very well done. I do have to agree with the
others that the balance was off. The music was very loud
on my speakers and the voice rather soft. For a piece so
focused on storytelling, that has to take center stage. The
music should be the backdrop, not the star. But you had a
great idea and I liked much of the execution. [ Reply to This ]
