Don't Look So Surprised (w/ jiguma and Philip18)

Description
This song began its life with a simple Em to D riff and a mumble that ended with the word “realized”. I then had some fun end rhyming with that word for the rest of the song ☺.

I laid down a drum track and added some echo vocals and harmonies and then decided it was time to ask “The Great Southern Band” (jiguma and Philip18) to come back on the virtual road for another collaboration.

Luckily they both readily agreed and, as always, quickly provided tracks that worked in really well with where I thought the song should head.

I had downloaded the trial version of Ozone 5 and been re-mastering a few of my earlier songs (with impressive results) so I decided to have a go at mastering this (even though I had the master masterer, Neil, on board). Neil offered to give me some advice along the way and it has been invaluable.

The “Great Southern Band”:
Peter – composer, vocals, centre rhythm guitar, drum loops, mix & master
Neil – bass, B3 backer and solo, mastering advice
Philip – lead guitar, left/right channel guitars.

Hope you like our second collaboration.

Peter

Lyrics
Don’t Look So Surprised – Peter Bowen (2011)

Intro and all verses: Em D (repeated)

I’ve just realized
You’ve been telling lies ‘bout me
It’s opened my eyes
And I’m intent on getting free

Don’t look so surprised
You’ve had it coming for a while
You dropped your disguise
Showed the guile behind your smile

[C] Now that I [D] know
That all we [Bm7] had is just a [Em7] sham
[C] I’m stepping on [D] out
About [B7] you, I don’t give a [B7/D#] damn

Now I’ve recognized
You don’t really care about me
Let’s be civilized
And end this misery

Bridge
[G] The time to [A] live and let live is [Em] past
[G] I’ve es[A]caped your spell at [B7/D#] last

Lead (over one verse and chorus)

I won’t fantasize
‘Bout you changing your false ways
And I won’t temporize
This is our end of days

And I can’t sanitize
All the pain you put me through
And I can’t theorize
Why you don’t feel the same way too

[C] Now that I [D] know
That all we [Bm7] had is just a [Em7] sham
[C] I’m stepping on [D] out
About [B7] you, I don’t give a [B7/D#] damn

So don’t dramatize
‘Cause you don’t love me anymore
I’m revitalized
And I’m walking out that door.

Clear mix...
Hi Stan. The combination of Ozone and Neil's suggestions led to the clear mix. Glad you enjoyed the melody. Philip's guitars are tasty as always and, even though Neil doesn't think so, he can do a good job with a B3. Thanks for listening. Take care, Peter

Peter
Really time honored piece takes me back to late 60's early 70's Progressive Rock. There was a syndicated DJ Dr. John who pioneered the propagation of this sound. You my friend are well schooled. I dig this Rock n Roll tribute immensely.

southern rock
The sound is spot on. Really nice.

During the guitar solo halfway in the track it sounds like the Hammond is also going into a solo. I think that should have been a more backing-like track. Just nitpicking....

The best of both worlds?
Hi Vic. Thanks for having a listen. Glad it came across OK. Yeah, I guess I was trying to have the best of both worlds in that section. I liked what both Neil and Philip had brought to the table during the solo section so I tried to mix it to showcase both... Take care, Peter.

Grateful!
Thanks, Eddie. I have got a few references to the Grateful Dead re my songs over time. Happy with that but I didn't grow up listening to them and actually haven't got any of their albums. Not sure what triggers it, maybe the guitar work? Anyway, the "dudes from down under" appreciate your support. Take care, Peter.
