Description:
This is a soft rock/country ballad about a guy who loses his girl and dreams of winning her back. I wrote and posted the first version of this song in June 2004. You can listen to that original demo at:
http://www.macjams.com/song/2151
In this version, almost everything is new as well as new additions. I rerecorded my lead vocal and rhythm guitar. The flute solo is the original. New are back up harmonies by Richard Schletty and also great lead acoustic guitar licks and flourishes by Bill "the Tiler". Thanks for your contributions guys! Also special thanks to Richard for putting in a lot of time mixing and editing the various parts in order to come up with a unified song. In a couple of days, we will submit another version of this song, with Richard singing the lead vocal. The three of us look forward to all your comments and suggestions.
Artwork is photo I took from the cliff above Aptos, CA beach.
Richard's comments:
Comment: We've taken some of that "cardboard tube" sound out of the
previous version that Jack posted. Jack's voice is "smooth grit" - very honest
and engaging. It was a pleasure adding harmonies to this and mixing it up
in GarageBand 2. Tiler's guitar additions are exceptional. The instrumental
break combining Irish flute and American Country guitar is a nice melding of
cultures. The final GB 2 bounce seems to be better than what Jack was getting with GB 1. I wonder if anyone else has noticed an improvement in fidelity when exporting to iTunes. Could be my imagination. I didn't
have to go running to Logic Express with this one.

Lyrics:
Dreams are for dreamers like me,
Dreaming each day of what could be.
Wondering where you're staying tonight,
Dreaming of still holding you tight.
Dreaming of how our love was so strong,
Wondering how it all went so wrong.
Dreaming of you and me,
Dreaming that we still can be.
Praying that you'll come back to me.
Dreams are for dreamers like me,
Dreaming each night of what could be.
Laying here hoping you are all right,
Knowing somehow we'll make this thing right.
Wishing that you'd forgive me once more,
Dreaming that you'd come back through that door.
To regain what is lost,
I would pay any cost.
Just to have you back with me.
-Instrumental-
Dreams are for dreamers like me,
Dreaming right now of what can be.
Wondering if your're wondering too,
Hoping there's hope for me and you.
Dreaming of you dreaming of me,
Knowing somehow you still believe.
That you love me too,
Just like I love you.
And some day this dream will come true!

Another nice song &mdash 02/09/05 - 04:42:06 AM
Very smooth on the vocals. I really liked the organ
(reminded me of The Band) and wished it was louder. A
very enjoyable song all around! [ Reply to This ]

Yeah, the organ... The Band. I wasn't thinking of them specifically but that organ in this song is a much manipulated and altered loop from GB that captures the seventies sound. That is what I was looking for. The Band, The Allman Brothers, and other groups back then regularly employed that great Hammond organ sound. I love it.
Thanks for your comments,
Jack

This is swish &mdash 02/09/05 - 08:23:23 AM
I can see what you mean with the vocals. The whole song
reacts with the vocals to create a kind of 'cats tongue'
effect; slightly rough but warm and comforting.
Very nicely done, thankfully kept the right side of cheesy..

I grew listening to the music of the fifties and sixties. A lot of cheese back then. Late sixties and into the seventies my tastes changed with the times. Now, well over fifty, a little cheese is back in (every now and then). Glad you gave it a "swish". I hope that's good. : )

Wonderful &mdash 02/09/05 - 10:16:32 AM
Rich and Bill brought so much to this song. Richard has helped me with my vocals. He has a lot of good input to give there. His harmonies are incredible in this song. They really lift it to a higher plane for me. And Bill's guitar work... well, it goes without saying, he is the real thing. His contibution gives it the flavor and feel that was missing from earlier recordings. The slide, the finger picking licks, play off the vocal just right. To me amazing.
So glad you like this.

Great singing! &mdash 02/09/05 - 10:19:35 AM
Great work on this collaboration. The harmonies sent
goosepimples down my spine. Not usually the music I
listen to but there is quality here, and I appreciate good
singing. [ Reply to This ]

very nice &mdash 02/09/05 - 01:18:39 PM
Your voice, the harmonies, and the guitars and flute really work together. Very enjoyable song. I love collaborations. The only problem that I hear is that it sounds like Bill's lead guitar track (great playing, by the way) may have been edited in a few places because I hear the ambient sound and reverb cut in and out in a few places in the second half. If this is the case, perhaps joining the cut-up pieces into one contiguous audio segment would allow the reverb to overlap any cuts. It's minor but I hear something cutting in and out in there.
Anyway, It's a great song with great performances by all and I hope you guys go more stuff together. [ Reply to This ]

It's so wonderful to hear all this talent assembled :)
An enjoyable listen. Breezy, honest, full of delicious
textures and sounds...

The song sounds great when it starts, i love the sound of the guitar.
A good sounding song. I like, [ Reply to This ]
a couple of specifics &mdash 02/09/05 - 03:40:34 PM
Rather than adding to the general accolades, let me point out a couple of specifics I enjoyed in this piece. 1) The line "Dreaming of you dreaming of me" is a nice twist of the theme, and, 2) The way the guitar lets the flute start off the instrumental break, and then joins it - which structurally mirrors the way the singing works, with the harmony joining the lead singer after the first solo verse). [ Reply to This ]
a couple of specifics &mdash 02/09/05 - 03:51:48 PM
Thanks for pointing out some of what you liked here. "Dreaming of you dreaming of me" is my favorite line in this song. Glad it caught your attention.
Richard gets the credit for the delayed entry of the guitar in the instrumental with the flute. Originally they started together. During the mixing process he saw that it worked better as it is now and made the change. Shows the importance of the final editing and mixing stage... not to be rushed.

a couple of specifics &mdash 02/09/05 - 03:56:59 PM
Thanks, Warren. I wasn't sure anyone would catch that delayed entry of the
guitar in the break. It actually had more to do with being unable to synch up
Tiler's guitar licks with the flute in that section, then realizing that the flute
should lead out, as if it is crying out from a distant shore. Some of this
"structure" stuff happens unconsciously or serendipitously...tweaking until it
feels right or flows right. I'm glad you like the parts as well as the sum of the
parts.

Good song &mdash 02/09/05 - 03:55:42 PM
I really wasn't a big fan of the organ bit...especialy
because it ws only on my right side. I thought the guitars
could have been taken better advantage of with some
different mastering. Good song overall. [ Reply to This ]
Good song &mdash 02/09/05 - 04:02:27 PM
By different mastering (of guitar parts) do you mean better mic'ing to start
with or better placement of guitars in stereo space and different ambience
levels? I am not officially trained in as an audio technician/master mixer so
any tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Iseae.

Yeah &mdash 02/09/05 - 04:39:22 PM
I like the feel of this one. Its nice without being cheezy
and boring. A lot of organic, well-fitting textures. Was
that the Jordanaires doing back-up? Ha!
The sound of the lead vocals has a bit of the small-room
reverb sound. I like the honesty of minimal reverb, but
the sound is a bit claustrophobic. It contrasts the comfy
feeling of everything else that is going on. It grabs my
attention when I should be listening intently to the voice
itself. 'Cause the singing is great.
Another terrific collaboration. TG4MJ! [ Reply to This ]
twang &mdash 02/09/05 - 05:51:38 PM
this has a very folksy/country feel to it. jacks vocals seem
very well-suited for this tune, but it will be great to see
what mr. schletty adds. the guitarwork totally drives this
thing-really great work tiler! you guys have created a very
full & soothing sound with the quiet harmonies & choice
of instruments. nice stuff [ Reply to This ]
I'm biased ok but. . . . &mdash 02/09/05 - 07:12:47 PM
Here is my take being in on this.
I really like the vocals, it has a kind of great nostalgia
feel. I am a very big fan of sounds that are
classics wether it be New Age, country, rock, pop,
classical etc.. And to be in on this was fun. I know it is
tough to be an engineer and musician. But I think points
should be leaning toward the music part with some
leniency on the sound production.
I did not do the beautiful lower guitar
notes that were illustrated at the ending. They were quite
tasty:) Close to country radio commercial ready.
Love that Hammond organ sound! Especially at the
beginning. In fact it really sets the tone after the intro :)
Jack, Richard - Like Mystified said, those harmonies were
nice!
Thanks for sharing.

Bill,
I'll take credit for the lower note guitar refrain at the end. But your guitar flourishes and Richard's harmonies brought this song to life. This was fun to do with you both. Maybe another down the line sometime....
thanks

Psycho-acoustics? &mdash 02/10/05 - 12:10:30 AM
Somehow the vocals sound completely out of tune to me,
but if I try to pinpoint what how and where, I don't find it.
Could it be that the vocals were recorded with a lower
pitch than that organ, maybe the guitar too?
Nice song, though. [ Reply to This ]
Psycho-acoustics? &mdash 02/10/05 - 12:24:07 AM
We'll take a good close look at pitch (esp. where you noted). I've decided to
take it into Logic Express to get this thing polished up. We appreciate all your
comments. Look for a future installment.

lush production &mdash 02/12/05 - 12:59:07 PM
Sounds like you'll put a lot of work into this. Overall I
really liked it. Only thing I didn't like was that sometimes
it seemed a ittle too busy. Perhaps too much organ and
guitar during the vocal parts. I really liked Richard's vocal
harmonies and the song itself is very nice. [ Reply to This ]
lush production &mdash 02/12/05 - 11:01:57 PM
Stay tuned. We are going to throw up another mix that has entirely new
vocals by Schletty, new Southern organ, and is mixed in Logic Express 7. We
tried to take some of the "busy-ness" out of it by bringing greater
clarity and separation to the parts.
Thanks for your comments.

you covered it! &mdash 02/15/05 - 01:37:23 PM
love the organ, simple drumming, like Johnny Cash or Dylan's Skyline, and nice guitar soloing. rough and natural. the flute-recorder solo seemed from a different something, would rather have heard more guitar an an organ solo, something more organic to the arrangement up to that point. but that this is a cover of an MJ tune is totally cool. [ Reply to This ]
you covered it! &mdash 02/15/05 - 04:27:06 PM
I plan on taking up your suggestion on the solo break... adding an organ to replace the flute. By the by, this version is the original recording of DLM. "rschletty's" version is the cover. His cover version is distinctly his sound so I asked him to post it under his name.
Actually the original goes back to my first macjams song last June. This version is a remake of that "demo" with the addition of rschletty and thetiler. Thanks for your comments. And I also think it is cool to have a song covered on macjams. This is such a great music community.
thanks,
