Description:
OK. Sorry. Another reworked version - this time of the first song I posted a couple of weeks back - but the first version was a mess. Thanks to various MJ members for invaluable advice/encouragement. Really. Whether I've actually learned anything from them is another matter...

Lyrics:

Mary was a till girl at the Woolworth's store
Got pregnant by the man next door
He was married to her best friend Sue
Sue don't speak to her no more

The man who lived next door split up with Sue
Mary thought that she stood half a chance
The man who lived next door just laughed at her
said I'm not lookin for romance

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in in the water tonight

Her friend Sue moved into a council flat
Mary walked down by the river side
She thought about the man who lived next door
She sat down on the bank and cried

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in in the water and die

Mary had a handsome boy and named him Sam
When Sam grew up he loved to drink and dance
Sam bet some money on a horse one day
He thought that he stood half a chance

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in in the water and die

Sam took the money and he bought a gun
Some nights he found it hard to sleep
Sometimes a river's just a shallow stream
Sometimes a river's dark and deep

The river is deep
The river is wide
Let's all jump in in the water and die

Sue became barmaid at the rose and crown
Mary is still working on the till
The man next door's next door to heaven now
Sam' has a cell in Pentonville

The river is deep etc.

Fantastic mandolin playing &mdash 02/09/05 - 05:25:36 PM
Good to hear the voice a bit higher in the mix this
time! You've carved out a unique style with these
songs, and that mandolin really is an asset. Great
stuff!

Better! &mdash 02/09/05 - 06:13:53 PM
There's an improvement here, and that's good. I've
marked this song as a favorite and downloaded it (mostly
out of fear that this will be the last version and that I'll
forget all about it if I don't). :-)

I like it, it's really interesting. The mandolin is really
refreshing.

I'm sure there's still more that can be done for the mix,
though. It's as if some potential is being unfulfilled, and
that's a shame. This song could really shine, but I'm not
able to help you with the details. I believe I know what
sounds good, but I don't know how to make it sound
better, sorry.

If ever you decide to keep working on it, I'll be a happy
camper.

Thanks so much for the encouragement, macapa. That's really kind. If you do
have any ideas about the mix, I'd be grateful.

One problem is timing; at a few stages the live instruments seem to rush
ahead of the loops. It's probably my own playing; I probably nead some
proper headphones to play along to rather than my earbuds. But I've also had
some issues with what someone here called "latency". After a few bars,
looped software intstument tracks seem to drift behind the beat. Has anyone
else had this?

great &mdash 02/09/05 - 06:25:34 PM
I really enjoyed this song... the music, the lyrics. You tell a good story and have an unique sound. Really like your style, rough bits and all.

great &mdash 02/10/05 - 03:18:51 AM
Coming from such a consummate songwriter as yourself, that's extremely
flattering. Thanks. Glad you can cope with the rough bits as, technically-
speaking, I lack fine sandpaper.

Good Lyrics &mdash 02/10/05 - 08:37:15 AM
Mando,

I like your Mandolin much more than your electric guitar. I
would either leave it off and have two mandolin tracks or
if you could get a good quality acoustic guitar. For my
taste, that would improve it a great deal. Otherwise it was
a fine well crafted song.

Oh yes latency &mdash 02/10/05 - 08:43:19 AM
Forgot to tell you that the latency can be caused by two
things. The interface - are you plugging a mic directly
into the computer or do you have a mixer or USB
interface? USB interface is usually the best to get rid of
latency.
The second would be ram. If you don't have enough ram
when recording that could also cause latency. Make sure
all of your other programs are off before you record.

Thanks.. I suspect it's a RAM thing.

Oh yes latency &mdash 02/10/05 - 02:46:02 PM
Sometimes I get latency from my M-Audio USB interface, and all I have to do is open the M-Audio pref pane and change a seeting, hit "apply", set it back, and hit "apply" again. It just bugs out sometims and "jiggling the switch" seems to fix it. If you ever have that problem that might work for you.

I'm going to try using "Latency Fixer" from <a href=http://

I'll let you know if it works.

Delightful &mdash 02/11/05 - 12:10:13 PM
Such a great tune, such life and delightful lightness. Great
use of different sounds, guitars, mandolin styles,
different amps. And your voice is so great for this. I really
like your harmonies. Man, do you play at pubs? This stuff
would draw them in, that's for sure.

Delightful &mdash 02/11/05 - 11:51:59 PM
Thanks so much. That's a great boost - coming from such an experienced
musician. I've never sung live and haven't performed since the days of playing
in sulky post-punk bands.

A fresh breath of beauty &mdash 02/14/05 - 12:34:16 PM
This track is full of life and gaity. The mandolin is marvy.
The guitar track...I think if you darken the tonality (not
change the amp setting or anything) but try to subdue its
presence a bit will balance things out a tad more evenly.

Your voice is perfect. Nice music all around...Punk huh?
who'd a guessed?

This is one of my favourite tracks since I've been listening to tunes on this site. I heard the earlier version too, and I'm glad it's getting great feedback.
I think the electric guitar doesn't add much, though. Treat yourself to a half-decent acoustic, as I think you've really earned it.

I really enjoyed listening to this. I've never heard anything quite like it,
and that's a good thing. Really love the arrangement. What a gem!
