Description

A few months back, Nat (strangedream) sent me a link to a Fiona Apple song, which ultimately became the inspiration for this piece. I sent Nat a rough version with just piano and she came back with this amazing song, and when I heard it I immediately knew we had something special.

I was very fortunate to be able to put together the same group that did "Better Off Broken". They are:

Natalie Scibetta (strangedream) - she wrote and sang the lyrics, and did all the harmonies. She also gave me lots of invaluable feedback during the mixing process. Nat also provided the song art. Nat is an amazing songwriter!

Chris Flynn (rok41) - Chris played bass - not just bass, but a 5 string bass (because he knows I LOVE those low D's!), and a fretless bass for the awesome bridge solo. Chris also routinely gives me very good and honest feedback during the mixing process. Many thanks to you, my friend!

Mike Watkins (kevmikwa) - Mike did an excellent job taking my conceptual midi drum track and translating it into an incredibly solid live drum performance. Mike also contributed some feedback during the mix process. Well done, amigo!

This has been a great year for collabs and music here at macjams. I am so grateful for the support I have received from my fellow macjammers, and for the friendships I have forged along the way. On behalf of Nat, Chris, Mike and myself, thank you so much for taking the time to stop by and listen. Please let us know what you think as well - feedback is always appreciated.

Is that a word? Well, it certainly describes you, Sig. Another word: effortless. Or at least it seems that way. You possess an unnatural skill for dreaming and then doing...you seem to be able to extract your dreams from your mind and make them reality flawlessly. I wish you could extract my dreams and do the same...that is what we are working towards, I suppose. Mike and Chris: Thanks so much for being a part of this. The song feels warm and pulsing with its own unique heartbeat due to the hard work that everyone has put into this project. I had fun. Lets do it again, boys.

	A lot to like here! Contemplative, moody feel. There are very interesting and memorable parts throughout the song that highlight your strong and complementary skills and styles. You should all be proud of another great song. It will fit well with Better Off Broken on your first album.

Every single note, every single second of this song is so carefully tailored ! Among others, it's an arrangement beauty, I love the piano part VERY much (among others :-)).

	Who's Gonna Love Me I like the piano and that wonderful bass progression at the start and when the drums come in and you get that sweet tone on that guitar. my two cents
Well, I absolutely LOVE the way this piece opens. The bass and drums are spot on with that great little syncopated piano riff. The vocals are awesome - my only critique is that they seem to be slightly heavy on the reverb compared to everything else in the song.

Sig, your string work in this is spectacular - may I suggest spreading them out in the panning a little bit? especially the higher strings. most listeners are going to be used to hearing those in their left ears, due to standard orchestral set-up. Regardless of *where* you put each section of strings, I think they could use a little more separation of panning to fill up the sound field. The balance on everything is just spectacular.

That big break into the piano solo and then guitar is just breathtaking. I'm going to say exactly the opposite of the vocals - maybe add a touch of reverb to the piano sample you are using.

The construction, structure, instrumentation, lyrics, etc. of the song are just beyond criticism. Perfect. You've got quite a band put together here.

Ah, the classic Sig ending. :) I love it (really I do!) except that final hit on the piano could have a little tail maybe? Adding reverb and/or pedal would help that. Just a slight overtone of sound to leave us with.

Anyway, Sig, this is fantastic, truly. When's the EP coming out? :D

perfect commercial rock pop tune. natalie sounds like the real deal as usual...although i wish she'd do more of 'her' and less of what she thinks she 'ought' to be sounding like.....because that 'commercial' sound is all about money yadda yadd. chris i love your bass as usual. the production on this is first rate.
sigmund i enjoyed the soloing because it was simple and sounded relaxed and effortless.

great tune and a wonderful arrangement Sig, great vocals too, I do love Natalie's voice.
All the instruments sound so well balanced in the mix, lots of space between them and it still sounds nice and full, just how it should be.
Excellent bass guitar from Chris and the fretless in the bridge is superb.
I also love the drums, great sound and feel that you can only get with a real drummer.
Your guitars, playing and tone are the icing on the cake for me and there's so much I love about this song, the piano........everything!
Excellent collab and very much enjoyed.

First and foremost, Nat, your voice sounds fabulous. I like when you project power through it and emphasize certain words with a slight growl. Very nice touch, this is certainly my favorite vocal from you thus far. Awesome lyrics too!

Chris, that bass is killer! You always shine, man! Mike, drums are always so crucial in collabs like these and you certainly brought it, terrific playing.

Sig, what can I say? You're a beast when it comes to these projects. I'm sure it took an incredible amount of time & skill to mix and master this. Not to mention your guitar & piano playing, which sounds awesome.

This is a collab made in heaven. Fab composition, and very well performed. The strings sounds great in here and adds to the sexiness of the mood. Your productions are sooooo good Sigmund!

I'm always impressed with how Mike manages to do his drumtracks this dynamic and well adapted to the feel and groove of the tunes he takes part in. Coupled with the steady foundation that Chris delivers on bass, it's solid as a rock!

The topping with Nat's beautiful voice makes this complete.

Excellent sound
Thanks for alerting me to this truly fine track. I'll give a go at a critique.

First, the mix over my laptop speakers was perfect. I listened in headphones too, and great there too. Drums sound fabulous in headphones, although the extreme L-R of the cymbals could be centered a bit more (especially the right crash & bell). Bass also sounds great, as do the vocals. Warm and round and full. The bass solo at 2:40 is really good, and the guitar lead that follows thunks and tears, all leading to a really nice piano transition into a smooth Santana-eqsue solo, exquisitely performed and arranged.

The instrumentation and arrangement is well balance, has really nice detail variations in the transitions, giving it a story telling feel and flow. All the performances are really good. My only critiques would be re: The end is the main part I couldn't buy into. Sounded like a piano loop getting cut off. It could end with an unresolved chord, like Blue by Joni Mitchell, but just repeating the intro lacked imagination and seemed too much like a loop (especially in this day and age). Also, the synth strings sound really good as backing chords in the chorus, etc. But the initial intro high violin line seems a tad too synthetic during that first verse in which they play. But the cellos (?) in the right ear are fab! I like the percussive cello fall you do right before the vocals return. Consider more of that, something that creates the mood of agitation and violent loneliness, less melodic statement, adding middle range continuum in the violins to introduce the synth strings more subtly during that verse, then bring the higher violins in before the chorus, leaving the rest of the arrangement as is. (Then again, if you were using real strings, you cd leave even the first part as is.) I personally like all the instrumental breaks, but it's not normal radio play arranging. I guess it all depends on your audience. Makes for great story telling, tho.

The lyrics aren't my kind of thing, stylistically. I really like the sound of them, the rhythms and internal rhymes, etc. The first verse is solid, obvious, general but concise; but what follows is harder to follow, and altho this could lend itself to multiple poetic interpretation, to me they lack the kind of edged anger and flash of violent emotion that the excellent performances imply. I'd prefer specific imagery that compels, focuses, shows more blood, as it were, more unique suicidal swinging-from-the-rafters desperation. If this is a song about a girl whose father died early, whose mother left her emotionally alone, and whose God is giving her a cold shoulder, and she is truly wondering if anyone will ever love her enough to stay forever, and is pleading for someone to hang her (great line, by the way), then I feel as if there is something missing, a missing image, a missing concrete metaphor, a need for one crystal clear moment of devastating poignancy. But, then again, I might be completely wrong about this. Lyricists like Poe and Ani diFranco always surprise with something truly specific to pierce through and wound. In this song, the singer makes you cry, not the lyrics. I'd prefer both to do it. "Leper queen to you" just sounds too 14 year old, in my ears. (Even tho Jesus loved lepers.) But I know more about musical theatre lyrics than this genre, so take this with a grain of salt.

I truly love the sound of this track. I dig the epic sweep, the dramatic emotion, the range and power of the arrangement. Excellently sung. Really great job. Thank you again for urging me to listen.

I'm glad that I came back to this one.

Sig- I love that sad guitar. Holy crap can you play that instrument.

I really love Nats vox on this song. She really tears it up. The vocals are spot on; one of the previous songs there was a touch of sibilance. Here it is perfect.

Chris rages on bass. Man I wish that I knew how to play like that. Envious!

Of course great drums.

Pro sounding performance and production. You guys should be proud of this one.

You've done it again...
I come here after not being around much and the first thing I see is this! Fantastic singing as usual from Natalie, but for me the highlights this time are the bass and guitar, which are world class expressive performances. I disagree about this being Nat's best performance; I go on about this a lot because I think too many singers neglect it, but the enunciation isn't as good as some of her other songs. If I need to read the lyrics to find out what they are then the singer isn't giving me the message, and I had to do this for a few parts of this song. Don't blur the consonants, spit them out! Still the voice is incredible, the song is epic, the production is close to perfect and everybody involved performs brilliantly.
