Blind Love (Seeing Heart) - Orchestral Version

Description
Back in June, I posted a little piano piece: Blind Love. I’d been composing it last spring, during the time our sweet old Boston Terrier, Waverly (now age 13.5) was having all kinds of ever worsening eye problems. We had some grueling months of surgeries and other treatments that were really difficult for him, all in an effort to save his vision, but ultimately his eyes became too diseased and had to be removed. As I was describing on the “Blind Love” song page last June, it was a very emotionally challenging time for all of us. The humans were heartbroken and the doggie was initially petrified in the sudden darkness. However, he actually adapted quite quickly to his new situation and we were so heartened by his willingness to keep trying.

And he continues to be such a trooper in his blindness, still taking a long walk most days. His circuit includes an off-leash romp in a large open area where he’s learned he can crank it up without fear of crashing into anything (talk about “running blind”!) Still though, blindness is challenging, and these 6 months have seen him really slowing down as he enters truly old age for his breed. He has been a remarkable and wonderful companion for all these years, and we are so grateful for every day that we still get to have him around.

It took a long time for me to start “hearing” the orchestration for this song. When I posted the piano solo in June, I assumed I would dive right into orchestrating, but it just wasn’t there for me. So we enjoyed a great summer of motorcycle trips, and I figured that in September, it would be there. But alas …. still nothing. I was starting to think this song was destined to forever remain as a solo piano piece only (not that there’s anything wrong with THAT), when suddenly in mid-October …… KA-BOOM! I couldn’t open Logic fast enough, and quickly entered that odd state, where composing takes precedence over many things that aren’t really that optional (like eating and sleeping). As most of you very well know, it’s a compelling state that is both joyous and maddening. The “composing fever” – how do we survive it? I’ve also been plagued as usual by a severe case of OCTD (Obsessive-Compulsive Tweak Disorder), so I feel fortunate to have this completed before Christmas!

The piano software here is the mighty Synthogy Ivory German Concert Grand II. Orchestral instruments are from the Miroslav Philharmonik, with a couple of odds and ends from the Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack. I played the piano part on my Kawai MP8, and everything else is penciled in Logic Express. I had such a great time doing this, I’m kind of sorry it’s over. I hope you enjoy this little orchestral ode to my sweet old doggie, and by extension, to all beloved pets everywhere!

***** Special thanks to Andrew (alackbass) for the late stage technical feedback, and showing me a cool new trick in Audacity. Also, thanks to Bryn (particledots) for experimenting with my final file in a couple of his (many) mastering programs. Although ultimately I decided I preferred the unmastered version, it was very helpful to get another set of experienced ears on my EQ and compression choices.

Very nice and melodic...
the opening " build " gives the feeling og a pooch running its head off...whatever its age or ability....yes there is a sweeping freeness....is that even a proper word or is it a new jarvoism ?....throughout this that speaks of pooches and kitties being there own true and naughty selves...all pets are naughty...it is their job description....mischief, mayhem and merriment so this does a fine job...great stuff !!

Chris...oh look firsties...

(and after firsties come fridies.....sorry)

Oh Karen, you are amazing!
This is such a wonderful, heartfelt, energetic, and uplifting tribute to your beloved pooch. It is also so good to hear, if not verbally, that you are coming to terms with Logic (well, except where you say you couldn't open Logic fast enough ;-) Brava! Lovely, lovely piece. Thanks, I took one.

Well, of course. ya know our pets are more than just pets... their family. Doggies are like that!
Love the classic Magnatone signature of counter-melody and dynamics. Calling in Andrew and Bryn is always a wise decision. My cat will be so jealous. I am going to have to borrow your timpani on a song or two. Love, love love the ending! Bravo! Standing "O"

Seems you have been as busy as Story! Very very nice piece you have here. I started in the symphony and played for years. But gave it up for what I do now. Its songs like this that make me wonder why I still play for the local symphony. Great piece Karen!

Blind Love
What a terrific composition this is, I loved it as a solo piece but this really encapsulates the theme and feel that you are conveying.I especially love the movement at 2.30...the whole thing really shines Kar, the build at 3.30 takes it over the top....wow!

Oy, Come to Dinner! (OCTD!)
Oh, the slow repeated "wait-for-it" fanfare at 2:40 was just wonderfully powerful, and perfectly placed... it was as if I could hear you saying "come on, Waverly, faster, faster, go!" So glad this bubbled up finally, I can see that the inspiration would be powerful enough to make you lose track of everything. But you captured a beauty. Very nicely done. I heard one little thing with the washing strings near the beginning, but then the tidal wave of joyous music swept away any critiques, and I could do nothing but go along for the ride. Excellent work!

I can't imagine
ever taking on something so involved.

Masterful control of the instruments and the dynamics. I loved the rather dramatic section around 2:30 that hits a low around 3:10 before resolving around 3:50. That really caught the mood of despair turning to hope and finally finding a comfortable place.

Lovely work Karen.

Cheers

Second sight.
The pooch adapted and you, out of pure love, put all of your emotions into your piano piece. I think it had to wait to be orchestrated until you were finally, at peace. Karen, this is definitely about freedom..from worry, suffering and pain and about freedom to live the best anyone can under whatever circumstances, by overcoming limitations until those are inconsequential. You and yours are Waverly's seeing eye people and with you in his corner, he is secure to run and doggie laugh. Triumph is inevitable when there is resolve and a reach for perfection. You joke, but if it is worth doing, it is worth doing well. And you have done exceedingly well. I love it, Karen. Be very proud. Thank you.

Joyful and poignant
The piano version was wonderful and this adds a new dimension. I'd say your fever was quite productive. A great tribute to Waverly and his adaptability.

sounds great, really nice orchestration. really like how you used the percussion too (perfectly placed triangle BTW). I love the image of Waverly running in the field while this is playing and he's actually seeing things in his mind while he runs. I'm starting to get choked up thinking about the little guy, so I will sign off. beautiful piece of music Karen.

Blind Love
This is truly an impressive performance Karen. This piece ebbs and flows like waves on the shore - building, peaking, crashing and receding, all in order to do it again. Your use of dynamics and tempo to make an emotional impact is awe inspiring - this may be your best yet, and that's saying something!

This is really really good! Totally enjoyed!

Sight
We see so little with our eyes
They do not see the warmth of a touch
They do not see the sounds of the birds on a quite spring day
They do not see the smell of flowers or of the damp earth
after a gentile rain

They do not see they joyousness in beautiful music
or the feelings which bring about tears
when reading a beautiful story of love

Our eyes see so little
Our hearts see so much

glad to hear Waverly is doing well. this is as fantastic as ever. great use of the low end of the orchestra. nice combination of solo instruments and full sections - especially love the pizzas. a very dramatic climax for a very little doggie! the ritards you use in several places seem a little bit abrupt to me, but I love the idea of them. gorgeous opening and closing. congratulations on another masterpiece!

Modulation
Hello Karen, dear! This sounds WONDERFUL (heavy on the joyous, lighter on the poignant, which I personally think is a much more human balance). Nevertheless, the heartbreak is not far off, and I truly feel for both the little guy and his sensitive guardians. Your orchestration is a real treat with its ebbs and rushing courses; how I'd love to be able to think like this!
Lovely, uplifting and rich. You are a gem!

(And I L O V E your modulation tweaking on those woodwinds!)

Much Love,

It's real orchestration...
Which is to say, it's composition that augments a composition; it's not thick, glorpy pads of strings and things fogging up the melody line...

All the lines seem to be doing things, and there's a nice sense of dance to it all, or maybe 'romp'. There's a an echo of that thing in life that is not stopped by the hard things...

And if my untrained ears are not mistaken, it's in 3/4 time, so you get extra points.

The sounds from the software seem pretty natural, too, and everything seems to have its own space. Nothing sounds as if different parts of my woofers are at war with each other...

Worth stopping in for....

I liked...
...the original solo piano score very much. This orchestration just takes it up a big notch and makes this simple number into a real orchestral, symphonic masterpiece. I especially like the pizz lower strings around 2:45-50 or so. You have conjured a beautiful hymn to wildlife, full of joy and tasteful exuberance. I love the finale with the big crescendo and then the gentle fall-away. ... ending on the subdominant...a masterful perception of the conclusion that leaves all of life open and unquestioning and hopeful. Beautiful work, Karen.

this is amazing Karen. I must admit I too (like Michael) felt compelled to thinking of this wonderful piece as an expression from Waverly's perspective: moments of fear and uncertainty of the unknown- building to an embracement of a new life and new found enjoyment of all that a pooch loves. Towards the end, I could see him running abound fearlessly in the open with new found confidence in his orientation. Wonderful.

Feeling your dog-love.

One thing I most admire in your playing/composing, is your use of dynamics; it adds so much to your compositions, giving it that human dimension, not usually felt on the digital side of things.

When you get the fever there is only one thing to do ... and you have brought Waverly to life for us with all his bounding about, enthusiasm, inquisitiveness, and loyalty. I love the varied places your melodies go, and it feels in the end like a great day out romping and resting with your dog. As an OCTD 12 step survivor, I know how hard it can be to say 'good enough', but really this is a grand piece and creates such a sense of life to it that we are instantly under your tuneful spell. A couple of radical suggestions, probably best ignored!
Karen, this is lovely, and very well orchestrated. I would not change anything.

I do have a suggestion for the next piano piece of yours that you choose to orchestrate, and that is to consider limiting the role of the piano, or (gasp!) even eliminating it. Why? Well, limiting the piano's role — having sections that have an orchestral focus, while the piano "sits out" — would make the piano all the more welcome when it returns, and vice-versa. This is the basic approach in a concerto, where there are solo piano sections, sections where the orchestra accompanies the piano, sections where the piano provides light accompaniment for the orchestra, and sections where the piano does not play but the orchestra does.

The (gasp again!) suggestion about eliminating the piano and making a purely orchestral version is based on composer's like Ravel who did this (many, possibly most, of his orchestral works started out as piano compositions, and the orchestrations are brilliant). This, I suspect, would be more challenging, but the value of this approach is that is compels a person to learn how to translate an idiomatic idea on the piano into one that is idiomatic for orchestra, and this is a useful skill to have in your bag of tricks.

That said, please ignore these suggestions if they don't strike your fancy, because the approach you currently have works great, and people love it!

I hope all is well with you and your loved ones (including pets, of course!), and I wish you all the best for the holidays! Cheers.

hi clark
thanks for this very detailed and thoughtful comment - this is why i always hope you'll make it over to a song of mine! you are not the first person to suggest limiting the piano, and having grown up practicing various concertos, i know how they are structured. i've never thought of what i'm doing as trying to be like a concerto - i've thought of it as orchestrating to a piano piece. that being said, i should at LEAST really TRY dropping the piano out in spots for the exact reason you said - to increase the variety and make the piano have a place, rather than to be the root. i SHOULD. thanks for the kick - i'll keep this in mind. your critique is invaluable to me. you're also one of the most hilarious people i know! happy holidays clark!

wow
Amazing orchestration, very lush sound. I like how it ebbs and flows and generally follows a satisfying arc.
I can't imagine being able to put something that big together. Yes, I imagine it is a good thing that you put it to bed before Xmas, unless you've already started something else that is... :)
Really enjoyed listening to it!

Thank You
What a touching story, it tells about how much we living creatures can stand, and also about how fantastic dogs are. Some dogs are so much love, they don't get bitter or have revenge feeling over things we do to them, like leaving them home alone. Sad yes, but as soon as we come home there is only the wildest happiness. Everything forgotten.

I am touched by your composition in honor of Waverly. A beautiful piece and so lovely orchestrated.

Seeing Heart
Awwww, this is so special!! I would love to meet this Waverly someday. He, and his love is priceless to you, I know (as I have a child/kitty of my own). I love the 2:50 mark...it is stunning!!

I love how your song tells this story, and the fact that it has nice, upbeat rhythms that portray his adaptation to the darkness he now has to live with - but Waverly IS a survivor!!

It truly is a happy ending! I love it.

One Hundred and seventy firsties!!!
Lol!!

First of all, I'm a big fan of songs written for blind dogs. Second of all, I'm a fan of emotionally challenging situations, like, blind love. I'm an expert in the field.

This is a fantastic little number you've hacked out here Karen! Lol! How do you know when to add a gigantic bell sound or an oboe at the precisely perfect moment? I guess you have to be a genius with friends that are geniuses that you consult with. Congrats!!

At 3:21ish, it gets really beautiful and strangely, my scrawny chihuahua rescue dog walked up to me and put his little scruffy, stinky, cheesy paw up on my leg and I looked down at him and said, "Skippy Jon Jones! Can't you see that daddy's working?!" So I sent him to his room with a handful of "nutritious all natural dog treats". Yup. He loves carmel coated popcorn. He was the ugliest, abusedest, scabbiest, maingiest scoundrel of a mutt I've ever seen in my life and when my wife brought him home, he hated everyone, barking and ferociously attacking everyone as if they were gonna kill him. He hasn't understood the concept of 'rescue' yet. But now, a few months later, he comes up and puts his scruffy paws up on me to see if I'll play with him. Awwww.... It's a different blind love, but your composition works for our special relationship.

Thanks Karen.

You're awesome. Me and the poochies thank you!!!

Bob

Karen - you're a great story teller, both in your words and on those black and white things you play with...8) i loved hearing you wait for inspiration - WHAT? NOT YET???? - then having it come to you. the flute is such a joyous voice in the midst of your lovely piano. nice little transition at 1:57 - you're so good at small but important details. yep, this piece runs blind, too - and it's a marvel to see where it goes. love the spaciousness to your compositions. Big Holiday Cheers to you, Sister! Anne

Wow. I have a special place in my heart for animals, and this story broke my heart, thinking about what poor Waverly experienced and how you suffered too because of it. And yet it is an uplifting story because all wounds heal in the end. The musical piece that was born of this trial is inspiring.

Holy cow! Or should I say holy terrier?

I too shy away from compression. It seems to distort things a bit. I say leave it be and turn up the volume a bit.

The orchestration is wonderfully done and very dramatic.

A marvelous piece of orchestration, Karen... complementing, rather than complicating the soundscape. This orchestration has given the track a very cinematic feel and any movie that explores the triumph of the spirit would find your composition a welcome companion. ;)

Evocative
Yes, it does create happy walkies in the mind. You know dogs live in a world of smells rather than sights, so Waverly probably doesn't miss his eyes as much as you or I. I know all about composing fever. While I enjoy it, it's a bit like playing Nintendo games - as rewarding as it is frustrating. I really enjoy the mixing and the solving of audio problems. Wish I had time and money to do a course, but that would lead to expensive equipment purchases, so best not. My last but one tune was dedicated to my calico cat, who was remarkably dog - like in her devotion. She was good at catching rats and snakes too. Sniffle. Anyway, a lovely piece, Ms Tone.

The comments on this post are longer than the Lord of the Rings trilogy!! And beautifully - lucky dog! Got his own symphony...not many humans have that honorable distinction.

Dog Song
A fitting tribute to a canine companion - beautifully conceived and deftly played.

I like that you impart a sense of celebration of life in your tribute to your dog (rather, say, than dwelling on the sad decline that has set in). That ebullience shines in your playing!

Regarding any feedback, I thought the last couple of notes were a little soft after the brio of the piece .. that instead of tapering off to a single note .. perhaps it should end on a firm, life-affirming (though not necessarily loud) chord?

Great posting!
