Description:
Ok macjams, need all y'all's help on this one. Originally written in the previous century this is the third iteration of this song. I'm am about to embark on the fourth iteration and thought I'd get your thoughts before i did. I would appreciate any and all thoughts, opinions, suggestions, critcisms etc.

Lyrics:
My Religion
©1997 Ray Kainz/Sue Ann Kainz

When I looked into your eyes
I thought I saw the flame
your kissed baptized me
and at your feet I prayed

Your body was my alter
were I worshiped every night
my faith was without falter
my will without a fight

You were my religion cross myself three times
Your desires were the trinity and your commands my wine
You were my religion but I'm through with you amen
no more of you amen

My teardrops make a rosary
a prayer as each one falls
no more genuflection
at the slightest of your calls

cuz I don't need your liturgy
to tell me that I'm wrong
confession is my guitar
forgiveness is the song
I don't need your hymnal
to follow when I sing
no I don't need you anymore
this angel's taking wing

You were my religion cross myself three times
Your desires were the trinity and your commands my wine
You were my religion full of false prophetic talk
You were my religion gonna pick up my matt and walk
cuz You were my religion but I'm through with you amen
no more of you amen

I like the sound... &mdash 02/10/05 - 01:58:30 PM

of this song. All your music to my ear has a professional flavor, as does this tune. As to suggestions, one right off the bat comes to me as I listen. The concept and overall lyrics are good. The religious metaphors and allusions are a unique approach to the man-woman relationship but here seem repetively over done. Like getting hit over the head (just a bit!). I think the singer's lament and declaration concering his woman would be more effective with a subtler approach (fewer direct metaphors).

This input is worth no more than 2 cents from this novice lyricist. :-) Again, good song!

Excellent &mdash 02/10/05 - 02:43:41 PM
Vocals, instruments, production - all excellent. Pleasantly
surprised by the instrumental break 2/3 of the way
through.

solid &mdash 02/10/05 - 02:59:15 PM
Great production. Pro sound. Everything sounds really good. While I'm sure that there's always room for improvement, I can't think of anything in particular that needs it. I suppose that I agree with Dadai that some of the metaphores could be a little less direct; that might be better, but still good as is.

sweet! &mdash 02/10/05 - 03:35:58 PM
immediately catchy and interesting. i really enjoy the
scratchy funky guitar sound. good song. good choice
of sounds, i especially like the bridges in the song,
they make for a good resolution into the chorus.very
nicely put toghether. well done.

Good but not quite right &mdash 02/10/05 - 06:06:29 PM
Tip-top production and playing as ever but
something doesn't quite work for me. Not quite sure
what it is though. Maybe it needs more musical
oomph, if you know what I mean. And I agree with
previous MacJammers about the metaphors being a
bit over-done.

Good but not quite right &mdash 02/13/05 - 08:01:43 AM
Looks like I'm in a minority with my thoughts about more musical oomph
being required. I'll go and sit in the corner then…

This is nice &mdash 02/10/05 - 07:27:49 PM
Very interesting...like how the chorus is a little harder
than the verse. I agree with Mungo on the instrumental
interlude...nice. Nice jazzy guitar licks at the end and a
very cool singing voice! I'm jealous...you can do it all.

GOOD FUNKY SOUNDS IN THE GUITAR AND VERY GOOD
SONG

What I really like about this song &mdash 02/11/05 - 08:05:09 AM
is the extremely funky guitar. Like some of the previous
posts, I am not sure all of the religious imagery works for
me, or that it all makes sense--desires as trinity,
commands as wine, etc.

But it's still a funky tune!

sexy Catholic love &mdash 02/11/05 - 09:24:02 AM
Great pro track, excellent sounds, playing, absolutely
tight, great singing, great playing. That chimes entrance
is too sudden maybe and sounded like an edit/cut to me,
but I love the idea behind it. Your separate of sounds,
mixing, pacing, and mastering is fantastic. The funky
aspects drive it forward, but the rock style gives it weight
and substance. I love the song art. Cool sexy Catholic
love song lyrics full of great ironic textures, but I get what
Dadai says about repeating the word Religion so often.
Just love the sound you get and the balanced
arrangement.

Diggin, diggin', diggin' it! &mdash 02/11/05 - 08:03:04 PM
This song just plain works for me from start to finish. I
love the sophisticated style it has, but stays loose and
rockin' with a bit o' the funk!

Hmmm... &mdash 02/12/05 - 12:24:36 AM
Even though I loathe religion, I found the lyrics offensive
and couldn't get past them to listen to the tune. But I'm
way in the minority. Ignore me.

one of the best &mdash 02/12/05 - 08:31:29 AM
one of the best tracks on this site. a real money maker. mainstream yet with inventive moments, and you doubled voice rocks. you could sing religion to me as many times as you want... PUT OUT YOUR CD SOON! (that chime entrance Tobin mentioned doesn't mix as well , but everything else is PERFECT)

Yes I like it &mdash 02/12/05 - 08:43:24 AM

First of all I like the lyrics — wish I could make poetry like
that — and the content; reminds me of how easy it is in
this world to make idols and pick up gurus and how times
of love affairs are especially susceptible, with acompaning
dangers of devastating illusion. (Dont know if that is what
the song is about, it is the way i associate when listening).

Finally the music is relly tight and professional to my ears.

Oh YEA! You've nailed it! &mdash 02/12/05 - 05:07:22 PM
Great production, excellent song writing and playing.
This is on my IPod....like now! This song is just right to
me from beginning to end....nice nice balance...the only
thing I hear is the chimes come in a tad strong but are
perfectly balanced once there....man, editing is like hours
and hours isn't it.

Fabulous job...made my day!

This is fantastic, really funky. You have a superb voice. I
really like the overall feel of this song. I keep playing it.

Funkified... &mdash 02/16/05 - 06:29:56 AM
song with great timing, production and writing. I kept
wanting to hear the vocals sustained more on the last
word of each verse. Diggin' the pos bass...the
drums...guitar. The direction it goes at the bridge seems a
bit strange. Not that it's a bad thing. Just depends on taste
I guess. It was edgy and raw and bridged to something a
tad too sweet for me. Still, even an unfinished song of
yours is better than 80% of the songs I hear. I'll reserve
vote for the final version. Thx for
sharing.

Outstanding. &mdash 02/16/05 - 07:22:08 AM
This is truly a professional sounding track. Your vocals are
clean and defined and the story enticing and
interesting(open to intrepretation). The performance is
firts rate. This is one of the most polished things I have
heard here at Macjams!

professional! &mdash 02/16/05 - 09:53:46 AM
All's been said already, so I won't belabor the religious
aspects.

I particularly liked the way you built up the song from the
beginning. Very good pacing of gradually increasing
intensity.

I would say, now that the song is nearly finished playing,
that somehow this pacing lost a bit of momentum in the
second half of the song. Almost like....it reached a peak
and then didn't know where to go from there. And the
instrumental ending was sort of anti-climatic.

Otherwise, this is certainly a very well-conceived and
produced tune, professional in every way. Some of the
textures and little guitar riffs remind me of Steely Dan.
Now THAT group sure had extremely high production and
performance values! You're in good company.

Mitchell Froom! &mdash 02/16/05 - 05:07:00 PM
Sounds very much like a Mitch Froom production of a
Kevin Gilbert song.

There's a certain "demo-y" quality that I find alternately
right and wrong. At times it's murky and then there's that
crystal clear guitar sound. The vocals sound great too.
Very Froom.

Great instrumental break. I LIKE that changeup that Tobin
didn't, go figure . . .

Yes, you go a little too far with the religious content. Too
cute. The line you cross is a small one, but it's like the 3
joke rule, you know?

Fantastic song overall.

You are my favorite MacJams musician.

I'm a true believer &mdash 02/16/05 - 05:34:40 PM
This tune rocks in every way. The lyrics are consistent
throughout. Reminds me of some of that overwrought
eighties stuff with new century flavorings. The only
quibble I have is that the song kind of peters out oat the
end. There's such a strong, funky beat that the guitar
notes just kind of . . . stop. Maybe add some kind of
supporting sound there, just on those last two notes. A
synth chord? Maybe bass and drums? But something to
really kick the door shut.

Best of the best... &mdash 03/10/05 - 03:00:58 PM
You are so ready to be signed. You and mars are the two "most likely to ink a record deal" on MacJams,IMHO. If you haven't already. Consistent professional production quality is one standard you set around here. You have a raw edge that sounds anything but computer generated. It's "from the gut". And it bleeds cool rebel. Yeah, sometimes, for me, your writing lacks the attack that i think you are vocally capable of. Almost like it'd be cool to hear a some lyrical risks taken...or exploration. But, take my critique with a grain of salt. Cuz i'm nowhere near your league as a musician. Great song. Thx for sharing it here. 4 x 10

still very fresh! &mdash 03/17/05 - 04:03:48 PM
written in the previous century? wow! still sounds very
fresh! reminds me of Lenny Kravitz. awesome! if you
want to update the song, id have the rhythm tracks
updated. but thats just a minor update. the song is still
very strong i reckon.

uniqueness. I really like your style.
