Description
Carol of the Bells, as it is known today, is based on a traditional Ukrainian New Years carol, celebrating the coming year's bounty. The melody was given English lyrics in the early 20th Century and is primarily known as a Christmas carol.

Shchedrky, the Ukrainian word for bountiful, is a shchedrivka, or New Years carol. Shchedry Vechir, the original melody for Carol of the Bells, is a folk song about a swallow flying into a home on New Year's day and singing of the plentiful bounty of the coming year.

The first part of the tune is the traditional Carol of the Bells, the second part is based on Shchedry Vechir. The lyrics and melody of Shchedryk are original with the lyrics very loosely based on the lyrics of Shchedry Vechir.

Lyrics
Carol of the Bells/Shchedryk

Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away.

Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,

Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all caroling.

One seems to hear,
words of good cheer,
from everywhere,
filling the air.

Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,

Gaily they ring,
while people sing,
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here.

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,

On on they send,
on without end,
their joyful tone,
to every home.’

Ding dong ding dong... dong!

Shchedryk

Welcome little swallow
into our winter home
rest your wings by our fire
on this new year’s day

Come and sit
at our table
Share our bounty
on this new year

The ewes are nestling
the lambs have been born
our fields were heavy
with grain

My beautiful wife
my healthy young son
a prosperous
season for all

So when you are warmed
then fly, little bird
and bring us good fortune
next year

oh yes... shchedrykova
beautifully done... crisp and languid :-)

During my obsessive research on this tune years ago, I found a delightful bit of "lost in translation"... the lyric where the swallow explains that the farmer "has a beautiful wife"... the original Ukrainian lyrics literally translate to "your wife has dark eyebrows", which was considered beautiful. I've always loved little things like that.

Anyway, my wifes and my favorite New Years Carol, and you have created a richly hued, unique and warm version of this, very nice work on the arrangement, the musicianship, singing, and mix. Sounds spectacular! May the sun return in the Spring!

The Kindness of Dragons
As the snows of the new year fell
a dragon wandered
until the cold
brought him to the ground.

From a small home nearby
came the smell of food,
the sound of laughter,
and the light of a fire.

As the dragon approached,
he changed into a ragged wanderer.
"Please Master," said the dragon,
"May I come in and get warm."

The Master of the house smiled
and brought the wanderer
into his home.
"All that we have is yours."

That night, the dragon was warm
his belly was full
his head lay on a soft pillow
as he slept by the fire

When he awoke
the man and his family
again brought him
to their table

Asked why
this man and his family
showed such kindness
to a stranger

The man said:
"We have had a bountiful year
and, in gratitude we will share that bounty
to all in need."

The dragon was taken aback
by such kindness
"But what if your crops should fail?
If your animals die?"

"What if illness strikes?
Plague? Pestilence? Hunger?
Should you not save the things you have
until they are needed?"

The man smiled. "They are needed now.
You were cold. Now you're warm
You were hungry. Now you're fed.
And you have a home until you need it no more."

The wanderer stood
and walked to the door.
He stepped into the cold
and became a dragon once again

As the master of the house
looked in amazement
the dragon spread
his magnificent wings

"I thank you for your kindness.
As long as the air
is beneath my wings
you shall never want."

"You shall never know hunger
or sickness or poverty
as long as you show kindness to others
as you have shown to me."

The Master of the house promised
and both man and dragon
were as good as their word
for many long years to come

I wasn't aware of the Ukrainian Lyric, though I knew the tune came from there. Beautiful arrangement and performance. This goes on the playlist for Christmas morning.

Cool Take!
Was hoping to hear some Christmas music just like this, thanks so much for posting! This is my wife's favorite carol, and your take has a nice blend of new age luminance, and an ominous undertone... I like the combination of the two songs, it's a perfect fit!
