Button Up Your Overcoat

Description
Previously unreleased recording I made with Francine DuBois* and the Groove Merchants back in 1940 which was recently discovered in the Tin-Tone Studios vaults by some researcher looking for an old album entitled "The Blob Sings the Hits of Petulia Clark". While we're not there yet, I always think this makes a good song for the New Year. Yup, it's another one of my depressing, self-indulgent weepies again!

Thanks again and hope your week is off to a sensational start!

Michael

* Real name: Esther Cohen.
"Button Up Your Overcoat" was written by Ampico J. Steinway and Samuel G. Foonman
Accompaniment: Some me on the piano, some of a public domain MIDI
Vocal: Junior Samples, Sr.

About this recording: Actually, anytime I use the old record effect it's to cover my infernal sinus problems (this is a Routine #76 for those keeping track of these things)

Lyrics
Button up your overcoat,
When the wind is free,
Take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!

Eat an apple every day,
Get to bed by three,
Oh, take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!

Be careful crossing streets, ooh-ooh,
Cut out sweets, ooh-ooh,
Lay off meat, ooh-ooh,
You'll get a pain and ruin your tum-tum!

Wear your flannel underwear,
When you climb a tree,
Oh, take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!

Button up your overcoat,
When the wind is free,
Oh, take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!
Boop-boop-a-doop!

When you sass a traffic cop,
Use diplomacy;
Just take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!

Beware of frozen ponds, ooh-ooh,
Stocks and bonds, ooh-ooh,
Peroxide blondes, ooh-ooh,
You'll get a pain and ruin your bankroll!

Keep the spoon out of your cup,
When you're drinking tea,
Oh, take good care of yourself,
You belong to me!

MJs favorite whack job strikes again
Is any of the above description for real Michael, or is every word you write just for fun? I wonder if liberties have been taken with the original lyrics coz I'm sure I remember 'em different. No matter, please pass along to the senior Junior that he's done a swell job on this, as usual, in spite of his infernals, and my personal wishes for an absolutely wonderful holiday. Cheers.

Thanks very much Richard
Oh, only slight liberties were taken, but the set of lyrics I chose were the ones Helen Kane (Betty Boop) used--I came across quite a number of variations while meandering around on the web! I know Junior will be just busting out of his overalls when he hears of your very kind words (er, well, actually, I think he's close to that point anyway--he's been on a pork chop and vanilla soda diet for the past few weeks!) Take care now and my sincerest wishes to you and yours for a wonderful and memorable Christmas Richard! Michael

LOL!!!
i'm going to crack up all night at your song description!!! hey - that piano - ooh! (you're SUCH an awesome pianist!) and then there's that silky voice of yours - i hear no evidence of sinus problems, or any other problems - this just sounds fabulous! LOL - and love your humorous side comments! cool old record effect. great job michael - enjoyed from start to finish!

Thanks Karen!
Yeah, that happens every time I post something when I'm somewhat zombified from lack of sleep! Lots of times I have more fun posting the thing than the actual song itself! You are much too kind; some of the piano was there already, but I added a few bits of business in there to punch it up a bit (of course, only after changing the key to C--gotta love being able to transpose with the click of a key, I must say! You can kind of hear what I added because the piano sounds a bit shallow or something--couldn't get that to match just right) Happy to hear from you--and you take good care now! Michael

Actually, I have Mr. M working on a much better arrangement than this thing (I'm not saying my playing on this one helped it any but the file itself was pretty thin!) Thanks again Philip and appreciated hearing from ya! Keep up the high class work you do! Michael

Love it.
Talent like yours is rare. Junior Samples, Senior has once again, pulled a rabbit out of his hat. Funny asides. You've so many voices but just one great big heart. Thank you Michael and all the rest of you.

Hey there Chris!
Oh no, what I put up here is in E-flat--I merely transposed it down to C to make playing with it easier than transposed it back up to E-flat, which is an easier key for me to sing (I'd still like to hear you though!) Thanks again my fellow madman! Take care Chris, Michael

Button up
Ah the old routine 76 again. I misread and thought that that was avoiding overdue tax bills by pretending to be a member of the Danish consulate disguised as a bellhop, but that's routine 77 of course. Easy mistake to make. I'm sure my mum has an original of this from back in the day, as I have visions of her cleaning with this on in the background. Must ask her. So, thanks for pulling up that memory for me! Love that crackle! And delightful to hear that piano - that keyboard's certainly getting a good workout these days.. great to hear it. "Forget those bimbos!" I can almost hear coming from the dulcet tones of a certain young lady we know from Brooklyn... Look forward to the autobiography, available in all good bookshops I'm sure! I shall reserve my copy before the rush (I prefer the rare, unsigned copies!)

Great stuff mate. Good on ya.

Great song and stellar vocal. Can't really tell the difference between the piano samples and your tracks, so kudos on closely emulating the style of the samples. Have a Merry Christmas my friend!

The disasters of love
If anything dates this songs it's probably the line "Wear your flannel underwear/When you climb a tree." That seems so yesteryear : )

Still, it's a clever idea for a song: come up with a string of disasters to be avoided so love can flourish.

I only had a passing acquaintance with this song, so it's nice to hear it as a complete work … although it sounds as if countless variations abound.
