Description
This one has been sitting around for a while. I finally got some satisfactory vocals down for it, so I figured...why not?

Lyrics
The Hills Last Night

You came from the hills last night and told me you’d been born,
Smiles tattered, torn,
Skin lathered, worn,
Breath pumped in steam from bodies that you hadn’t time to mourn.

You came from the hills last night with birds still in your eyes,
Your vine-layered thighs,
Your migrant cries,
You carved yourself from moss to travel iridescent skies.

You have been battered by the hoarfrost,
Cajoled to foray into rain,
You have been battered into your love,
Distended by the vacant plains.
Your heart will molt its coats by morning,
A voiceless autumn in your ear,
These hooded cities been contorting
Round the contours of your fears – I’m crying; you won’t ever come back.

You came from the hills with olive leaves caught on your clothes,
Fed fresh from snows,
Aflood with crows –
You paced the foothills endlessly, mapped winter as it rose.

You came from the hills last night and painted what you saw:
The land rubbed raw,
Its listless jaws:
You laid your body in its ruts and melted with the thaw.

By far your best melodic theme on the guitar. I like the harmonica. I would have liked to hear more from it. Of course I always enjoy your lyrics.

this was
an odd melody for a richter tuned harmonica. Aside from that short melody that I was playing was really the only interesting thing I could come up with on the G harp (I laid down the soundbed for this a while ago, though...so you never know). As always, thanks so much for the listen and kind words!

Brilliant Ben. I love hearing your harmonica playing - really your strongest suit, although you bend a mean lyric too of course. Cracking stuff! I liked "These hooded cities" especially.

hi ben - you have so totally won me over! your skills improve with each post - this seems like your strongest guitar work to date; harp is really great in this song; your vocals have improved so much in the last year, and your lyrics continue to make my jaw drop. you're really coming into your own - you can get real critiques from the people here who make songs in this genre - i'll just tell you i enjoyed this immensely, and i'd D/L it if that option were available.

Very good song Ben
I concur with the jury here; very melodic and lingers on the ear for quite a long time after listening (a good sign!) I think you did a nice job with the vocal and it's fine as is, but I wonder how this would go over with a lighter, airy delivery--this piece has such a lovely ethereal quality to it and maybe a softer vocal (female singer maybe?) might work even better for this particular song. Overall, fine work and hope you don't mind my suggestion! Thanks for sharing this, Michael

The Hills...
I like this...very folky...like I said in chat, a cross between Violent Femmes and Neil Young

Like the guitar riff that starts and follows through tune. Harp is sounding good. Nice vocals and strong poetic lyrics. More harmonica!!!
Guitar reminds me a little of Bruce Cockburn.
Cool tune!

Interesting
and quirky; reminds me at times of Jethro Tull, that complex, folky, individual sound.

Complex lyric, too. Sort of song that grows with each listen.

Enjoyed it. Intrigued.

you got me
hooked right away! :-)
cool guitarwork and the harmonica works good.
With your vocals it has an oldschool vibe, which is a good thing in my book :-)
Enjoyed!

Your guitar work is getting a lot better! Strong lyrics and vocals sound pretty good. Harp is a nice flavor.

What a lovely tone
and melody from the guitar. You played the hell of the harmonica, too. You have a world weary style of singing. And you have a way with metaphor. Thanks.

Hi Ben
Love your lyrics - they are (to me) among the most interesting at MJ. Somehow you say a lot, but mainly by developing a mood - I like that! I like the guitar and the harp, and your vocals are perfect for your words. Not crazy about the tempo change - the 3/4 (?6/8 - I never was good at this stuff!) is excellent, but it kind of breaks the mood when you change to 4/4. The only other nit is a little clipping (mainly on the vocal) near the end.
Overall, it's a very cool piece.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Nice guitar tones.......
and the harp reminds me that I have not broken mine out for a wail....I mean a while...well both really.....theres some nice chops on the guitar and it is well recoreded ...I always manage to lose the dynamics of the acoustic.......I am not sure about the vocals...but that is probably just me being a relatively old fart.....I think I get where it is coming from...but hey the rest is great and even at the end i am getting the vox more....so where the download at !?

Lovely tone
The acoustic sounds excellent.

Lyrics are very good and the phrasing really suits the backing as it cuts across the rhythm. Very clever!

Cheers

drone
nice guitar and harp work. This a neat song that has a drone effect, but your vocal melody, harp and lead guitar parts round it out nicely.

hi ben
there's something far-eastern about this one....until the harmonica comes in of course. actually that's very good harmonica.
the transition into the strumming third section could have been smoother.
i really like this one ben......especially the instrumental sections. sometimes you cram in too much lyrically.
i really laughed at the ending.....it was like you saw something out of the window and drifted off with your thoughts.....into the ether.....like you didn't give a damn about any of it. that tickled me.

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
