Lyrics
You came here grinning
Like a gash in clay.

You awoke in
Morning’s throat –
The rivers choked
And you were broke,
You scraped the sky from blushing oak,
Drew squatting woodlands stroke by stroke.

You landed like lightning
Frayed from flight and smog,

Forehead warm,
Your palette torn –
You came alone,
All bruised from home,
You found a perch of brown-flecked stone
And huddled small against the storm.

Opened bare to sallow air, the caves that hold you swallow me,
And in gaunt prose, those circus throes that wrack you seek to hollow me –
They’ll fell you worn, like sodden corn, so when I go don’t follow me.

You courted silence
Like a noble wrapped in lace.

Transfixed by sand,
You tore the land,
And no command
Could stay your hand,
No law you’d ever understand:
The hills loomed larger as you ran.

You shrunk into new bodies,
Like a shadow playing dead.

You willed the fields
To birth their yield,
You chained your zeal,
Its sins all sealed,
You bore the dead out on their shields,
You shored the cities till they healed.

A spring long dead now dusts your head with soil, and you won’t call to me,
Like a thief drawn, awaiting dawn, I yearn for your awakening –
They’ll fell you worn, like sodden corn, so when I go don’t follow me.

Especially
Like the guitar, the vocals have a nice laid back feel to them. You have great vocal tone. The song reminds me a bit of early Led Zep. I thuroughly enjoyed it.

I really like the delta blues meets central Asia vibe of the guitar part. I think that has a lot to do with the tuning you're using. I really like the song form, particularly the structure of the verses. I really enjoyed the guitar playing and well recorded guitar sound. The quality of the whole recording is quite good. Did I mention the lyrics? As always, they set you apart!

You have
a languorous tone like bluegrass singers have. That's very interesting. Love your unique poetry. Thanks.

Real nice sound with that capo on and that open tuning. Strong delivery of your very poetic lyrics. I like the pure, realness of this tune. Nice work!

Good piece Ben
Only thing I missed is ahook. Like a chorus or something. A repeated theme? Otherwise I like it!

i'm always amazed how you manage to sound like the genuine article from a time way before you were born. lovely guitar work...and nobody writes lyrics as profound and complex as yours. excellent stuff.....loved the outro. i guess all you need to do is go and perform and the rest will follow. i'll manage you this side of the atlantic ;)

First of all, what a cool tuning. Like what you do with it, too. You've turned into a solid rhythm player, accompanying yourself effectively.
Interesting lyric as always. Effective and tuneful singing, too. Fun to watch you develop your own style and grow as a player and writer!

Hey tf I like your song. I like the way your words are sparse and the beginning of a verse and then a flurry of words, this works very well. I would like to see the song shortened just a bit though since it's just guitar and vocal.

Unique
Nice work, Ben. The Appalachian style tuning really supports your vocal work on this song and the intriguing lyrics suit the mood you develop. Unique and musically very interesting. Thanks, Peter.

I always enjoy your lyrics Ben
........ and the rest of your music too of course, but the words always grab me first. An advantage of arriving very late for a listen (I'm trying to catch up) is that I get to read what everyone else says, and they've covered all the comments I was going to make. A bit long, but enjoyable nontheless.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
