Description:
This is a third version of 'On and On.' The first two can be found on TheTiler's page.
In this one, the song is sung from the perspective of a young woman who has seen her beloved go off to war (WWII), only to have him later reported as missing.

In approaching this song, I wanted to follow the steady clip of the guitar and still evoke the sorrow of the woman whose beloved is lost. The close harmonies are not only meant to be reminiscent of a lament, but to sound like a train's mournful whistle as the last car disappears from sight.

Much thanks goes to TheTiler for letting me join in collaboration once again and being able to set his beautiful song to harmonies!

Lyrics:

I remember him riding off in that silvery train.
He turned and looked out the window at me, waving goodbye .
Farmland cows in their breezy fields
A distant setting for that lonely train
As it took him away from view.

He was not found.
There was no clue…
There is no clue.

CHORUS: On and on, on and on, on and on he went
Never to come back.

Though they were all dressed the same,
There is one who will always
Be my own in my heart.
Though he’s gone, we will never part.

CHORUS: On and on, on and on, on and on he went to a place
Never to come back

The notices were such a surprise.
I’ll always remember the tears on his face
As we had one last, brief kiss
That image I’ll always miss
I’ll always miss….

Thanks for the comments about the guitar work. I sure can't say I deserve
much credit for her beautiful singing on the song. But I know by Ichating
with her that she started singing at an early age.
She must have wonderful parents to have such a great talented singer.

Singing I think is the highest form of music. The singing should take center
stage. Mystified shines very brightly on this one I think. I am very glad I
had the opportunity to collaborat with her. Her type of style, lyrics,
harmonizations have so much to offer the world. I hope she feels that she
achieved this and I am sure that her other music will be impressive as well.

I know there is one other one that she is working on that I will be there to
give it all the support I can possibly give.

Crystalline trio &mdash 02/14/05 - 08:41:34 AM
You guys make such a wonderful duo. Or trio, since
Mystified is times two with her wonderful harmonies. I like
the sense of free form, breaking out of the normal folk
style, to the melody. It harkens back to the storytelling
aspect of the genre, the courage to add a vocal cadenza
when the emotions require. Excellent sound, performance,
setting for these lyrics.

Thank you for listening, and for your kind words, Tobin.
As writing is one of my *other* hobbies, I appreciate that you heard that 'storytelling' aspect. I purposely sang the words in a free-form style, giving them greater 'weight' than a strict timing would allow--much like a recitative in an aria allows the same.

I hope that Mystified receives plenty of opportunity to display her great
talents. It wouldn't be fair to just confine her to just guitar (what I do). It
would be interesting using her great talents of harmonizations on piano and
other instruments. She IS such a great addition to the MJ community.

Thanks for the comment about my guitar playing.

Stunning guitar work. I'm always impressed Tiler. My
only complaint is that you seem to have a hard time
keeping up at times Mystified, like when you sing "window
at me", with that ironed out you'd be as close to
perfection as humanly possible.

This is a wonderful song, beautifully sung close
harmonies, sweet vocal quality and the guitar
accompaniment is perfect.

The overall treatment of this song reminds me of Joan
Baez's "Diamonds and Rust", but this is a more upbeat
version.

I loved the soaring vocal variations at the end.

Beautiful. Just beautiful.

Thank you, Cameron. Yes, the guitar accompaniment is perfect. It was clear,
after listening to the instrumental track (and a sample vocal track guiding me
as to the basic melody) and looking over the lyrics that TheTiler had sent,
that I wanted to come up with harmonies that expressed the sadness of the
message without having too many layers of them and keeping a somewhat
'transparent' quality overall.

I don't think If I searched all over the internet If I could of been so blessed
than have Mystified sing this. Her wonderful talent with harmonization is just
wonderful for me to behold. So sweet, this song really reminds me of a
soldier going off to war and the sadness of leaving a special someone behind.
To me she really pulled it off big time!

"Mystified" really sets a great example of what a folk artist should be like. To
me she is a real partaker in a special modern movement to put folk back to
were it used to be as a leading high class music venue.

She is a real class person, and sets a very high standard and is a good
example of how collaborations should be. I really have learned allot from this
special lady.
As much as she may think that she benefited from what I do. I really have
grown to better understand about collaborations because I am so new to this
in an online setting.

Thanks Mystified for putting up with me :)

Your vocals (lead and harmonies) are right in there with the best of female folk... Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, etc. I just love listening to you. Great to have a tiler handy to play a little guitar to back you up, isn't it?

I hadn't caught this at first, and now I'm catching up. The comment noting the Dar Williams quality to this seems to be right on, as there's a distinctive phrasing to this. The original tiler version is really nice, and comparing the two is quite interesting as this has quite different lyrics and the original studio version has an almost poppy quality to it... This version is extremely poignant, probably due in part to the freely expressed vocals. A Beauty!

Thank you.
I've always been interested in different interpretations, and it was great that I
could put my own vocal interpretation to this song. I didn't actually listen to
the first version until I had laid out the harmonies on four 'draft' tracks. I later
cut one layer of harmonies to what you hear on this final version.

Because Mystified's voice is so lyrical and rich with harmonization's. If was
very inspiring to blow up the original tune and bring out the great flavor of
Mystified's singing and bring in a real story that listener's can appreciate. At
least I think of it in that way.

MIA &mdash 02/15/05 - 11:20:45 AM
The music and the singing are beautiful in the extreme.

I have a couple of thoughts on the lyrics, for what it's worth. Feel free to ignore them.

The second verse opens with a distinct image of many identically uniformed soldiers, but it doesn't exploit the thought, other than to use the word "one" as compared to many. Maybe something as simple as "Though they were all dressed the same/There is one who will always stand out in my heart" would complete the conceit (especially since soldiers are know for spending a lot of their time standing at attention).

The final verse opens with the surprise notices that have no context. I'm guessing this refers to multiple letters informing of his missing in action status, but the only reason I think that is because it was mentioned in the liner notes. In the context of the song, with most of the action taking place on the platform during the act of saying goodbye, the surprise notices would more likely be the orders to report for duty. Either way, I'd suggest the notices are not needed, for two reasons. 1) it somewhat muddies the idea that the singer has "no clue" as to what happened and 2) because notices really have nothing to do with the rest of the verse, which dwells on the physical aspects of loss (the tears, the face, the kiss). The thought that jumped into my head for an opening was "I miss the action in his eyes," but that might be a little overt in its reference to MIA.

Thanks for posting

Going off to a war zone my self, I guess that is one of the reasons I wrote this
song originally. But a "your going into a battle ground notice" is a very scary
thing and it can effect you in all time avenues. You can be effected, when you
first leave, right before you get to the battle zone. I guess there are some that
can hardly wait to get their notice and jump right and be a happy camper. But
I wasn't like that. The song was originally intended for a World War 2 soldier
and I was not in that war, but even though they could of been
incredibly patriotic, leaving the love of your life was pretty hard on them.
Especially knowing that their were major war fronts were a lot of soldiers
died.

You made some other comments that were very interesting as well. I value
them!

Thanks

Maybe it's just I find "the notices" a bit too vague ... or a bit too confusing
because of the plural. Maybe just "The call to duty came as such a surprise" if
that's what the notice refers to.

To clarify, I wasn't questioning the emotional validity of this song. The
conception is clear, the musicianship is stellar, and the evocative vocals are
tender and touching. Also, no disrespect here from me - my father served in
WW2, and my mother lost a brother in the Battle of the Bulge. I've added my
endorsement to the bottom of the page.

I have to say I have no culture about folk music.
That said... great idea, the onmoving guitar, the verses
starting with fast rithm and then finding rest.
Maybe every now and then a bit much repetition of lyrics
("waving goodbye", and also the marvelous "on and on", I
would keep it just for the Chorus).

Anyhow, these are details, you definitely accomplished what
you proposed, I was really moved by this song, I'll listen to it
