Description
PBGB is a project based in Pambula Beach NSW. There's a core of 5 players, but we also have a wider "PBGB family" that at last count, was over 15 players. Some of the music we post is just the core, while other posts include players from the wider family. This is an example of the latter. It was kind of like an online collab without being online.

"Big Car - No Shoes" is a song of Neil's, based on some noodling in The Shed around an idea of Pete's. The idea was to keep the words as simple as possible while having a strong impact. We were sitting on a good backing track by Pete and Neil until we had the very good fortune of Jem Savage coming to visit Ken - a regular member. Boy Wonder Jem lifted the whole thing well beyond what we had envisaged with his soprano sax. He also gave our new Fender Rhodes a workout.

Some fine tuning by Ken was greatly appreciated!

We're beginning to grasp the potential of what we have going with the "PBGB Co-operative" - and we like it!

Peter Reid – Concept, Drums
Neil Porter - Writer, Vocals, Guitar, Hammond B3, Bass, Co-Producer and Engineer
Ken Vatcher - Co-Producer and Percussion
Jem Savage - Fabulous solo work on Fhrodo (our beautiful 1971 Fender Rhodes Piano) and Soprano Saxophone.

Recorded at The Shed and mixed/mastered at Jiguma Studio in Pambula Beach, NSW Australia

Lyrics
Big Car – No Shoes
©2012 Neil Porter

Big hat – no cattle
Big sky – but no rain
Nice horse – no saddle
Got a ticket – no plane
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Bad war – losing battle
Big smile – you’re in pain
Big bucks – big hassle
Nice tune – but no fame
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Big car – no shoes
Big car – no shoes

Good minders – bad manners
Fast rail – slow train
Low bar – flame fanners
Big head – no brain
Nice wedding – wrong person
Cool Gibson – no blues
Best schools – no learning
Big car – no shoes

Big car – no shoes
Big car – no shoes

You guys do have some fun, don't you! And the music that comes out of it is exceptional. You get a great drum sound, Neil. Excellent solos. Good structure to the lyrics. All sits beautifully, and the mix is great. The time change is good - gives everything a kick along. I gotta get myself in that shed some day!

Thanks Philip!
This was a step up from what we've been doing, but hopefully indicative of where things are heading in The Shed for 2012. Pete uses a Roland v-drum kit, and it works and sounds really well. Simplest possible way of recording a whole kit (only 2 leads to the interface), and sounds fantastic i the room - totally real sounds. You're most welcome in the Shed if you get up this way.
Cheers,
Neil

YOU had a smile on your face - you should have seen the grin on my face when Jem was playing the soprano sax solo in the double time section! It's so nice when talented friends drop by. Thanks for the listen, glad you enjoyed it!

Big Car No Shoes
This is a great tune and shows your bands diversity of style, congrats on a great song well done
PBGB said 2140 days ago (February 3rd, 2012)
Glad you enjoyed it Neil
We are getting better at diversifying mainly because we are attracting some serious players into The Shed. There's a small (and diminishing) core of players in PBGB, but while the core is shrinking, the wider "PBGB family" is growing in breadth and talent rather nicely. Jem is the first sax player I've worked with who nails it like this.

Fun groove with all the right touches. Such a clean, fat band sound. Cool harmonies on the third verse. Like the double time rave up. A really well put together track, Neil.

Always appreciate you having a listen. Pete gets the brownie points for the change-up on the outro, and Jem for pulling off the soprano sax track of the year!

I'm really pleased to see you enjoyed your listen - Santana kind of sneaked up on us all - we were planning to do the soloing on guitar and then Jem turned up with the sax. Very happy with the outcome.

The Rhodes (nicknamed "Fhrodo") was a donation to The Shed - a fan has entrusted it to us so we needed to make sure it got some time in the sun :) As none of the regulars play keys it was a buzz to have Jem arrive out of the blue and give it a run (along with the soprano sax).
Certainly a lot of fun to have Jem's, Ken's and Pete's skills on my song.
Cheers,
Neil

Wow
Been a while... This is great, super vibes, instrumentals, settings... Then the almost Santana freak-out session to modern jazz (surprise) - you're onto something cool here man. Hammond B3, you use it soooo appropriate. Loved the Rhodes too, oh what a passionate and delicate "solo". This is cat-cool session, wish I could see you LIVE!

We really appreciate your comments - jazz/blues . who'd a thunk it! :) I'm especially appreciative of the comment on the B3 which is very much not my instrument - I just love the sounds it makes.
I wish you could see us live too Mikki, but I can't see it happening for quite a while, if ever.

You guys sound fantastic. I could run down the list but everything is really really fine sounding - lyrics to performances and mix. The touches of the sax (what serendipity) are brilliant against your vocals Neil. You nailed it again!

Peter - we might have to
poach you for lyric writing duties! This was a special for us - easily the best sound and performances from The Shed so far. I just hope we can do it again ;) I haven't mentioned so far in my replies above how much I enjoyed having Ken Vatcher on board for this. While it says "percussion and co-production" in the credits, Ken helped enormously in getting the pared back sound of the final mix and provided the percs in just the right places to give everything a lift. It was great having him involved.
Cheers from "up north",
Neil

Keeping up appearances indeed - glad you enjoyed it. The band here is a compact PBGB - Pete and I are regulars in The Shed, and Ken often comes in for a chat and a play. Jem was up from Melbourne on holidays, staying wit Ken - so it was a collab of sorts, but one where we were all in the same room for at least some of the time. Watching Jem blow the sax parts was a joy :) Very enjoyable indeed.
Cheers from The Shed,
Neil

Maurice!
Really glad you enjoyed it Maurice. I'm becoming more and more enthusiastic about space in music - especially when my songs are involved. As we all do, I had doubts about being able to cur it vocally on this and considered getting a different singer in, but it ended up OK.
Hope you're not getting too much snow over there.
Cheers from a warm but cloudy Pambula Beach morning.

What a great sound! That Branford Marsalis sax, so Sting, so fab! Wo, I totally dig this sound, could be my favorite of your new stuff. (I would've boosted the sax a bit, at least in these Bose headphones.) Very cool lyric idea, too. The terse two word lines are a great format for the sound. Excellent concept very well produced. Totally cool.

Thanks for listening Tobin!
I was hoping you'd get to this. Agree about the sax on a second listen. Mixing the sax was tricky as I had very little experience with real brass instruments. Jem is a gem! He plays most instruments known to man - and all quite well ;) I was looking at getting a guitar solo for this, but Jem happened by and it worked really well. The final mix was aided by Ken Vatcher in the room. Ken has a great ear for what works where, and we ended up with a pretty cool track as a result. Getting the Rhodes on a track was a thrill too - hard to believe that someone liked what we were doing enough to donate it to the Shed. As none of us plays keys live it's sitting in a corner gathering dust most of the time. If ever you're passing Tobin ............. Cheers from Oz,
Neil

This has got WHOMP to it...
One of the great strengths you've developed over the years, Neil, has been an ability to produce mixes that sound very natural and airy but which have impact...I was just listening to other songs on the site, and when I get to this it fairly leaps out of the speakers into my lap...

I like the neo-post-reggae vibe on this, and the subtle interplay between the Rhodes and B3 sorts of sounds. I also really like the lyrics... REALLY like the lyrics...

By the way, my wife heard your tunes on Fran's 'World Music' CD the other day and said she liked your vocals on them....

Cymbal work sounds nice and natural on this, too...
