Lament For a Loved One

Description
Another piece composed a couple of years ago in another attempt to learn something: about melody, arrangement, effects and so on, as well as exploring changes in velocity as suggested by MJer Magnatone. A year or so ago I put this combination (piano, drone and piccolo flute) together and thought it worked rather well, but was a little sombre. A few months ago I played it again and realized it was a lament, so I titled it, found some artwork (by Elvis Wilson), and made a minor change to end on a positive note (or a positive change to end on a major note ;-) I waited until now to present it.

Today, February 2nd, 2012 would have been my younger sister Karen's 60th birthday. Unfortunately, she had a degenerative neuromuscular disease (Huntington's) and chose not to let it progress to the stage where she would have to be physically restrained, needing full-time care, and eventually, dementia. She had a great spirit and an even greater sense of humor: the music she chose for her funeral 14 years ago included Tom Paxton's "Wasn't It a Party?"

This one's for you, Karen, and for anyone else who laments the loss of a loved one.

Some difficult stories recently
I'm so sorry to hear about your sister Richard. Such tragedy in so many lives.

A fine tribute. Sparse but moving.

Cheers

Dick

Lament
the overall atmosphere is the strong point of this song for me. just deep with lots of body. for some reason, it sounded shorter than it's actual length, strange. what are you doing to our brains?

Your "younger" sisters 60th b'day"?...

Laments are present in both the Iliad and the Odyssey
And my friend it is present here. Nichiren said in the 13th Century, :First I should learn about 'death' and then about other things. Your piece here awakens us to the truth of life. I feel your sisters love for you here.

You sure made all parts come together nicely here, the music, the art work and the back story. And also the various elements within the music. A fitting tribute indeed. Very well done.

Thank you and take care,

Lament
This is beautiful music. Quite haunting in places (the flute does that). The mellow tones of the piano and the sparsity of the melody line increase the reflective feel of the piece. A fitting tribute, Richard.

Saddness is it's own reward. I can hear how much you miss your sister. Best of luck with the healing. I try to dwell on the upside of the departed, works better for me, cos I don't do sad too well. I drink too much, and play sad tunes on the piano...

Richard, I'm so sorry to hear about your sister. My wife and I have a friend who has the same condition. This is a lovely tribute you have made.

I think your piece is gorgeous, haunting and respectful. The artwork is a perfect match. Wow. It just finished playing and I had to sit here in silence for a while just absorbing what you presented.

Downloaded with thanks my friend.

Personal,moving and sombre
but also uplifting.......have never been to where you went and so can only imagine what wrought this piece. And yes it seems shorter than it actually is (Sammydix spotted that too).....which means that it works.you have taken us outside ourselves for a spell, and that is true musicianship......

I am not nearly qualified to comment on your sister except to offer my deepest sympathy to you and all that loved her.
Your music reflects a massive spiritual dimension to your talent.
This is mystical and one of the most moving pieces I have ever heard on mj.

Excellent lament
You know, I think that this sort of song is among the toughest of all to do well.   This one, however, is truly excellent.

It is excellent, I think, because it is unhurried and simple, even to the point of being minimalistic.   It puts you in a certain reflectful sonic space, and, by its persistent and unhurried, quiet but confident slowness ... its careful use of drone, simple piano in the lower registers, and a piccolo-like sound in the high register, it keeps you there until the end -- and then, it is gone.   Like our loved ones, it just slips away...
