Lyrics
When Richard Cory came to town
We all had to look at him
A gentleman from sole to crown
Well dressed, elegant, and slim

He had it all
That's what we thought
But we were wrong

He had more money than a king
He was well-schooled in every grace
We all thought he was everything
We wished that we were in his place

He had it all
That's what we thought
But we were wrong

He had his wealth
The picture of perfect health
He lived alone
A house that was never a home

Something inside
That long ago died
A secret he hid
He could not forgive

We all worked from day to night
So we could have our daily bread
Then one calm summer night
He put a bullet through his head

He had it all
That's what we thought
But we were wrong

Fine songwriting. Dark, melodic, and moody! Love the guitar tones and playing. Nice bridge. A bright contrast to the verses and chorus. Excellent production and mix.

I like the way you've added to the original poem to make it more of a song, although the main point remains. Nice guitar tones and lines in support and in the solo. The fairly sparse arrangement is all it needs - very powerful. Excellent work!

Yes
It is a fairly sparse arrangement. No keyboards or software instruments were harmed in the making of this song. I wanted to try just guitars, bass and vocals (along with drums on demand). Thanks for listening and commenting.

I thought
this might be a cover of the Simon and Garfunkel tune (was it S&G?) but this is quite an original and very tuneful, interesting interpretation of the poem. The guitar work is great, both picking and strumming. The vocal is beautiful. Thank you for the download.

I googled
the title when I was just about finished with the song to see if anyone else had used the poem. Sure enough, Simon and Garfunkel did. Thanks for the comment. Regarding the guitar work - I am so thankful for being able to do multiple takes in Garageband. It doesn't come as easily for me as I would like.

first line
has me listening. epic guitar line. a little ELP. do so like the guitar work and harmony vocals. sparse drums in just the right place. wondering if the change is a bit drastic and could be accomplished with a different arrangement. here come the Michael olfield guitars. nice, very nice. you have a great sense of space.

I was
wondering if the change at "He had his wealth . . ." was too much. I just knew it needed some variation. Thanks for commenting.

Impressive song writing
Nice picked guitar opening. Like the chord progression. Also like the effected vocals and the low key backing. Impressive song writing. One of your best, definitely. Thanks for the D/L. Take care, Peter.

dark and dreamy
I think my favorite part of this song is the way you've done the vocals. The slightly off-kilter layers, the bit of echoey reverb and the occasional harmonies. very cool and perfectly done. great work on the guitar. this is great.
