Description:
This is a remix. Please take the time to listen to the original (which just happened to be called Sight Words In C) and tell me which one you prefer.

I am developing a phonics DVD for children and this is one of the songs on the DVD.

I want to know if it sounds "fun" and "lively" for kids (and any comments for improvement and/or praise).

Thank you for listening

This is the better of the 2 &mdash 02/15/05 - 02:07:23 AM
Drums are too loud in the other version. It's a sweet tune.
I could have done with more of the counterpoint tune
before the drums came in just to get it fixed in my mind
before you started playing with it - but it's probably that
way because of the DVD you're making.

Thank you for the comments. I needed to keep the piece to 2 minutes
and have a "strong" rhythm base at the 18 second mark, so I was a bit
confined to what I could do.But I might work with it and put out a
"Composer's Cut" :)---

Not sure I liked the Bongos &mdash 02/15/05 - 07:28:10 PM
But this is definitely "kid" friendly. Maybe something to
make the kiddies "laugh" in place of the bongos? The
ending is gonna make them "A Scared"! Or maybe not. All
in all a very happy piece, though.

Thank you.

I guess it's hard to see what's planned with just the music. The bongos are a
segue to change the words on the screen.
Colorful and active.

The images planned for the ending is having the words float away into the
'light'.

Never thought it was 'scary' (problem with having the images in your head
when you compose)... I'll have to listen again with that in mind.

Thanks again for your comments.---

good possibilities &mdash 02/18/05 - 10:44:10 AM
I like the tune very much, it's catchy and cute --
something kids can easily relate to.

I haven't heard your other version yet. Will do next.

Perhaps the use of some different sounds would make this
tune more distinctive, more whimsical and funny.
Something with exaggerated effects, highs, lows.....maybe
a "wahh-wahh". You know, something to spice up the mix.
The synth sound you've chosen is respectable, but lacks
distinction or "fun" color.

Some extra percussion effects, maybe a whistle coming in
suddenly, a rachet....something unexpected!

In any case, the melodic material is really good here. You
just need to liven it up with different sounds and extra
effects, which kids love.

Thanks for the comments.I like the ideas about the different effects. I, of
course, have to run everything passed the experts... my kids ;-)---

DVD expectations &mdash 02/18/05 - 11:17:59 AM
If you are developing this music for a DVD, which means it
will play from a TV perhaps, I think you should use a wider
range of EQ, more lows and more depth in the sound. This
would work for a computer CD-ROM. The expectations for
a DVD may be higher. Also, the rather thin drum loop is
not necessary and may detract from the overall musicality
of what you have composed. Consider instead using
various instruments playing this light classical melody,
creating themes and variations.
