Never Good Enough for You

Description
Here's my latest in a quick mix without any volume fades or other such goodies. The artwork is an original painting of my wife Kathy by Dave Ottinger of St. Louis, MO.

Anyway, it's a song about a guy who thinks he's making an effort with his girlfriend, but always seems to fall short.

Let me know what you think about it and provide any suggestions. Thanks for listening.

Lyrics
I took you out on Thursday to a TGIF
But that just wasn't good enough for you.
I wore my red bandana and my leather Harley vest,
But that just wasn't good enough for you.

I don't take your money to pay my bills
I even keep my hands off your prescription pills.
I'm not quite sure what else I can do
But it never seems good enough for you.

I pick up my clothes at least once a week,
But that just isn't good enough for you.
When you're in the shower
I rarely take a peek.
But that just isn't good enough for you.

I took you out driving on a Saturday night
I put my tongue in your mouth
You say it's not right.
I'm not quite sure what else that I can do
But that just isn't good enough for you.

(Lead)

On your last birthtday
I bought you lingerie
But that just wasn't good enough for you.
You had the nerve to ask me
How much I paid.
'Cause it's just never good enough for you.

I told you I bought it
At Fred's of Hollywood.
You threw it in the trash and said,
"Now it looks good."
I'm not quite sure what else I can do
But it never seems good enough for you.
Never seems good enough,
Never seems good enough,
Never seems good enough for you.

Enough for You
They never appreciate the little things we do. I feel your pain. Fun rocker! I love the bass line and tone. Way cool guitars!

Funkiness
I really dig the chord progression. The guitar work is great, no complaints all around from me

Enjoyed
I think you've got a hit on your hands here! Very cool indeed.

I had to listen in my ear buds but they are generally pretty good. To me the song seems to lack low-end a bit.

Low End
What would you suggest to add low end?

Groovy!
Lovely guitar work and vocals.

A sort of manic Black Magic Woman.

Cheers

Thanks
Thanks to all who listened and commented so far. I just bought a new set of Mackie monitors and it seemed to make a world of difference in helping me with the guitar tones. I also have to say that the G&L ASAT came through with flying colors.

Sorry...
It just isn't good enough for me... it needs more cowbell. :P

Has somewhat of a *Romantics* feel to it... very cool.

Parts of the *good enough for you* refrains seem to be a bit of a stretch on your vocal range. What you might want to try is a spoken overlay track, just speaking those words in a snarky, *neh-neh neh-neh neh neh* taunting, or sarcastic manner, in your normal speaking range. That might help it work better. ;)

Thanks J. A.
I stayed it the original key of B minor because the guitars sounded better. The vocal does stretch at times so that was the downside.

And you can always use "more cowbell."

Screamin' and Such
These are screams of comical frustration. I may redo them, but I kind of like the overall feel.

I did want to get an upfront sound on this one. I've been listening to Little Steven's Garageband station on Sirius radio, so I guess that's part of the influence.

Little Stevens
Oh man I 'm always sneaking my bosses Sirius to little Stevies show, hes always keeping it on classic 70's I like it but thers only so much I can take. Great show Little Stevie has lot of real roots oriented rock and roll was hooked the moment I found it, and if thats an influence then its a great thing! :)

i knew i would love this...
...from the first strum in the intro. the vibe and energy was there right away, you have a sense of humor in your music yet it is masterfully done. love the danceable energy and gleeful abandon in this song.

Howl!
I dig the Elvis Costello vibe. I also dig your wife's portrait. Way cool!

That howl leading into the instrumental break was my favorite moment. I kind of wanted howls and cackles to make up the whole instrumental break. Seriously. How unique would that be? And more howls at the end.

Balanced writing, good sticking to a main theme, etc. But howl more!

Howl!!!
Thanks Tobin. I did the screams for comic effect. I'm afraid they'd lose their effect if there were too many. Anyway, I'm glad you appreciated the howls because they were put in for fun.

Thanks for the nice comments. Always good to hear from you.

Great track
This is so well written and structured with a vocal performance which equals and is full of conviction. Great hookline and tailor made for the four piece rock'n'roll format. I'm super impressed by the writing, but as you know that's always the first thing I look at. Ten all the way from me.

Good song; the rest can wait
To my way of thinking, if the song is a good one (as this is ...), if it connects with people (either male or female) whose heads are bobbin’ thanks to a catchy tune and sympathy ... then the rest of the production values can wait, possibly forever.

The oft-mentioned cowbells, and a few other tricks that pop up throughout the track, are hooks.   Sure, they are.   And that’s what people remember.   Scenes like taking something and throwing it in the trash and saying, “Now it looks good,” are great little two-line vignettes that stick in your head.

If the song is good, mixing will improve it. If it isn't, then nothing can.

Agreed
Good comments Mike. I don't think there is a lot to be changed from my perspective. It turned out as well as I could expect. Now, I'm sure some whiz bang could improve it, but I pretty much like the overall feel and sound of it.

Thanks for your comments.

Really,
a lot of swag. You've got a distinctive voice. Believe it not, I was reminded of Al Jolson but I'm not sure why. Thanks.

That Jolson could sing on one knee. I assure you, this was not recorded in blackface.

more than the cowbell
Though I'm loving the copwbell, I'm loving the tune. Good lyrics and a good hook. An Anthem of sorts, to all the frustrated men out there, trying to figure out what's gonna make their woman happy.
