Description
This started off with a quote Peter had at the bottom of his emails for a while: "All things are not shining, and all the shining things are."
We’ve known each other since we started primary school together many years ago and have worked in a few bands together over the years. So when I was around at his place one day we started thinking it would be a good idea if we wrote some more songs together. I thought the quote above was a good place to start. There it sat for a while, until inspiration struck and Peter came up with a set of words. I put some chords to them and recorded the first (of several) vocal tracks.
It has taken a while to get it to where we’re both happy with the mix, but here it is! We hope you enjoy it.
Peter Thorneycroft: lyrics (and a few suggestions re the music), harmony vocals, harmonica and synthesiser.
Philip Gardner: music (and a few suggestions re the words), lead vocal, guitars and bass.

Lyrics
Shiny Things
Words & Music by Peter Thorneycroft & Philip Gardner
When you look into a garden, you see flowers or the weeds
What it is that you perceive, depends upon your needs
If you want the seed to grow, then plant it in the ground
Nurture it with love and watch the bud that comes around
And when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land
Look behind a dark cloud, there’s an open sky of blue
The hail and rain starts falling, then it clears the way for you
The night becomes the morning, again the sun will rise
Rainbow warmth above you, you can ease your worried mind
So when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land
Instrumental (verse x 2)
The mighty river ebbs and flows, and soft conquers the hard
The path of least resistance, will leave the rocks with scars
When you look at your reflection, there are diamonds deep within
Just go beneath the surface, and you’ll find where to begin
Walkin’ the tightrope, walkin’ the talk, walkin the plank or walkin’ on air
We make our path by walkin’, and the winning walk is here
So when life offers chances
Take them with both hands
Reach out for the shiny things
That are scattered through the land
Yeah when you see the chances
As you travel through the land
Reach out for the shiny things
And take them with both hands
